Harvey Dent, also known as Two-Face and formerly known as The White Knight of Gotham, is a major character in the 2023 DC original TV series Gotham Knights. He is a former district attorney and a close friend of the late Bruce Wayne, who was secretly known as Batman.

Following Bruce’s murder, Harvey’s investigation over his friend’s death got him into conflict with Bruce’s adopted son Turner Hayes and his friends and would ultimately result in half of his face being horrifically scarred, leading to his rise as one of the most feared and prolific criminals in Gotham City.

Harvey was also the lover of the identity thief and con artist Jane Doe, but by proxy given that he was under the control of his dark alter-ego at that time, but because of the “romantic affair” he had with her, he ended up becoming the father of Jane’s daughter Duela Doe.

He was portrayed by Misha Collins, who is known for his role as Castiel in Supernatural.

Biography[]

Early life[]

Harvey Dent was born in an unknown date in 1967 as part of the upper-middile-class. His father had suffered from a mental disorder that made him have a double personality, something that his son would inherit in his life. While a part of his personality is that of a warm and kind father, however, there is also a dark personality that made him violent and abusive, and this alter-ego made him beat Harvey in his childhood. Later in his life, Harvey inherited the same disorder as his father had with his own split personalities; One that has a sense of justice and the other has a brash and shameless demeanor.

Under the control of his alter-ego, Harvey feared that his father would one day kill him so while the latter was leaning on a railing, he loosened the railing’s bolt, causing his father to fall to his death. For most of his life, Harvey came to believe that it was an accident.

Later in his adulthood, Harvey studied law and eventually became a prosecutor nicknamed the White Knight of Gotham for his dedication to maintaining law and order in Gotham City. It was during this time he met billionaire Bruce Wayne, who secretly lives a double life as the vigilante Batman, and two would form a close friendship, forming a brotherhood between them. Harvey became an uncle-like figure to Bruce’s adopted son Turner Hayes, when the latter was adopted.

Meeting Jane Doe and Rebecca March[]

At an unknown point in time, he encountered local con artist and identity thief Jane Doe. With his alter-ego taking control of him again, Harvey fell in love with her and the two would have a romantic fling, but when Jane interacted with him, Harvey regained control of himself and believe Jane to be a delusional psychopath who is obsessed with him and has her confined to Arkham Asylum. However, unbeknownst to Harvey, Jane, because of their affair, gave birth to her daughter Duela during her confinement.

Seeking to protect her from the world, Jane went to the Joker, the most prolific murderer in Gotham, and requests that he raise Duela under the pretense that he is her father, which he agrees, and while growing up Duela believed the Joker is her father not knowing of her true parentage, something that she would learn later on in her life. An apparent short time later, Harvey would meet Rebecca March, the husband of Lincoln March, whom he had a brief affair with before breaking up with her, due to her marriage to Lincoln. As time passed, Harvey’s alter-ego gradually disappeared and didn’t seem to no longer emerge.

Hunting down Turner Hayes and his friends[]

In the wake of Bruce Wayne’s death, as he was secretly murdered by the Talon, Turner Hayes and his friends, which includes Duela Doe and the Row Siblings, Harper & Cullen Row, were immediately accused of murdering the Dark Knight, due to the Court of Owls secretly framing them by hacking into the bank system to withdraw $100,000 and transferring them into Turner and his friend’s bank accounts, leading them to be suspected of killing Bruce just so they could obtain his fortune. Falsely believing the teens to have killed his friend, Harvey Dent was tasked with hunting them down to have them arrested, but the group were able to continuously evade him, which amplified his anger and making him more unstable.

He was eventually captured by Jane Doe, who then influences Duela to kill him under the belief that he is nothing more than a monster who had abandoned her and wrongly had her mother locked up in Arkham Asylum, despite Harvey’s attempt to reason with them, which was for naught. Under Jane’s influence, Duela supposedly kills Harvey as a decision-making tool but he later turned out to have survived as he had used his coin to stop the bullet. Later, though he had begun a campaign to run for mayor, his reputation was tarnished when Duela’s true parentage was leaked online, causing the public to realize that Harvey is her biological father. This shocking scandal ended up crushing his chances of becoming Mayor of Gotham, which was taken over by Lincoln March, who wasted no time in firing Harvey from his job.

Rise of Two-Face[]

During a tense confrontation (or rather a reunion) with Rebecca, who had taken Duela hostage to force his other self out, Harvey bonds with his daughter and discovers Rebecca’s true identity as Rebecca Leviticus, the scientist working for the Court of Owls who experimented on electron so she could live for a century. Despite Rebecca claiming to be genuinely in love with Harvey, however, he rejected him, and he lets out his alter-ego, leading to a scuffle that ended with Rebecca smashing a vial of acid on his face, leaving half of it scarred, to Duela’s horror. Harvey was then beaten and taken away. The experience ultimately pushed him over the edge; having lost his sanity, he gave in to his sinister side, even though his alter ego was no longer in his subconscious, becoming ‘Two-Face’.

Seeking revenge on Jane for trying to get him killed and the fact that she had sold Duela to the Court of Owls, he tracks her to her caravan, where she had taken her payment from the Court. As he chastise her for hurting and selling out their daughter, he reveals his half-scarred face, leaving her shocked. Jane pleaded Two-Face to give her another chance, so he decided to use his coin to decide her fate, declaring tails she would live and heads she would die. When the coin landed on heads, which is the scarred side, this dictates that Jane should die so he shoots her to death, thus getting his revenge.

Trivia[]

This is the fifth live-incarnation of Two-Face.
Initially in the series, Harvey’s last name was going to be “Kent”, but DC changed it to being ‘Dent’, like his mainstream incarnation, so as to avoid confusion between him and Superman’s civilian name ‘Clark Kent’.
At the Supernatural Indy Convention, Misha Collins, who played the character, claimed that Harvey Dent won’t become Two-Face in the show’s first season and that only his dark side will be explored. However, later online posts and his appearance in the season finale contradicted this, as he was shown to have become Two-Face in the final episode.
As the TV series only ran for one season, Two-Face’s story arc isn’t explored further, due to the show’s cancellation, leaving it at a cliffhanger, something that Misha Collins found disappointing, as he admitted on Twitter that he felt ‘incredibly bummed’ by it.
