The UMA, short for Unidentified Mysterious Animals, are the main antagonistic beings in the manga/anime Undead Unluck. They are the embodiments of the various "rules" created by God for the sole purpose of making humanity suffer.
Since each UMA embodies a different rule, they are extremely diverse and have very different goals, personalities and powers.
Biology[]
While UMA vary greatly in biology, there are a few commonalities.
Each UMA is created alongside their rule; when they are created, the world is altered around them to make it appear as if that rule has always existed. Rules can be anything from natural phenomena such as the four seasons, actions such as moving or stopping, objects such as clothing or gold, or concepts like language or decay. This is shown when Galaxy is created, and history and culture is instantly rewritten to accommodate for the existence of other celestial bodies besides Earth, the Sun and the moon. The alien species Acks was created alongside Galaxy, but nevertheless appear to have millions of years of culture and history. While most humans have their memories altered to fit the retroactive change, those with Negator abilities do not.
Each UMA's body is formed around a core, which appears as a football-sized sphere with the UMA's face on it. Destroying this core is the only way to kill an UMA, at which point their rule is removed from history through a similar process as their creation. Once again, only Negators retain any memory of the rule's existence. Through various methods, UMA are capable of ascending into a new, more powerful form called Phase 2. Phase 2 UMA are more powerful and frequently appear more humanoid. Certain UMA can ascend further into Phase 3, granting even more power. Entering a new Phase is not permanent and can be reverted at will or through excessive damage. Certain UMA are also capable of creating smaller entities called Juniors, sometimes spawning them from themselves and sometimes transforming unwilling humans. These Juniors often serve as the UMA's underlings, aiding them in battle and helping them ascend to Phase 2 or 3.
Each loop, a set number of UMA are selected as Master Rules for that loop. Master Rules retain their rules even after death. The ten first Master Rules are known as the Ten Superior Rules, and have persisted through every loop. They appear to be in Phase 2 by default.
Behavior[]
UMA have drastically different behavior, often based on the rule they embody. Common for all of them is that they are loyal to God, though even this loyalty can sometimes be overwritten by the UMA's own desires. UMA can even be tamed or befriended, with Move serving the Union dutifully. While most UMA are malevolent and seek to harm humans as per God's desires, some such as Spring seek to befriend or live alongside them.
In order to facilitate conflict between Negators and UMA, the Artifact Apocalypse offers periodic Quests that often involve capturing or neutralizing UMA. The penalty for failing to complete a set of Quests is often the addition of a new rule and thus a new UMA. Most Quests have a limit on the number of participants.
The Ten Superior Rules reside in the Master Room contained within the Sun, seated around a table mirroring the Round Table of the Union.
According to Spoil, Concept-Type UMA look down on Phenomenon-Types.
