Synopsis

The story of Harvey Dent, also known as Two-Face and formerly the Rat King, from the Batman: Arkham franchise.

Past[]

Harvey Dent grew up in a very violent and abusive household with a drunkard and abusive father, Christopher Dent, who often beat him and his mother. The elder Dent used a coin to decide if he should beat them or not, but always beat them because both sides were heads, which led to Harvey developing a dual personality (later called Two-Face) that was obsessed with duality. Harvey's mother eventually fled when he was still a child; while it was to escape the abuse, Christopher argued it was because she was afraid of how Dents had a darkness in their brains that made them destroy anything good in the world.

Due to the death of Bruce Wayne's parents, his grief would be cared for by Dr. Leslie Thompkins, who was also fostering Harvey when he needed to flee from his father. Harvey and Bruce would become best friends, akin to brothers, and they would confide in each other their respective problems; when Bruce visited Harvey at home, he would attempt to dissuade Mr. Dent from angrily lashing out. On the eve of Bruce's odyssey to master the skills needed to become Gotham's protector, he gave Harvey the money needed for him to go to law school.

Despite his horrendous conditions as a child, Harvey went to college where he studied law and graduated, becoming a lawyer. Over the years, he became known as the "White Knight" of Gotham City due to his hard crackdown on organised crime and violence. Sometime shortly before the events on Christmas Eve, Harvey Dent ran for D.A. in Gotham City and won the elections on the day on Christmas Eve; at 27 years old, he was the youngest D.A. in the city's history. When he and Bruce visit Christopher to inform him, the latter irritably accused Harvey of trying to make him look bad in comparison; Christopher also threatened that their familial "curse" would be revealed with the Harvey in the spotlight, causing everyone to despise him. In cold anger, Harvey head-butted his father hard enough to knock him down to the floor, while Bruce held Harvey back to calm him down.

Pre-Arkham Storyline[]

Batman: Arkham Origins[]

Although Harvey Dent does not appear, in the GCPD building, there is a newspaper which states that Harvey has been elected D.A. of Gotham City, however, it is unlikely he has yet been established as Gotham's "White Knight" at this stage. In his base, Enigma has been investigating Batman's true identity and has listed that Harvey (as well as Bruce Wayne) are possible suspects for being Batman.

Pre-Batman: Arkham Shadow[]

Due to a troubled childhood, a family history of mental illness, a stressful career, and the unfortunate choice of Dr. Jonathan Crane as a therapist, Harvey Dent's latent dissociative identity disorder gets worse. At some point, this results in a new persona, the "Rat King", taking over for periods of time without Dent being aware of it. This persona begins spreading radically anti-authoritarian propaganda, primarily via radio.

This propaganda finds an audience in the most desperate and disillusioned members of Gotham society, who quickly flock to the cause; forming a cult with a manifesto ("Rodent Recipes: Formulas for Rebellion") and a confused mythology, including a prophecy that the Rat King would be "born" in Blackgate Prison. The Rat King and his followers' archnemesis were the GCPD, the Court System and their holy place Blackgate; collectively referred to as the cops, the court and the clink. The Rat King holds no regard for life of any kind, not even his own as he allows his Rats to launch an attack right outside his campaign headquarters; killing at least one.

Batman: Arkham Shadow[]

Harvey Dent is the District Attorney in Gotham City whilst unknowingly running the Rats. Three years into the Batman's protection of Gotham and several months after the Joker's Christmas Eve rampage, the Rats take three GCPD Officers hostage in the sewers whilst rioting in the streets. It is here that the Rat King first "encounters" Batman when the Dark Knight interrupts a transmitted speech to the Rats. Soon after, Harvey Dent is in Commissioner Gordon's "Pigsty" organizing their efforts against the Rats; unknowingly recounting the actions "he" ordered. During a visit to the Solomon Wayne Courthouse, the Rats storm the building and take Harvey hostage to execute but he is saved by Batman.

Later, Harvey is accidentally scarred by Jonathan Crane during a hearing for Matches Malone. After being discovered as the Rat King by Batman, which was also a revelation for himself, he attempts to execute Joe Chill for murdering Bruce Wayne's parents, but is talked out of it by Batman, who achieves it by unmasking himself.

While Dent's other alter, Two-Face, has been periodically surfacing, it becomes a dominant personality upon the reveal of Bruce Wayne being Batman. Two-Face flips his coin to decide their fates, which is implied to be a bad result as he quotes his father with "bad news, kid." When Batman tries to pull Two-Face back from the rooftop's edge, he drags them both over but both survive although the trauma, concussive injury, disruption of his brainwaves due to alternate personalities emerging, and side effects of Crane's chemicals leave Dent without recent memories, so he does not recall Batman's true identity when Bruce Wayne and Dr. Leslie Tompkins visit him in Blackgate infirmary. Bruce and Leslie attempt to comfort and reassure Harvey of their support, but Two-Face manifests again, ominously declaring it is the beginning of both him and Dent.

Arkham Storyline[]

Two-Face is sent to Arkham Asylum when it reopens for treatment and is amongst the criminals informed of the Joker torturing Jason Todd in a condemned wing of Arkham; taking his turn in torturing the boy. For unknown reasons, he was never interviewed by Dr. Penelope Young for induction into her TITAN Program but is in on the Joker's Arkham takeover plot.

Assault on Arkham[]

Two-Face is seen briefly in Arkham when Harley Quinn and the Suicide Squad raid Arkham in search of the Joker's bomb. He is able to escape when the Joker releases every single inmate in Arkham though he is eventually recaptured.

Batman: Arkham Asylum[]

All units, all units, the Second National Bank was just robbed by Harvey Dent AKA Two-Face. Two officers down, the suspect is fleeing in their patrol car.
~ The GCPD Dispatch.

Two-Face manages to escape Arkham Asylum sometime before or during the early stages of the Joker's takeover and plots to raid the Gotham City Second National Bank whilst Batman and the GCPD are dealing with the mad clown. Within Controlled Access, Dent's half-damaged and half normal cell is found to help the Batman solve the Riddler's twisted games.

During the night, Two-Face attacks the Gotham City Bank but ends up being confronted by two officers who he shoots and then escapes in their cop car. After the Joker's riot is defeated though, Batman hears of Two-Face's attack and goes to stop him in the Batwing which results in his recapture.

Escape from Arkham Asylum[]

After taking down some thugs in Gotham City, Batman discovers that various criminals and villains have escaped from Arkham Asylum. Quincy Sharp then states that it's the last straw and Arkham City will be built in order to ensure the imprisonment of the criminals. In the streets of Gotham, Batman defeats some of Two-Face's henchmen and then finally confronts Two-Face. Before attempting murder upon the masked vigilante, he flipped his coin and then pulled out two machine guns to fight Batman. Batman throws a Batarang at him, disarming Dent of his weapons. Eventually, Batman finally comes face to face with Two-Face and fought in hand-to-hand combat but Batman manages to successfully defeat him and have him captured. On the newspaper, it shows Batman holding Two-Face by his neck.

Pre-Arkham City[]

During the Joker's takeover of Arkham Asylum, the Asylum is destroyed so it is shut down and abandoned six months later in favour of a new prison named Arkham City. As a result, all of the criminals in Arkham Asylum and Blackgate Prison are transferred there which includes Two-Face and his gang. Now at war with the Joker and Penguin, Two-Face raids the Solomon Wayne Courthouse which he and his gang claim as thier base and place the Calendar Man in the basement cells.

Inside this courthouse, Two-Face and his gang begin holding kangaroo courts where the gang "judge" those who cross them and determine whether to execute them based on a flip of the coin. At the same time though, Dent begins recruiting inmates en-mass using "using tried and true campaign tactics" as, although Two-Face is dangerous, he is neither considered as cruel as the Penguin or as deranged and unpredictable as the Joker.

Arkham City[]

TwoFaceBatman

Two-Face is defeated by Batman

If the Catwoman pack is downloaded, Two-Face captures Catwoman at gunpoint before she can steal from him in the courthouse.

In the main story, Batman hears from an intercepted radio signal from a TYGER guard that Two-Face has Catwoman held captive in the Solomon Wayne Courthouse. Batman fought Two-Face's henchmen to get in the courthouse. He sees Two-Face starting a kangaroo trial with Catwoman suspended above a vat of acid. Before starting the trial, he flips his coin in the air, landing on its good side. Batman takes out the gunman at the top before fighting his henchmen on the floor. After he defeats them, Two-Face shot Batman through the panel and tries to kill Catwoman. He flips his coin again, this time landing on the bad side. Before he could kill her, Catwoman breaks free, scratches the scarred half of his face, and knocks his gun away from him. Catwoman says "No gun Harv?" and Two-Face reveals another gun but Batman uses his grappling hook to suspend him atop the vat of acid. Two-Face vows that he will be back. After Batman escapes the subway after leaving Wonder City, if he goes inside the museum, he will see Two-Face's henchmen taunting Penguin, hinting that he will take over his base of operations. Due to being in hiding somewhere in the prison, Two-Face survives Protocol Ten and remains an active threat unlike his rivals.

After the main story ends, Catman heads to her apartment to retrieve the stuff she has stolen from Hugo Strange, only to trigger a bomb set by Two-Face. She survives and attacks the henchmen checking up to see if she is dead. One of the henchmen reveals that Two-Face is in the museum so she heads there and fights off his henchmen. Catwoman enters the room that Two-Face is in, feeling confident that his gang will take over Arkham and Gotham after taking over Penguin's base and hearing about Joker's death; revealing Two-Face to be the ultimate victor of the gang war. If a henchmen sees an unconscious body or if Two-Face sees Catwoman, he will go ballistic, walk to different places and shoot a bazooka-type firearm all over the place. After Catwoman has taken out enough henchmen and takes down Two-Face, she threatens to scratch him again unless he gives her stuff back. Two-Face replies that he only kept half and gave the rest away to a select henchmen. Catwoman knocks him out and hunts down the henchmen to get the rest of her stuff back.

Pre-Arkham Knight[]

Two-Face is later arrested with all other surviving inmates in Arkham City when the GCPD storm the prison and shut it down. However, Hugo Strange's mass murder of prisoners during Protocol 10 violates their constitutional rights and the GCPD are forced to release all of the prisoners which includes Dent.

Over the next nine months, like the rest of Gotham's underworld, Two-Face and his gang stay quiet which brings an unnatural quiet to Gotham City. At some point before Halloween 2015 however, Two-Face joins Scarecrow's army as part of his plan to destroy Batman's legacy. The Penguin is distrusting of the Arkham Knight but he begrudgingly agrees to hand out weapons to Two-Face while Scarecrow and the Knight lead their army against Batman. Despite this, the Penguin tries to get the better of Two-Face, only for one of his jobs to be intercepted by the Arkham Knight and thus stopped as this could sabotage the alliance.

Arkham Knight[]

2FaceArkham

Nine months after Arkham City, the Penguin and Two-Face lead the criminal rampage in Gotham; both working together to slay multiple cops before going their separate ways. Whereas the other criminals strike hard at Gotham City, Two-Face instead aims to rob every bank in the city.

Starting immediately after Batman delivers Poison Ivy to the Botanical Gardens, Two-Face's thugs raid the Bank in Chinatown; ramming a garbage truck through the front doors. After Batman stops Two-Face's thugs from robbing all three banks, Two-Face will come in the final bank with a platoon of Militia and face Batman. After Batman defeats Two-Face and some of his thugs, Batman will take him to the GCPD to be locked up with the other villains that Batman has defeated. When his henchman tells Batman to hands off their boss, Two-Face tells his gang to save their breaths when they get their chance before Batman assumes "Not anytime soon."

Flip of a Coin[]

However, whilst his men are captured in Gotham, Two-face has also sent men to Blüdhaven to empty the banks there. As Nightwing is busy in Gotham helping Batman, Two-Face's men in Blüdhaven are unopposed and are able to steal loads of money whilst Two-Face breaks out of jail. After the Knightfall Protocol, Tim Drake infiltrates the Hell's Gate Waste Disposal Facility which Two-Face uses to launder his money. After defeating Two-Face's men, Robin faces Two-Face himself, who overpowers the young hero by shooting him in the foot. As Robin lies on the ground, Two-Face prepares to finish him off but is distracted when Barbara overrides the loudspeakers in the room, giving Robin the opportunity to lunge at Two-Face and knock him out. He does not regain consciousness afterwards and is left for the Blüdhaven Police.

What happened to Two-Face after this is unclear but it's likely that he is sent to Arkham Asylum after it reopens.
