“ | Like us Valkyries… there were once 13 Olympian Gods. | „ |
~ Brunhilde explains to Göll that there were 13 Gods of Olympus before Poseidon erased Adamas from history. |
The Twelve Gods of Olympus (in Japanese: オリュンポス十二神, Oryunposu Jūnishin), formerly known as the Thirteen Gods of Olympus, are major antagonists in the manga/anime series Record of Ragnarok and in its manga spin-off Record of Ragnarok Forbidden Legend - Apocalypse of The Gods.
They are the most important Greek Gods, who managed to win both the Titanomachy Tournament and the Gigantomachy becoming the rulers of the Universe and thus governing the three kingdoms of which the cosmos is composed. Precisely for this reason, they are the most influential Gods of the Gods' Council. Nearly a third of the Gods Fighters are Gods of Olympus.
Overview[]
The Twelve Gods of Olympus are the twelve main Gods of the Greek Pantheon, as well as the most influential and powerful members of their Mythology. The Twelve Gods of Olympus possess some of the most powerful Gods that can be found in Valhalla such as Zeus, Hades, Poseidon and Apollo, and because of this their influence and reputation extend far beyond their Pantheon, to the point that even minor Gods among the Gods of Olympus such as Aphrodite have great influence over the other Gods. Among them there is also one of the best blacksmiths and engineers among the Gods, namely Hephaestus.
Plot[]
The Twelve Gods of Olympus are born when, at the end of the Titanomachy Tournament, Zeus manages to defeat and kill his father Kronos, thus becoming the new ruler of the Greek Gods, the ruler of Olympus, the King of the Universe and the Chairman of the Gods' Council.
This fact is not appreciated by the Primordial Goddess Gaia, who thus unleashes the Giants against the Greek Gods, starting the Gigantomachy. Zeus, Hades, Poseidon, Adamas, Hermes, Ares and Apollo participate in the war and, in the end, manage to win it with Zeus defeating the Giants in Valhalla and Hades defeating the Titans servants of Kronos who had freed themselves from Tartarus and wanted to take advantage of the war to destroy the Greek Gods.
From that moment the Gods of Olympus take power in the Universe and, in addition to Zeus, Hades also becomes the King of Helheim and Poseidon the King of the Seas.
Beelzebub, eager to die, goes to Helheim to face Hades and push him to kill him, but after knowing why Beelzebub wants to die, he tries to convince him that Lilith, the Goddess who has cast a spell on him to allow him to live, blessed and not cursed him and to reconsider his priorities: this leads Beelzebub to decide to live a miserable and despicable life in order to die in the most horrendous way possible.
However Adamas, disliking that Zeus rules as his younger brother, initiates a coup by freeing the enemies of the Greek Gods such as the Giants, Titans and Typhon, convincing 49 members of the Gods' Council to side with him and, with the help of Hermes undercover on behalf of Zeus, also some elements of the Gods of Olympus. However, when he goes to ask Poseidon for help, the latter accuses him of having broken every rule that defines a perfect God and mortally wounds him, forcing the Gods to erase him from history: from that moment the Thirteen Gods of Olympus become the Twelve Gods of Olympus. Adamas, however, is recovered by Hermes and, at the request of Hades, taken by Beelzebub who transforms him into a Cyborg. During the operation, Adamas criticizes Beelzebub's desire to create something that can kill him, which leads an annoyed Beelzebub to give him a flashy Cyborg body during the operation, however Adamas ends up liking it: from that moment, Adamas begins to live in Helheim with the name chosen by Hades Adamantine. When Hermes, at Beelzebub's request, goes to warn Poseidon that Adamas is still alive and asks him if he still intends to kill him, Poseidon explains that he will not do it because, if Adamas died, Hades would be upset.
After Python is expelled from Valhalla due to his ugly appearance, he begins to let off steam by terrorizing the inhabitants of Delphi, which is why Ares sends his army to stop him, although Python manages to defeat them all. At that point, to exceed Ares' expectations, Apollo goes to stop Python and defeats him with a single punch, however the latter refuses to lose and for this reason, in the following days, he continues to challenge Apollo, always losing due to a fist. When Apollo understands why Python behaves like this, he manages to calm him down by explaining that he is like him and that he must learn to love himself before others, and takes leave of him, promising to challenge himself again in the future. Thus Python, together with the local Humans, created the Temple of Delphi in honor of Apollo leaving us the inscription "Know Thyself".
In 2000 B.C. a Gods' Council takes place during which it is decided to spare Humanity, the dominant species on Earth, but to inflict punishment on them anyway by destroying Thebes for its arrogance, and Ares sets out to destroy it personally as it is his area of expertise. However, Ares meets the resistance of Alcides who, after drinking Ambrosia, routs his army and faces him face to face. Their clash is interrupted by Zeus, who makes a pact with Alcides: the latter would become a God renaming himself Heracles in honor of Zeus' wife, Hera, and in exchange the Gods would have not interfered more with Human affairs.
As patron God of Sparta, Apollo gives the order to the Spartans never to fight during the Carneia Festival, a celebration that takes place once a year and organized in his honor: this order almost leads to the destruction of Greece due to the stubbornness of the Gerousia of not wanting to fight the army of Xerxes during the Carneia Festival, but in the end Leonidas rebels and with 300 Spartans fights the Persians, an action that will lead a year later to the victory of Greece over Persia.
At one point, Hephaestus helps the Humans Yasutsuna Hoki, Munechika Sanjo and Kunitsuna Awataguchi, and the Goddess Kanayagokami to forge the katana Onikiri Ame-no-Murakumo, which becomes the Divine Weapon of Susano'o no Mikoto, from the sword Ame-no-Murakumo no Tsurugi.
During the XXI Century Gods' Council, the Gods gather again to vote for the extermination or salvation of Humanity and Aphrodite immediately sides with the extermination together with Shiva, which pushes everyone to vote for the end of Humanity. However, Brunhilde convinces the Gods to grant Humans a chance to save themselves through Ragnarok, and thus the start of the Ragnarok Tournament is proclaimed. Some Gods of Olympus are inserted by Zeus into the Gods Fighters, the representatives of the Gods during the competition: Poseidon and Apollo.
During another meeting of the Gods' Council, Zeus shows the Gods his twelve choices to represent the Gods in the Gods Fighters during the Ragnarok Tournament, but many Gods complain that their name is not on the list. When Sun Wukong points out that a name is missing from the list, Zeus announces the Apocalypse Tournament, a competition between 16 Gods whose winner would take the last place in the Gods Fighters. At the end of the meeting Zeus, Hermes and Ares are joined by Ra-Horakhty, enraged by what happened, who knocks Ares down and prepares to face Zeus. The two are interrupted by Cú Chulainn, who demands the throne of Zeus if he wins the Apocalypse Tournament. So Zeus pits Cú Chulainn and Ra against each other in the first match of the Round of 16 and determines that the winner of the Apocalypse Tournament will also have the opportunity to institute a new law in the Constitution of Valhalla.
At that point, Zeus, Hermes and Ares watch all the matches of the Apocalypse Tournament from the stands of honor. In the end, it is Zeus himself who takes the last place in the Gods Fighters.
Some time later, at the beginning of the Ragnarok Tournament, to watch the competition, in addition to the three participating Olympians, there are also Hermes, Ares and Aphrodite. After the First Round it is Shiva's turn to fight on representing Gods against Adam, representing Humans. However Zeus, who had to fight in the last Round, intervenes and forces Shiva to give him his place, so Hermes introduces the God with a melody and Zeus faces Adam, managing to defeat and kill him with great effort. In the Third Round subsequently fights Poseidon representing the Gods: he faces Kojiro Sasaki representing the Humans, but ends up underestimating the opponent and for this he is defeated and killed by the opponent.
Poseidon's defeat is not at all appreciated by Zeus, Hermes and Ares, although the leader of the Greek Gods admits that Kojiro was stronger than Poseidon and that Humans are strong, and for this reason they once again anticipate Shiva and send into the field in the Fourth Round Heracles representing the Gods, hoping to avenge Poseidon. In the end however, Heracles too is defeated and killed by his adversary representative of the Humans, Jack the Ripper.
During the Sixth Round Hades, having learned of Poseidon's defeat, reaches Valhalla and then decides to replace Buddha (who betrayed the Gods and fought on behalf of the Humans in the Sixth Round) in the Gods Fighters (just before Ares can do it at Hermes' suggestion) and to fight in the Seventh Round representing the Gods to avenge his brother: his opponent is Qin Shi Huang representing Humans, who finally manages to defeat and kill Hades. Adamas, angry about this, seeks revenge against Brunhilde and Qin Shi Huang, but is stopped by Beelzebub who takes the field in the Eighth Round representing the Gods to avenge Hades: he faces Nikola Tesla representing the Humans and manages to defeat and kill him.
In the Ninth Round, Zeus decides to have Apollo fight, the last God of Olympus to be missing, representing the Gods: initially Apollo is uninterested in Ragnarok, but accepts after learning of the deaths of Poseidon, Heracles and Hades. His opponent is Leonidas, representing the Humans, who hates him deeply because he holds him unjustly responsible for the almost conquest of Greece by the Persians because of the Carneia Festival. In the end Apollo manages to defeat and kill his opponent, who ends up forgiving him during the fight, even if he decides not to treat the wound he suffered on his face during the fight, proving that he fought with all of himself. Apollo then, tired and injured, is taken to the infirmary by Python.
Following this, Zeus organizes a meeting between all the remaining Gods Fighters (also attended by Hermes and Ares) in which it is decided to quickly obtain the two victories that the Gods lack to win Ragnarok Tournament. During the Tenth Round, Adamas intervenes in the dispute between Beelzebub, Buddha and Odin by preventing Beelzebub from attacking Odin so as not to dishonor Hades with his actions.
Powers and Abilities[]
Divine Physiology, Strength and Stamina: Being all Gods the Olympians, they all possess Divine characteristics that allow them to never age and not being able to die of old age or at the hands of deadly weapons. However, they can be injured and killed by physical attacks with superhuman strength or by Divine Weapons. They also possess abilities superior to those of ordinary Humans, such as attack, defense and speed much higher than normal.
Divine Weapons: Most of the Gods of Olympus use Divine Weapons in battle. They are similar to normal Human weapons, however they possess very high power and are indestructible unless hit by Divine Powers or other Divine Weapons. All have different abilities, but all amplify the powers of the Gods who wield them and are very powerful weapons.
Miscellaneous Abilities: Some of them are also able to use other unusual abilities, such as manipulating time to their liking, controlling water in all its forms, manipulate matter at will, exploit blood to be able to enhance one's Divine Weapon and harness the light to power their Divine Weapon and create various weapons. One of them, Hephaestus, is also an excellent blacksmith and engineer, among the best among both Gods and Humans.

Trivia[]
- In ancient Greek Religion and Mythology, the Twelve Gods of Olympus are the principal Gods of the Greek Pantheon and are commonly composed of Zeus, Hera, Poseidon, Demeter, Athena, Apollo, Artemis, Ares, Hephaestus, Aphrodite, Hermes and one of Hestia or Dionysus. They were called Gods of Olympus because, according to tradition, they resided on Mount Olympus.
- Although Hades was an important God of ancient Greece and was the brother of the first generation of the Olympians along with Zeus, Poseidon, Hera, Demeter and Hestia, his realm was the Underworld, far from Olympus, and for this he was not considered one of the Gods of Olympus in the Greek Religion. In the Record of Ragnarok series, however, Hades is a full-fledged member of the Gods of Olympus.
- Besides the Twelve Gods of Olympus, both the Greek Religion and the Record of Ragnarok series contain many other Greek Gods.
- In the series Record of Ragnarok the Twelve Gods of Olympus are different from the Greek Mythology, in fact so far only ten of the twelve Gods of Olympus present in the series have been confirmed so far: Zeus, Hades, Poseidon, Hera, Apollo, Hermes, Ares, Aphrodite, Hephaestus and Artemis.
- In the Record of Ragnarok series, the Twelve Gods of Olympus include an additional and original former member, named Adamas. The latter is an original character with no existing equivalent in the Greek Mythology.
