What does it feel like... to lose? At first, I woke up naked, covered in blood, no idea of what happened. Over time, I started to remember. Everything. The sound of their screams, the panic in their eyes, and fear so primal you could taste it. And it was delicious. You have no idea what's coming.
~ Tyler confessing to Wednesday about being the Hyde monster.

Tyler Galpin, also known as The Hyde, is the secondary antagonist in Season 1 of the 2022 Netflix TV Show Wednesday. He is the son of Donovan Galpin and his late wife, Francoise Galpin. He works as a barista at the Weathervane Café and develops an interest for Wednesday Addams midway into the show. He is the accomplice to Laurel Gates's plan of revenge against Nevermore Academy and the killer in the Jericho monster killings.

His nature as a Hyde was dormant throughout his childhood until a regular at the Weathervane, Marilyn Thornhill, who was really Laurel Gates, revealed to him the truth about he and his late mother being Hydes. Laurel manipulated and abused Tyler in order to unlock his Hyde and gain control over him. She brainwashes him to the extent that in the last episode of the season, Tyler reveals that he actually acquired control over his Hyde and serves Laurel voluntarily.

He was portrayed by Hunter Doohan.

Biography[]

Not long after Tyler’s birth, his mother’s postpartum depression triggered the release of her Hyde, which then led her to be institutionalized. After Francoise died from unknown causes. his father, the Sheriff of Jericho, began neglecting and distancing himself from his son as he feared that Tyler might have inherited his late mother's Hyde nature.

This neglect would have a devastating effect on Tyler as he would take out his anger and abandonment issues out on Outcasts from the school Nevermore Academy. After one incident where Tyler and his friends assaulted Nevermore student Xavier Thorpe and destroyed a mural he painted. Although he was court-ordered to attend therapy sessions with Dr. Valerie Kinbott. The sheriff also responded by deciding to send Tyler to a boot camp. There Tyler became much more in control of his emotions and became a kind, helpful, and somewhat introverted, young man. He then got a job as a barista at a coffee shop called the Weathervane.

Sometime after getting this job, however, Tyler came under the attention of a Weathervane regular named Marilyn Thornhill, a botanical sciences teacher at Nevermore. Unbeknownst to him, Marilyn was actually Laurel Gates, the long presumed dead daughter of the outcast hating Gates Family, who kept tabs on all the outcasts in Jericho, including Tyler's own mother. Laurel had plans to groom and manipulate Tyler to her control by unlocking and using his Hyde form to gather body parts for a necromancy séance. Laurel eventually revealed to him the truth about his mother being a Hyde, something his father had kept concealed from him. Tyler also discovered that his mother died because Nevermore banned Hydes because of their dangerous behaviour and doesn't teach them how to control their powers.

As Tyler was reluctant to let Laurel unlock him, she then began holding Tyler captive in a remote cave where she used a plant chemical to unlock his Hyde, which makes the user transform into a huge, violent, powerful, humanoid-like creature that bonds and obeys a master. She then tortured Tyler until he allowed Laurel to be his Hyde master, and he started to serve her voluntarily.

Prior to Wednesday Addams’s arrival at Nevermore, Tyler killed three people in his Hyde form. From there he would gather the necessary body parts from his victims and return them to the old Gate's house, where Laurel would store them. The day after he killed his third victim, Tyler was working at the Weathervane when he encountered Wednesday, who had escaped from a meeting with Dr. Kinbott. After Wednesday fixed a faulty coffee machine for him, Tyler took interest in her. When she later contacts him and asks for his help in getting out of Jericho, he agrees to do so.

On the night of the Jericho Harvest Festival, however, Wednesday encounters a vision of fellow Nevermore student Rowan Laslow being killed, so she runs after him into the woods, with Tyler turning into a Hyde shortly afterwards. In actuality, Rowan was attempting to kill Wednesday, but Tyler ambushed him in his Hyde form and killed him, saving Wednesday, who becomes determined to discover the monster's identity after this incident.

From then on, Tyler and Wednesday began to meet regularly at the Weathervane. On the night of Outreach Day, Tyler transformed and killed a homeless squatter. Later, Tyler seemingly becomes hurt after Wednesday asked out fellow Nevermore student Xavier Thorpe (although she did this because she thought he was the Hyde, not out of romantic interest). After Xavier finds out that Wednesday was only using him, he cancelled and Wednesday decided to steak out the Hyde's cave with her friend Eugene Ottinger instead. But Wednesday's friend Thing writes an invite to the dance from Wednesday to Tyler, forcing Wednesday to go to the Rave'N dance. Eugene meets Wednesday and Tyler at the entrance of the party and asks about the plan to steak out the Hyde's cave but understands that Wednesday had decided to go to the Rave'N dance and leaves to spy on the cave alone. Upon hearing about this plan, Tyler texts Laurel to warn that the Hyde cave was found out, so Laurel goes to the woods and sets fire on the cave. After a prank set off by local delinquents, Tyler leaves dance to turn into a Hyde while Wednesday encounters a vision of Eugene being attacked. Wednesday runs into the woods to look for Eugene, but Tyler attacked him first, leaving him heavily injured, but not dead.

Wednesday and Tyler continue to meet and discuss information about the Hyde killings, when one night, their information leads them to the Gates's House, where the two, along with Wednesday's roommate Enid, investigate the house. Enid and Wednesday go upstairs while Tyler stays downstairs and transforms into a Hyde. He begins chasing the two throughout the house, but they escape. To look innocent, Tyler scratches himself and transforms back into a human. Xavier shows up and he, Wednesday and Enid go back to Tyler's house to heal him. Suspicion from Wednesday leads her to believe that Xavier is the monster. She also suspects Dr. Kinbott of being Laurel Gates, but when Laurel realizes that the psychiatrist is close to discovering the truth about Tyler, she commands him to kill her before she can ruin her plans. After seeing forged evidence planted by either Tyler or Laurel, Wednesday reports Xavier and gets him arrested.

Later that night, Wednesday visits him in the Weathervane, where they kiss. This instantly causes Wednesday to experience another vision, this time of Tyler killing Dr. Kimbott, confirming that Tyler was the Hyde all along. She rushes out of the store and later confronts him with several other Nevermore students. They kidnap him and chain him to a chair. There Wednesday reveals she searched his family’s records and learned about his late mother being a Nevermore student, and how Tyler’s birth sent her to be committed after her own Hyde was unlocked. Wednesday then begins to torture him to see if he will transform. The sheriff then arrives and Wednesday gets caught and arrested for this. At the police station, Tyler privately confesses everything to Wednesday, saying that he didn't remember what he was doing at first, but he actually gained control over his Hyde form after some time (maintaining his awareness while transformed) and takes pleasure in his killings. He also looks satisfied with the current outcome of Wednesday's defeat and Laurel's win.

After Wednesday gets expelled, Tyler waits at the train station, hoping to intercept her there and kill her, but Wednesday never goes to the station because she discovers that Marilyn Thornhill and Laurel Gates are one and the same. Tyler returns to Nevermore and meets Wednesday in chains after she had been captured by Laurel. He teases Wednesday about the fact she is the one who is now in chains. Laurel tells him to wait in the woods and conducts the seance with the harvested body parts and revives her ancestor, Joseph Crackstone, who begins attacking the school with magic.

Later, Wednesday escapes and Tyler attacks her in the woods. Before he can kill her, however, he is suddenly attacked by Enid in her werewolf form. The two fight, with Tyler being stronger and nearly killing Enid, but the sheriff shoots at Tyler, distracting him long enough for Enid to knock him unconscious. After Laurel and Crackstone are defeated, a guilt-ridden Sheriff Galpin takes his son into custody. He is then placed in a straitjacket and escorted by a transport truck to the same psychiatric facility, where his mother was kept years earlier. While en route, Tyler begins to transform into his Hyde form and presumably escapes.

Personality[]

Established to have had prior anger issues during his childhood, Tyler later seems to grow into a helpful, kind, yet introverted person after attending therapy sessions with Dr. Kinbott. He rarely opens up to people and questions almost everything brought up to him. He never raises his voice and keeps a very calm and well-mannered persona. He is collected and doesn't show too much extreme emotion, though not to the degree of Wednesday. He does consistently show happiness and curiosity. However, from reports of Dr. Kinbott, Tyler seems to become cold and detached when the topic of his mother is brought up.

He has a strained relationship with his father, who neglected him because he feared that Tyler would end up like his mother. Tyler also expresses resentment towards his dad for not talking about his mother.

After confessing to Wednesday that he is in fact the Hyde, Tyler revealed a sadistic side, saying that he actually enjoys killing, although whether these are side effects of his Hyde state is unknown. He also likes to provoke Wednesday and takes pleasure in seeing her losing. Behind his calm and polite demeanor, Tyler actually hides a deep hatred for Wednesday, the Addams family and all the Nevermore Academy[1] after discovering that his mother was rejected for being a Hyde. He is filled with rage and desire for revenge, which is why he voluntary helps Laurel's plan and enjoys the murdering spree.[1]

Trivia[]

  • Some fans believe that the reveal of his true sadistic nature during his confession scene is merely an effect of the Hyde state and Laurel's control, as he is seen seemingly snapping out of a trance immediately after confessing to Wednesday (although this could be him attempting to look unsuspicious to anyone else present). However, since he continues to act the same way for the remainder of the last episode and he took actions outside of Laurel's knowledge and commands to prevent Wednesday from finding out about his and Laurel's identity (like at the Rave'N dance), this seems unlikely.
  • According to Hunter Doohan (Tyler's actor), Tyler was deceiving Wednesday the entire time and even if he felt any attraction or respect for her, there was no true romantic feelings. Tyler actually hated Wednesday and the rest of the Addams Family, and all of Nevermore because of what happened to his mother.[1]
  • With Laurel being either captured or killed after her defeat, Tyler is presumably now on his own, thus theorizing his next actions, as it is unknown if he will still act as a murderous monster independently or if he escaped Laurel’s control.
  • Tyler's Hyde form looks similar to the zombies from the Plants vs. Zombies franchise due to his face and bulging eyes.
