Two is a minor antagonist in Season 4 of the Netflix original series Stranger Things. He was one of Martin Brenner's test subjects at Hawkins National Laboratory. Once feeling inferior to fellow subject Eleven, he gathered up other psychics and brutally assaulted her.
He is portrayed by Tristan Spohn.
Biography[]
Two was born circa the 1960's with telekinetic abilities. He would eventually be taken to Hawkins Lab under the care of Dr. Martin Brenner under the name "Two", becoming the oldest known experiment. Next to 011 he was the most powerful and gifted test subject. He grew jealous of her when she improved, and tried to harm her alongside Three, Four and Five. This backfired as Brenner found out about his actions and electroshocked him, sending him to the infirmary. After recovering, Two goes to the Rainbow Room where he and several of test subjects are attacked by One who kills all of the test subjects. Two is the last subject to be killed by One which is witnessed by Eleven before One is banished into the Upside Down.
Appearance[]
Two is a tall and slender young teenage boy who wears shaven hair like the other test subjects, which appears to have been blonde. He was usually seen equipped with a lab gown, as with the others, as well as the number 002 tattooed on his arm. Two also has blue eyes.
Personality[]
“ | You think because you demonstrate some talent that you're somehow immune to the rules, is that it? | „ |
~ Martin Brenner describing Two's behavior to him. |
Two can be described as nothing more than a pubescent bully whose powers have given him an immense sense of untouchability. This is especially shown by how he picks on Eleven, despite her being about five years younger than him, showing he'll hurt a younger child.
Having been kept in a lab for likely his whole life and repeatedly tortured has possibly twisted him into the person he is now, an obedient lab rat obsessed with power. He has an obsessive need for Brenner's father-like approval and attention and can't accept the idea of losing in front of him. He is also prone to jealousy, as he doesn't understand why Brenner wastes time on his "sister", Eleven.
As the most powerful psychic (to his knowledge), Two thinks of himself as above following rules and holds a leadership over much of the other subjects, shown by how they naturally view him as an older-brother figure. They're respect for him appears to be genuine as they laugh at his jokes and feel angered when he is hurt. While he gets along with most of the subjects, he specifically ridicules and undermines Eleven, often insulting her around the others.
He feels the desperate need to prove he is the most powerful psychic and is not above using cowardly methods to do so. This is shown when Eleven beats him in a fight. He is unable to accept his defeat and waits till there are no cameras operating then gangs up with 3 other psychics to torment Eleven, continuing to insult and abuse her even when she is crying. He feels no guilt over this and threatens to kill her if she tells anyone. He even jokes later that her injuries came from "falling," but his cruel joke and poor decision to mention it caused Brenner to realize he'd attacked Eleven.
Understandably for his age and conditions growing up, Two is somewhat short-sighted in thinking. Unlike Eleven and other subjects who use their powers flexibly, Two relies on brute force with his telekinetic abilities, showing he likes to overwhelm his targets in one fell swoop and has no creative talent, which mainly causes his loss against Eleven. He does his best to cover up his act of harming Eleven but is not very good at lying as her injuries appear blatantly obvious. When being tortured, punished, and humiliated for being found out, he still takes no responsibility for his actions and his hatred for Eleven grows even more, despite her saying nothing about him. According to One, he was fully willing to gather up the other experiments and kill her out of spite for "humiliating him". This could've been a fabrication, but it wouldn't be out of character for him to do.
Quotes[]
“ | Two: How'd that feel? Did you like that? (looks to see security camera) See a light? Three: Something must've happened to the power. |
„ |
~ Two and his cronies harassing Eleven, knowing the security camera is off. |
“ | Martin Brenner: Then why did you attack Eleven? Two: Did she tell you that? Martin Brenner: Are you asking the questions or am I? Did you attack Eleven? Two: If she told you that, then... then she's lying. (Brenner amps up shock collar) Papa, please, you have to believe me. Papa, please. She' lying - (Brenner shocks Two and he screams) Martin Brenner: Now, shall we try again? What happened? Two: It was an accident. (Two gets shocked more) |

Powers & Abilities[]
Like the other test subjects, Two possessed psychic abilities, including telekinesis. He was the most powerful aside from One and arguably Eleven, though unlike the other two he relied on sheer strength in his powers.
Two also possesses a natural leadership over the other psychics, mostly the second older ones. They are fully willing to obey his orders and cover for his actions.
Trivia[]
- He is seemingly a parallel to Eleven's current bully, Angela:
- They both repeatedly abuse Eleven and eventually get punished when she finally fights back (while Eleven doesn't tattle on either.)
- They both then gather up their friends to target her through different forms of abuse.
- They end up getting what they deserve, though only Angela got hurt by Eleven directly while Two ended up being brutally murdered by One.
- He is similar to Tomoo from Elfen Lied, as both are the leader of a group of bullies who torment a girl with psychic powers before being killed, and his name even sounds similar.
- In an interview, Tristan Spohn describes his character as a deeply tragic individual who has been tortured and abused his entire life, yet still seeking Brenner's fatherly affection despite his abuse, even feeling sympathy for his character.[1] However, the show itself doesn't confirm this.
