~ Truman-Lodge cursing Franz Sanchez. |
Truman-Lodge (first name given as William in the novelization) is a supporting antagonist in the 1989 James Bond film Licence To Kill. He is a corrupt stockbroker who helps drug lord Franz Sanchez launder his drug money.
He is portrayed by Anthony Starke.
Overview[]
Truman-Lodge is a corrupt stockbroker and "financial whiz kid" known for using accounting tricks to illegally maximize profits; the novelization of the film explains that he fled the United States for the Republic of Isthmus, a banana republic in Latin America, because he was wanted by the police for insider trading.
He works for drug kingpin Franz Sanchez, laundering the money he makes from selling cocaine by buying up real estate and using his accounting prowess to help him avoid paying taxes.
In Licence To Kill[]
Truman-Lodge is first seen at Sanchez's casino in Isthmus City, hosting a meeting of his boss' fellow gangsters and persuading them to invest in the drug operation. Along with Sanchez, he promises them huge returns on their $100 million investment, and entices them with prostitutes.
Later, Truman-Lodge takes Sanchez's investors on a tour of the facility used to convert cocaine into gasoline, the heart of Sanchez's new venture. Unbeknownst to Truman-Lodge, one of the guests, an assassin purportedly working for Sanchez, is really British secret agent James Bond, who is planning to kill Sanchez as revenge for having his friend Felix Leiter maimed and murdering Leiter's wife. Sanchez finds out Bond's true identity and tries to kill him with a cocaine grinder, but Bond buys time by insinuating that Truman-Lodge is going to double-cross him and take his money, just as another of his minions, Milton Krest, had done before Sanchez killed him. Bond uses the distraction to escape,
When Bond destroys the facility, Truman-Lodge protests as Sanchez allows the investors to flee, lamenting that they will lose millions unless they close the deal. Sanchez ignores him, however, and orders him to help him pursue Bond, who has taken off in a tanker truck filled with $80 million in liquefied cocaine.
Truman-Lodge rides with Sanchez in the latter's car, shooting at Bond as the secret agent drives away with their investment. Ultimately, Bond destroys the tanker and, with it, the cocaine. Horrified, Truman curses Sanchez for allowing their product to be destroyed, sarcastically calling it an "$80 million write-off." Angered by his minion's disrespect and remembering Bond's warning, Sanchez quips that it is "time to cut overhead" before shooting Truman-Lodge dead with an Uzi.
