This page is about the incarnation of Two-Face from Tim Burton's Batman and Joel Schumacher's Batman Forever. The mainstream version can be found here: Two-Face (DC). For his Earth-89 counterpart, see: Two-Face (Earth-89).

Villain Overview

One man is born a hero, his brother a coward. Babies starve, politicians grow fat. Holy men are martyred, and junkies grow legion. Why? Why, why, why, why, why? Luck! Blind, stupid, simple, doo-dah, clueless LUCK!
~ Two-Face to a security guard
The Bat's stubborn refusal to expire… IS DRIVING US INSANE!
~ Two-Face
Very punctual, even for his own funeral! Boys, kill the Bat!
~ Two-Face

Harvey Dent, also known as Two-Face, is a minor character in Tim Burton's 1989 film Batman and one of the two main antagonists (alongside the Riddler) of Joel Schumacher's 1995 threequel Batman Forever.

He is the former District Attorney of Gotham City who became a supervillain after gangster Boss Maroni disfigured half of his face with acid. He joins the Riddler in a plan to humiliate, unmask, and kill Batman. He is also Robin's arch-nemesis, as he killed his parents and brother while trying to kill Batman.

In Batman, he was portrayed by Billy Dee Williams, who later reprised his role in Batman '89 and voiced his The Lego Batman Movie incarnation and also played Agent Jeffries in Mask of Death. In Batman Forever, he was portrayed by Tommy Lee Jones, who also played John Neville in Eyes of Laura Mars, William Strannix in Under Siege, Ryan Gaerity in Blown Away, Major Chip Hazard in Small Solders, Robert Dewey in Jason Bourne and H. Clifford McBride in Ad Astra.

Biography[]

Batman[]

We've received a letter from Batman this morning: Please inform the citizens of Gotham that Gotham City has earned a rest of crime. But if the forces of evil should rise again, to cast a shadow on the heart of the city, call me.
~ Harvey Dent
Billy Dee Williams as Harvey Dent

Dent before his disfigurement.

Dent first appears during a press event announcing his and Mayor Borg's plans to make Gotham City a safer place for decent people, mentioning how Comissioner James Gordon was dismantling several front companies used by the Gothamite crime lord Carl Grissom to carry out his illegal activities, unaware that Batman, whom Dent believes to just be "stories of ghosts and goblins", has also been aiding in their crusade to stop Grissom by providing them with evidence. The next day, Dent meets up with Gordon and Borg to discuss the preparations to celebrate Gotham City's Bicentennial, though Dent and Gordon are concerned with the public safety, yet Borg dismisses their concerns and promises to allow businesses back once Grisson is behind bars. That night, Dent attends with them the fundraiser party at Wayne Manor. During the event, he is asked by reporter Alexander Knox about his opinion of Batman, leading Dent to dismiss Batman's existence as just lies.

Once the Joker rises to prominence and Grissom and Vinnie Ricorso are killed, Dent and Borg appear on Action News, though Dent declines to comment. He is later tasked by Borg to find the deadly health and beauty productions filled with the Joker's Smylex venom so the celebration of Gotham's Bicentennial doesn't go wrong. While they eventually get the deadly mixtures, Dent goes along with Gordon and Borg to announce their decision to cancel the 200th Anniversary Parade, but the Joker interrupts their announcement by giving "free money" before Batman appears on scene to stop him. Later that night, the Joker is killed and Batman is hailed as a hero. Sometime afterwards, Dent attends a conference to read a letter he received from Batman, who asks him to unveil the Bat-signal to call him whenever the Gothamites are in danger, leading Dent and Gordon to make use of the Bat-signal for the first time.

Batman Forever[]

Harvey Dent (Batman Forever)

Harvey Dent before being horribly deformed by Boss Maroni.

When Dent returns to Gotham, following the deaths of the Penguin and Max Shreck, he cross-examined Boss Maroni during a trial. Maroni tried to kill him by throwing acid into his face. Although Batman tried to save Dent, the acid managed to burn the left half of Harvey's face. Dent blamed Batman for his disfigurement, and vowed to destroy the Dark Knight. He developed a second personality called Two-Face and used a two headed coin, one side clean and one side scarred, to make decisions. He would also refer to himself in the plural.

Dent was eventually arrested and retained in Arkham Asylum. Two-Face escaped from his cell on the second anniversary of his arrest; his escape being discovered by Dr. Burton, who contacted the Gotham City Police Department.

Two-Face[]

For your dying pleasure, we are serving the very same acid that made us the men we are today!
~ Two-Face

Two-Face and his thugs robbed the Second Bank of Gotham. They had taken hostages and looked like they were going to get away when Batman intervened and stopped the robbery. However, Two-Face escaped.

Two-Face circus BF

Two-Face at the circus.

Later on, Two-Face traveled to the circus looking for Batman. With the circus currently holding a fundraiser that was attended by Gotham's elite, Two-Face concluded that the odds were excellent that at least one of them knew the Dark Knight's identity if they weren't Batman himself, and threatened to blow the place up unless his enemy turned himself over (although the subsequent riot in the circus prevented Bruce Wayne from obeying his order). He was responsible for the origin of Robin because when The Flying Graysons tried to stop him, they were all killed by Two-Face. Dick, the youngest Grayson, survived and went on to join Batman as Robin.

Meeting the Riddler[]

You’ve broken into our hideout, you’ve violated the sanctity of our lair.... for this we should crush your bones into powder. However, you pose a most interesting proposition, therefore heads, we accept; and tails, we blow your damn head off!
~ Two-Face, before agreeing to team up with Riddler.

At his lair, which was split in half like his personality, Two-Face had two henchwomen, Sugar and Spice, who worked for him. Spice favored his 'dark', scarred side, while Sugar favored his 'good' unscarred side. While the three were about to have Harvey's favorites, the Riddler showed up and offered Two-Face a proposal: Two-Face helped the Riddler steal enough money so he could become Gotham's cleverest carbon-based life form, and in return, the Riddler would help him discover the identity of Batman so that they can use it to plot Batman's downfall. With a flip of a coin marking heads in favor of the deal, Two-Face agreed to the Riddler's terms.

Two-Face joined forces with the Riddler and they committed crimes together. The two robbed a building and soon discovered Batman's true identity: Bruce Wayne.

The Assault on Wayne Manor[]

No killing.
~ Two-Face to Riddler before they entered Wayne Manor.

After they discovered Batman's true identity, Two-Face, Riddler, and the former's henchmen infiltrated Wayne Manor on Halloween Night. While Two-Face and his henchmen attacked Bruce and Dr. Chase Meridian while he flipped his coin, which kept landing on good side for Alfred and Chase, and prevented him from doing anything bad, Riddler destroyed the Batcave. As soon as the scarred side of his coin came up for Bruce, Two-Face shot Bruce with his pistol, and grazed him in the head. Two-Face wished to finish him off, but Riddler intervened, kidnapped Dr. Meridian, and left behind another riddle.

Demise[]

Two-Face's Death (Batman Forever)

Two-Face falling to his death at the Riddler's Lair on Claw Island.

Yes, of course you're right, Bruce. Emotion is always the enemy of true justice. Thank you, you've always been a good friend.
~ Two-Face's last words to Batman prior to his death.

At the Riddler's lair, Claw Island, Batman and Robin got separated. Robin eventually fought Two-Face and even had the chance to kill him, but didn't, because he refused to be like him. Two-Face then managed to capture Robin, and brought him to Riddler. Batman confronted the two villains and they revealed that they had both Robin and Dr. Meridian captured, and then Riddler sent them falling to their deaths, which left Batman to save them. Batman managed to save the pair, but Two-Face flipped his coin and decided that he'll go after them. While Two-Face waited to see what side his coin landed while he had his gun pointed at the trio, Batman tossed up a bunch of identical coins which made Two-Face panic and he slipped and fell into the watery bed of spikes, which ended his life once and for all and avenged the deaths of The Flying Graysons. In his open hand is his two faced coin-good side up.

Quotes[]

You're counting on the winged avenger to deliver you from evil, aren't you, my friend?
~ Dent's first lines as Two-Face.
Ah, fortune smiles. Another day of wine and roses, or in your case, beer and pizza!
~ Two-Face.
Let’s start this party with a bang!
~ Two-Face.
WHY CAN'T YOU JUST DIE?!
~ Two-Face
All those heroics for nothing. No more riddles, no more curtains one and two, just plain curtains.
~ Two-Face

Trivia[]

  • In his life as "Two Face" everything is either good/white bad/black. His suit is half white/black; he has two guns white revolver and a black automatic; he smokes a white cigerete and a black cigar. Sugar half of his hideout is in white; Spice half of the hideout is black; a white TV that shows good programs and a black TV that shows evil programs.
  • Tommy Lee Jones was the first and only choice for the role and he's the first one who's cast in Batman Forever. Jones accepted the role because the character of Two-Face was his son's favorite character.
  • Sugar and Spice are seen running away after Riddler's communications are destroyed; in the novelization by Peter David, they're with the guy in the yacht.
  • Despite the different race of actors, this version of Harvey Dent was the same one as seen in the 1989 Batman film played by Billy Dee Williams.
    • It has been confirmed that the retconned sequel Batman '89 comic book series, set in the Burtonverse, will depict Two-Face as well. However, rather than this version of Two-Face, the comic will depict a darker Two-Face drawn in Tim Burton's gothic style and based on Billy Dee Williams' likeness as the series will pick up from the events of Batman Returns, disregarding the two sequels Joel Schumacher made as a separate continuity apparently.
    • An in-universe explanation can be vitiligo. Nevertheless, even before the comics essentially split the timeline, people would use this to say that Batman Forever was set in a separate continuity, and criticized the film for it.
  • In the novelization of Batman Forever, Dent and Batman first directly allied to take down the remaining members of the Red Triangle Circus Gang. The novelization also changes his death scene; in the book, Two-Face commits suicide by throwing himself in the pit after Robin confronts him with what he has become since his disfigurement.
  • Two-Face's suit can be seen in the sequel Batman & Robin, in which it is held in the confiscating room at Arkham Asylum along with The Riddler's costume.
  • The scene where Two-Face panics about his missing coin after Batman throws a bunch of identical coins somewhat mirrors the scene where Batman threw a bunch of identical coins at Two Face to make him panic from the Batman: The Animated Series episode "Two-Face".
  • This is the only incarnation of Harvey Dent in either animated or live action media outside of the comics that has been scarred by Sal Maroni. Most of the time, another perpetrator takes Maroni's role in turning Dent into Two-Face.
  • This is also the only incarnation of Two-Face to lack the bulged eyeball and exposed teeth.
  • Harvey Dent (played by Billy Dee Williams) was intended to return in Batman Returns, where he gets into an accident caused by the Red Triangle Gang during the Gotham City mayhem and he flips a coin at the end. Tim Burton rejected that idea, because he wanted Batman Returns to be a completely different film and wants nothing to do with the first Batman film at all.
  • He is the only antagonist in Batman Forever to die.
