~ Tsuneo Iwami |
Tsuneo Iwami is a major antagonist of the the Like a Dragon (Ryū ga Gotoku, formerly known as Yakuza in the west) franchise. He served as the main antagonist and final boss of Yakuza 6: The Song of Life.
Iwami is the CEO of Iwami Shipbuilding and son of the original founder, Heizo Iwami. Despite this, he thirsts for more power and will cross any lengths to achieve it, no matter how amoral it is. He's also one of the arch-enemies of Kazuma Kiryu, and is by far, his most hated enemy yet.
He is voiced by and modeled after Nao Oomori, who also played Ichi in Ichi the Killer.
Appearance[]
Iwami has parted hair and a wrinkled face and appears to be of normal build, but secretly has an incredibly muscular body. He has a tattoo of Bai Ze, the eater of dreams, on his back. This refers to the fact that Iwami devours the dreams of those who're around him.
Personality[]
Despite having a front as a typical soft-spoken businessman, Iwami's true personality is as vile as they come. He's truly an entitled brat who believes he deserves everything in the world, and throws violent fits when he doesn't get his way. No lives matter to him except his own. He is so self-righteous that he will betray anyone he considers his ally for his own gain. On top of everything, Iwami is a massive coward, constantly terrified of a fair fight.
Biography[]
In 1976, a young Iwami was told the Secret of Onomichi by a man named Matsunaga. The man was being hunted by officers of the Yomei Alliance, an Onomichi-based yakuza group. Matsunaga begged the young man to ask his father for mercy, but he refused, resulting in Matsunaga's murder. Iwami pretended to not know the secret around his father in hopes of joining the Yomei, but his father instead sent him on the path of a legitimate businessman, resulting in Iwami garnering a deep hatred of his father.
His chance at life in the yakuza would not come until 2015, where alongside Katsumi Sugai of the Tojo Clan, he staged a mass arson of Little Asia, a subsection of Kamurocho, in hopes of igniting a war between the Tojo Clan and the Saio Triad. It works, even resulting in the top figures of the Tojo Clan to be arrested. Sugai takes his seat as the new chairman of the Tojo Clan. Around this time, a new figure would enter the fray that would throw a wrench into Iwami's entire scheme: Kazuma Kiryu.
As Kiryu inches closer to discovering that Iwami is behind everything, Iwami takes some time to confront his father in his home. He tells him that he had known about the Secret of Onomichi for quite some time, and then orders Kanji Koshimizu, patriarch of the Koshimizu Family, to kill Heizo. Left with only Kiryu and company to stand in his way, he orders Takumi Someya, patriarch of the Someya Family and ally of Kiryu, to kill his friend in exchange for the life of his ex-wife.
Kiryu storms the Milennium Tower in hopes of confronting Iwami, but instead must clash with Someya. When Someya fails to kill him, Iwami then changes the rule: Kiryu must now kill Someya before Iwami finishes counting. He reaches zero, but Someya stabs himself at the last second in a vain hope of saving Kiyomi. Iwami and Sugai leave, but Koshimizu shoots Kiyomi anyway, as Iwami had finished counting. Someya screams in horror and anguish and dies of blood loss, leaving Kiryu enraged.
Kiryu and his friend Tsuyoshi Nagumo storm Heizo's funeral the following day to stop Iwami. Koshimizu fights them first, and the duo make quick work of him. Before they can confront Iwami, he and Sugai reveal that they have taken Haruka Sawamura and Haruto, Kiryu's adopted daughter and grandson, hostage, and that they will kill them both if they take another step. The two brutally beat Nagumo and Kiryu to near death, as they know this is the only way they could possibly win. But before they can kill the heroes, the Hirose Family saves the day and frees Haruka and Haruto from their captors. They beg Kiryu to get up, and he slowly, but surely, struggles to his feet. Beaten, bloodied, bruised, and furious, Kiryu takes a step forward. Sugai attempts to strike Kiryu, but he punches him so hard that he sends him flying. Kiryu then makes eye contact with Iwami and insults him, calling him "Little Baby Iwami". Iwami then engages Kiryu in one final battle. Iwami may be a powerful man, but he's nothing but a speck of dust to Kiryu, who demolishes him. Iwami is reduced to a sniveling wreck and begs Kiryu to spare him. Kiryu ignores him and attempts to murder him, but knocks him unconscious instead to save his friends from Sugai.
Iwami is arrested and taken to prison, his dreams now fully destroyed.
Trivia[]
- Iwami is the final opponent that Kazuma Kiryu faces in the Yakuza Saga. However, if one counts Like a Dragon: Gaiden to also be the "true" end of Kiryu's saga, then it is instead Kosei Shishido who's Kiryu's final opponent. If one counts the Like a Dragon Saga as well, then Masataka Ebina is the final opponent Kiryu faces.
- He is fluent in Chinese.
- Because of his resemblance to Chinese actor Gao Yalin, he is often referred to by Chinese players as Xia Donghai, the name of Gao's character in the Chinese family sitcom Home with Kids.
