“ | You must be clueless. The Waxing Moon is nothing more than a source of magical energy. No granter of wishes. Created with our singular resolve, it only grants wishes to us who created it. How ridiculous they look. As the rightful owner of the Waxing Moon, it falls to me to mete out punishment. Like...this! | „ |
~ Tsuchimikado Yasuhiro explaining the true nature of the Waxing Moon before planning to kill Iori, Saber, and Rogue Saber with the Rogue Servant. |
“ | I-I cannot fall to some low-born ruffian...Rider...RIDER! Make haste! Help me! | „ |
~ Tsuchimikado Yasuhiro's last words before dying at the hands of Chiemon and Lancer in the Rat Route |
Tsuchimikado Yasuhiro is the overarching antagonist of Fate/Samurai Remnant. He's the headliner of the Yasuhiro lineage who created a minor and incomplete version of the Holy Grail known as the Waxing Moon, thus creating the Waxing Moon Ritual, whom he served as both its overseer and the Master of Caster. While he promised to deliver the completed vessel to the shogunate, he actually planned to use it to restore the power of his family and take control of Edo again.
He is voiced by Satoshi Mikami who also voiced Revolver Ocelot in Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain.
Appereance[]
Tsuchimikado is a tall man with greenish skin, dark green hair collected in a topknot, and eyes of the same color. He wears an Omnyouji vest with a headliner which has a veil that covers his face most of the time and pointed shoes.
Personality[]
Tsuchimikado is an imposing figure who puts his ambitions over anything. He shows him off as a composed and confident figure who doesn't falter easily even if the tides aren't in his favor, as it's shown after he gets injured by Rogue Saber's sword. The only occasion where he showed off true panic was in his dying moments. While he shows off to be altruistic and willing to help with other people's wishes, he's actually a manipulative person who tries to use the shogunate and some of the Masters involved in the war to obtain his goals. He also seems to show a despise over people of lower classes, as he mocks the other participants of the ritual and calls Chiemon a "low-born ruffian". Despite all these traits, he genuinely seems concerned about his family's future and his brother, as he tells him that even if he wasn't a proper mage, he could have brought on the family in other ways.
Biography[]
Backstory[]
Yasuhiro was the headliner of the Tsuchimikado family and the descendant of Abe-No-Seimei. Willing to restore the power of his lineage and take control over Edo again, Tsuchimikado read the records of his ancestor, who learned of a holy item known as the "Holy Grail", which could have granted wishes. By using those records, Tsuchimikado was able to create a replica of the grail, which he called the Waxing Moon. Even though, this turned out to be weaker and incomplete compared to the Holy Grail. Despite this, Tsuchimikado then contacted the shogunate and asked their permission to create the Waxing Moon Ritual, promising to hand the Waxing Moon to them at the end of the conflict. He was able to obtain the consent and as such, he could start the ritual as his overseer. Despite this, he became a Master of the conflict by summoning Caster. He then took two of the Masters under his wing. One is Yui Shosetsu, and the other is Takao Dayu, who asks for his help to aid the people of the slums. He also used Caster's powers to summon the Rogue Servants, heroic spirits who don't have Masters, to make the Waxing Moon stronger. During this time, he also spurred his younger brother to find a way he was good at to carry on the family.
The Waxing Moon Ritual[]
At the beginning of the ritual, he remains in his lair and observes the various battles, including those of Miyamoto Iori and Yui Shosetsu, noticing how she ended up sparing the other samurai, while he sends some of his men (including his brother) to control the ritual and check on the various participants. At a certain point, he decides to use a powerful spell to mind control all of the Servants in the ritual, so that he can win easier, with the aid of Caster. Ultimately, he ends up controlling Assassin, Rogue Lancer, Rogue Archer, Rogue Rider, Rogue Berserker, and Rogue Assassin, who start to act wild and attack the other Servants and participants (Rogue Ruler, Rogue Caster, Rogue Saber, Lancer, and Berserker resist his spell, Saber is saved by Iori, Archer goes wild but kills himself before falling to the hands of Tsuchimikado, and Rider only pretends to be at his control). After discovering the truth, Miyamoto Iori and his allies decide to invade Tsuchimikado's lair. As a response, he sends several controlled Servants, including Rogue Berserker, who ends up getting killed, and Assassin, who forces Iori to choose to either go against Tsuchimikado or chase him.
In the Rat Route, Iori decides to go against Tsuchimikado either way and reaches him in his lair, assisted by Rogue Saber. As they reach him, Tsuchimikado uses the spell on Rogue Saber, who partially ends up getting controlled, but thanks to Saber, he manages to get free of his grasp and actually stabs him through a strategy with the other Saber. Despite getting injured, Tsumichikado doesn't falter and proclaims that he will still be the winner. He then sends more controlled Servants to deal with Iori, Saber, and Rogue Saber. But to his surprise and horror, they are knocked out by Chiemon and Lancer's sudden arrival. Lancer then proceeds to stab him and make him defenseless. As he tries to crawl out by them, Tsuchimikado tries to call out Rider, to no avail. Chiemon then proceeds to finish Tsuchimikado off, and the Servant stabs him in the chest one last time, killing him on the spot, and ending his control on the Waxing Moon Ritual.
In the Snake Route, he meets the same end, but off-screen, as Iori chases down Assassin.
After his death, his younger brother, Tsuchimikado Takoshi, takes his place as the overseer of the ritual, promising to not interfere or cause any problems, while the Waxing Moon ends up in the hands of Yui Shosetsu and then to others depending on the route.
Fate/Grand Order[]
Tsuchimikado makes also an appearance as a supporting antagonist in the Fate/Grand Order event Codex on Waxing Moon Swordsmanship, where he is summoned as a giant ghost by Chiemon through a spell learned by Mori Souiken. He sends shadow Servants of the Rogue Servants, but in the end, he is ultimately defeated by Saber's Noble Phantasm. He ultimately accepts his fate and entrusts the future of the family to his brother Takatoshi.
Power and Abilities[]
As the overseer of the Waxing Moon Ritual, Tsuchimikado is shown to possess great magical energy, being able to create a replica of the Holy Grail (even if incomplete) and summon several Servants and monsters in all of Edo with the aid of Caster. He's also shown to have a high skill in mind spells, as he's able to control a good portion of the Servants in the ritual and put them under his control. He's disposed of great charisma, as he was able to put Yui Shosetsu, Takao Dayu, and all of the shogunate on his side.
Trivia[]
- Tsuchimikado is the only Master in the game, alongside Takao Dayu, who doesn't actively fight in the game, neither as an ally nor as an enemy. But while Dayu isn't proficient in magecraft, Tsuchimikado is a powerful mage but prefers to make the Servants do his job.
- Tsuchimikado was designed to look similar to Kirei Kotomine. This is shown in his artwork, with his spread arms pose.
