~ Dr. Heinemann |
Dr. Udo Heinemann is a minor antagonist in the manga and anime series Monster. He was the Director of Eisler Memorial Hospital and father of Eva Heinemann who was using Kenzo Tenma's amazing medical skills to rise profits and increase the popularity of his hospital in the international community.
He was voiced by Masahiko Tanaka in the Japanese version, and by Steve Kramer in the English dubbed.
Biography[]
Udo was the Director of Eisler Memorial Hospital when Dr. Kenzo Tenma joined the hospital, and the father of his fiancee Eva. Tenma was impressed by a paper he believed Udo had written, and so he dropped everything to come to Germany and work under him. Tenma eventually realized that the paper that he was so impressed by was written by someone else whom Udo was using at the time. Dr. Heinemann was engaged in corrupt dealings to advance his career, and was frequently seen using his position to take credit for the great work of his underlings such as Kenzo.
When Kenzo was about to save the life of a Turkish building worker, Dr. Heinemann ordered him to leave the worker to fix an "emergency" surgery on a famous opera singer's cerebral aneurysm, thus causing the builder's death. When Kenzo confronted Udo about this, Udo told him that, to him, medical knowledge and funding to the hospital were far more important than the lives of regular people.
Later, when the parents of 9 year old twins Anna and Johan Liebert were murdered and Johan shot in the head, Udo ordered Kenzo to abandon his surgery on Johan and let the boy die, because the mayor of Dusseldorf had just had a brain aneurysm that also required immediate surgery, and the mayor was about to make a large donation to the hospital.
When Kenzo refused to leave the boy (who had been admitted first), the mayor died, outraging Udo, who then demoted Kenzo from his position as chief neurosurgeon. He then told Kenzo that he would utterly destroy Kenzo's career, and that Kenzo would never be able to get a senior position again, and he would not be allowed to submit any research papers to any mainstream journals. He then gloated to Tenma that any chance he had of becoming a great doctor was now closed to him. He also instructed his daughter Eva to cut off her engagement with Tenma.
It is revealed that he was involved in corrupt dealings with other hospitals so they would vote for him to become chairman of the board. He also learned that the huge amount of media attention that Johan and Anna were getting was bringing in lots of donations to the hospital, and ordered his subordinates to take a photo of the children together for media publicity. When he found out that Kenzo was Johan's doctor and would stand in the way of this, he fired him from that position, and Dr. Boyer was put in charge of Johan instead. He brought Anna to Johan's room as requested, which caused Anna to scream and run away, while Johan reached out toward her with tears in his eyes.
Outraged that Udo had ordered this, Kenzo reprimanded the doctors he had sent, only then to be told that he was no longer Johan's doctor. Johan overheard the devastated Kenzo saying that Udo would be better off dead.
He was also seen stealing sweets that Johan had been sent as a recovery present/condolences for his loss. Udo was unaware that Johan had in fact poisoned the sweets, and later that night he succumbed to the poison. His body was found by Eva as she thought he was "sleeping", but in shock she found out he died.
Later his funeral was held, were Eva broke into tears, and later developed depression, Kenzo would later become promoted to chief of surgery.
Trivia[]
- He’s rather similar to Shou Tucker as he’s a minor villain who’s unconnected to the main threat and is killed fairly quickly, but is easily one of the most hated characters due to his corruption, disregard for his patients, and cruel treatment of Tenma.
