Typhon, also known as the Father of All Monsters is the overarching antagonist for the 2025 roguelike video game Hades 2.

Nicknamed "The King Of The Monsters", he was summoned by Chronos to seize Olympus and was awoken from his millennia-long slumber. He currently resides at the top of mount Olympus Summit, where Zeus and a variety of other gods including Ares are engaged with a battle within him, seemingly for eternity.

He was voiced by Logan Cunningham, who also voices Chronos in the same game.

Appearance[]

Typhon is colossal in size. As Melinoe has mentioned, if Polyphemus was the size of one unit, then he would be the size of around 100 of them. His skin has a blue-gray hue with a fleshy, outlined undertone, along with various pores/holes similar to the color of a ruby. Above on his head is a massive eye, which has the ability to unleash various energy attacks on his victims, which is adorned in gold. Alongside that, he has two horns, covered in golden adornments and rugged, rough edges. His jaw also is covered within reinforced dermal armor. In addition, he also has various, golden spikes within his back, with his tongue being replaced in lieu of a snake which can also fire energy attacks, but also remains as his critical weakpoint to the player.

Biography[]

Typhon was created as an experiment by Chaos, to which he later expresses severe regret to Melinoe.

Through unknown means, Typhon was recruited to the side of The Golden Legions, serving as Chrono's primary threat to not only siege olympus, but to also distract the Gods and prevent them from taking back the underworld. With Typhon's immense power, he formed an intense storm, covering the entire mountain within his monsters and also preventing further aid from coming in. This left some gods to defend the Rift of Thessaly as the revenants kept constituting/forming themselves night after night due to Chronos disrupting the cycle of life and death,

When Melinoe prevailed within the underworld, she received a distress signal to come upon the surface. She attempted to cross into the city of Ephyra however she found that her life force slowly disintegrated until she was forced back into the Crossroads. This was because of the three fates, that had passed a curse to the House of Hades which prevented them (with the exception of Thanatos and few other beings who needed to use the surface for their duties) from setting upon the surface without gaining serious illness eventually leading up to death. This curse is the reason why her brother, Zagreus was instantly killed every time he tried to venture beyond the area that Hades had chosen to battle his son night after night prior to the events of Hades II.

Over the course of her few short trips on the surface, she managed to discover an incantation that allowed her to remove the curse allowing her to venture there. She ventured through the city of Ephyra, slaying the undead so they could grasp a brief moment of eternal rest before facing Polyphemus and prevailing. Next, she traveled to the rift of Thessaly, disrupting the navy of the Golden Legions before facing off against Eris. Once she defeated Eris, she would then begin the long climb up to the summit, where Typhon was being held back by several gods. Prometheus briefly blocked her path and forbade her to pass, so she had to face off against him and his eagle before forcing him to stand down and vanish. From there, she proceeded onto the summit.

She had noticed that this certain part of the mountain was covered in grotesque and eldritch creatures - children of Typhon. She slayed these beasts before facing off against either Typhon's tail, or Eye. (NOTE: Depending if the player has enabled the Vow of Rivals or not, Melinoe's final "warden" to face before fighting Typhon will have different attack.) After vanquishing either the tail or the eye, a gate opens up to face Typhon. Hermes supplies Melinoe with various goods that she purchases before the final fight as Charon cannot reach the summit due to it being unsuitable for his boat. She opened the gate, and faced Typhon.

When Melinoe arrived, Typhon let a roar so loudly that it left Melinoe unable to sense his life force (The player will have noticed that Typhon's health bar vanishes from the screen, with the only indicator of how "healthy" the King Of Monsters is the condition of his face.) Typhon started various attacks against her, including shielding himself within the massive storm as he summoned his children to defend him. Melinoe may prevail against him, or have to start a new night in order to climb to the summit once more. If the player survives long enough, at half of his health Zeus may appear striking the King of Monsters down. Doing this will make Typhon lose consciousness and leave his mouth open, allowing the player to deal a higher amount of damage than normally allowed. Regardless, Typhon will rise from his unconsciousness. The player/Melinoe must finish the fight as he begins to fire a beam of energy from his tongue twice, dealing serious damage unless the player times their dashes/sprint through it or blocks it with either Nitro Sprint or a Hex that provides invulnerability. Melinoe defeats Typhon, and he curses Melinoe as he dies.

Melinoe discovers that he cannot be killed outright due to the disruption of Death with Chronos, which means he will inevitably return and walk up to the summit to face her and the Gods once more. Eventually, Melinoe repeatedly prevails against the monster, activating the final vow of Rivals, increasing Chrono's and Typhon's strength dramatically.

When Melinoe wins against Typhon several times, she will return to the crossroads and through Hecate, she learns an incantation. Hecate explains to her that the mistake that Chronos made was unleashing a monster that is fundamentally uncontrollable. With samples Melinoe has, along with "Entropy", she will create an incantation that will manipulate Typhon and make him use his own strength against him. The results of this incantation are currently unknown, or the incantation is impossible to perform due to the game being in Early Access. As a result, the outcome of this has yet to be seen until the 1.0 launch of the game.

Vow Of Rivals[]

When Melinoe prevailed against all her foes within their regular forms, the Oath of the Unseen appeared before the crossroad exits to the surface and to the underworld. Using this, she could swear vows to make her night more difficult in an attempt to "spread fear". One of these vows included the Vow of Rivals, which strengthens the guardians (the final boss at the end of each area, respectively) and gives them more attacks, stronger abilities, etc. With each set of guardians prevailed, she eventually was able to make certain incantations that allowed her to make the other guardians stronger, concluding with Typhon and Chronos.

Melinoe eventually activated the Vow Of Rivals, increasing it to its maximum power. She triumphed through Polyphemus, who was strengthened with Medea's poison cocktails and spells. She then sailed through the Rift of Thessaly on the spectral ships of the Golden Legions, triumphing over Eris who had gained the hidden aspect of her railgun, the Aspect of Lucifer. She then made her way up to the summit, facing Prometheus, Aetos and Heracles all at once. She fought through many of Typhon's creations and wardens, eventually making her way up to the top. As always, Hermes stashed some goods and wished her the best of luck before proceeding.

Upon entering the storm, she demanded Typhon to face her, but a familiar face appeared. Instead, Chronos appeared to greet her. Confused, she asked Chronos what he was doing there. Chronos responded with the following:

Chronos: Beg pardon the interruption, Granddaughter, but I have come to see the work of my monstrous associate upon these hallowed heights, for I have only heard the tales!
[Melinoe turns to face her grandfather and Typhon.]
Melinöe: I know the real reason on why you're here such a night. Well, I've grown accustomed to dealing with you and Typhon both. Perhaps not all at once..
Chronos: Oh, fear not, for I am but a harmless apparition presently. Harmless, inasmuch you cannot harm me at all. Although the other way around, we shall see...
~ Typhon, allied with Melinöe's greatest enemy prepares to do battle.

Melinoe drew her weapon out and prepared to face the two. Throughout the battle, she was met with harsh resistance, including the slicing of time by Chronos and extra head slams from Typhon. She maintained her resolve, insisting that Lord Zeus would come down and strike Typhon and the both of them down. Depending on how skilled the player is, Melinoe can prevail to the second half of the fight, or she may lose and have to trek the Summit/surface over again. If Melinoe manages to make it to the first quarter of the fight, Typhon laughs in her face. Her confusion quickly turned to a sense of dread as Chronos appeared in the sky above her and mocked her, asking if she was expecting someone else. He then used his chronokinesis to create several domes that would freeze moments in time. Depending on how skilled the player is oncemore, they may get stuck in one of these domes or may avoid the area which is being affected.

If the player/Melinoe manages to defeat Typhon, he will sink to the floor. Melinoe shines within a moment of victory standing confidently until Chronos traps her and turns back the clock, reviving Typhon to a near death state. Chronos places his scythe down, trapping Melinoe and de-aging her back into a child. She grows furious and swears that once she gets rid of Typhon, she is coming after Chronos next.

Chronos mocks her, calling her nothing but a "pathetic child", and asks her to remember that if she manages to get past through the hell that is about to be unleashed on her by Typhon. Typhon returns and laughs at Melinoe using all of his strength to vanquish her. Depending on how skilled the player is, they may once again triumph through these sections or fail. Melinoe will have to stay in a golden ring, avoiding Chronos and Typhons onslaught of attacks until she breaks free from the spell and ages back to her normal self. Chronos mocks her throughout this phase. Once she breaks free from the spell, Chronos is knocked back by it and falls to his knees, vanishing. Melinoe takes down an empowered typhon, and he swears revenge on Chronos as he falls down to the bottom of the mountain to begin his climb once more.

Downfall/Incantation[]

After Typhon fell at the hands of Melinoe she finally crossed the eye of the storm and saw an aether wall. She proceeded to break through the wall and arrived at the palace of Zeus and Hera, almost shedding tears as she saw daybreak for the first time. She took a moment to pause and collect herself with the scenery before speaking to Apollo, who was delighted to see her in person and told her that the king and queen of olympus were waiting to see her. She had a brief discussion for plans on how to befell typhon before she contacted Hecate by boon in order to send her home, promising to speak to the olympians again when she defeats typhon once more.

Several attempts in and she reports the same outcome, though she does mention that they are closer to finding a solution because Typhon and Chronos are connected together in some way. However, Melinoe finally reunites with her grandmother Demeter and gets the chance to see her in person before returning to the crossroads.
