~ Ulises's last words as he strangles Zoa moments before Ibón drowns him. |
Ulises Gracia is one of the three secondary antagonists (alongside Alma and Som Sisuk) of the Netflix series Welcome To Eden.
He is the cold and unforgiving head of Security at the Eden foundation who goes at great lengths to get what he wants.
He is portrayed by Alex Pastrana, who also portrayed Raúl in Elite.
Biography[]
Ulises first appears during the Eden festival when a handful of newcomers join an exclusive party in which they were invited, among them, Zoa, her best friend Judith, Aldo, Charly, Ibón and África while inspecting all of them with metal detectors before they proceed to enjoy themselves. Later at nightfall, his and the other members' true nature is revealed after Fran, a bartender who highly disagrees with the island's procedures refuses to give a bottle to a customer, prompting Ulises to chat privately with him inside a tent and beat him up for disobedience, with Alma watching emotionless. However, they are interrupted by a shocked Judith, who witnesses the act. When they notice, she apologizes and leaves. Alma tips Brenda off and orders her to take care of her.
The following morning, Zoa, Aldo, Charly, Ibón and África were left behind by the boat that was supposed to take them back home due to them passing out after drinking from the Eden bottle. Its leader, Astrid, invited them to stay. Ulises then directed the newcomers to their respective modules, with Zoa getting paired with Nico and Claudia, Ibón with Alma and Claudia and Aldo with Bel. However, Aldo grew highly suspicious about Eden's intentions and tries to explore the island. Even when Ulises let them know that the boat would arrive at noon to pick them up, Aldo tested Ulises' honesty by requesting to make a call to his secretary and he told him that there is no phone service, so Aldo asked him how did he know about the boat. Ulises said they had different ways to communicate with the external crew, which Aldo still doesn't buy and accuses him of lying to them, only for his warnings to be dismissed by the rest of the group, who were all thrilled that they would be coming home.
During the farewell party, Aldo puts in motion his escape plan, swimming into the sea and reaching a nearby boat, where Aldo ended up spending the night in, but it turned out to be a trap as Brenda shows up and shoots him dead, killing him. After noticing he is nowhere to be seen, Zoa reported this to Ulises, but he reacts indifferently. Zoa remains unconvinced about the island as they started a "search party" to retrieve Aldo. At an evaluation with Charly, who shared the fact that he lost his little sister in a swimming accident, Zoa called Astrid and the rest of Eden members over their hyprocrisy and demanded to know where Aldo was. Erick assured Zoa that he was safe but she called him a liar. Nico follows Zoa and tells her to meet him at night while no one is watching. He takes her to an underground cave, where she is devastated to realize that Judith has been killed by Brenda and Orson for witnessing Fran's torture.
It is later revealed that Astrid ordered Nico to show the corpse to Zoa in an attempt to scare her into submission, but it didn't come as expected, only causing her to make more questions. As Zoa spent the entire morning in her module, everyone thought she was sick and Ulises decided to run some tests on her, when Ulises took the opportunity to intimidate Zoa into revealing what she knows about Judith but she stays quiet and purposely cuts herself with a screwdiver. During a storm, everyone is gathered at Module 1 for their safety. After Ulises tells Astrid that he thinks Zoa isn't worth it, she instructs him to bring Zoa to her. Astrid and Erick then reprimand Zoa for not taking the chances she was offered, blaming her for indirectly causing Judith's death because of her breaching the contract she signed by showing her the footage of her protesting that Judith be allowed to attend the festival, saying that if Judith didn't attend, Zoa wouldn't either. Brenda attempts to kill Zoa, but ultimately spares her after pleading for another chance and falsely telling them that she heard the term "link" (a person supposed to keep newcomers in the island) from Aldo. Ulises and Nico then argue because of the latter's incompetence to handle Zoa and let him know that he had competition with Bel, who had asked permission to become Zoa's link, as she is suspicious of her behaviour.
Ulises confronts Ibón for sneaking out of Module 1, having ran off to the edge of a cliff and witnessed Judith's dead body floating into the sea, finally realizing that Eden is a cult and Zoa was telling the truth. Ulises demanded to know why Ibón escaped, at which point he called Ulises out for what he and the others did to Judith, escalating into a heated fight that Eloy, a deaf member, tries to break up only for him to have his nose broken by a furious Ulises. Zoa then intervened and got Ibón to back off and assured Ulises that he was only having a mental breakdown. Meanwhile, to prove herself, África suggests throwing a party to celebrate the anniversary of founding Eden. She constantly bossed Ulises around, which completely annoyed him. The party abruptly ends when the screen changed to Muerte a Astrid ("Death to Astrid") as someone hacked into Mayka's laptop. Infuriated, Astrid called for a meeting with the Eden council consisting of Erick, Ulises, Brenda, Orson, Mayka and Saúl. Since the culprit was unable to be traced, Astrid nevertheless demands that someone else take the fall, not ever caring if they were innocent or guilty, in order to show the community that they are consequences for breaking the rules. Ulises and Brenda suggested Eloy and Zoa as potential scapegoats; Orson is quick to shoot him down while Zoa is spared from punishment through a vote, with Ulises, Orson and Brenda agreeing that Zoa should be executed while Astrid, Erick, Mayka and Saúl opposed this. They decide to choose Claudia as the scapegoat as Alma earlier reported her to Astrid when she noticed Claudia talking to Zoa about Fran. Claudia is then murdered by Orson and Brenda after falsely claiming that she hacked the video.
Zoa, África, Charly and Ibón walk through burning coal and get a necklace as a signification of them joining Eden. Eva and Alma are promoted to Level 2 as new members of the council and Ulises to Level 3. The council members then started coordinating the upcoming Eden festival. Ulises tells Astrid that he talked to his team and they have reinforced the surveillance on the key spots. He also has Zoa, Charly and Ibón work as well in the festival, which frustrates both Zoa and Charly because with a lot of people on sight it will be difficult for them to get on the boat unnoticed. As Zoa begins to lose hope, however, Bel reassures her. Since Zoa stole a buggy while going to the beach to blow off steam, Ulises informed Brenda about this, believing that she was trying to escape and she set out to kill Zoa, only to find her making out with Bel. África, on the other hand, is barred from participating due to her celebrity status. The day of the festival arrives and Ulises is seen with Ibón taking care of the security, which was requested by Alma as she thought that Ibón, who was originally assigned to check the sound with Orson, should be give more prominence now that he has been ascended, but it's also clear that she started falling in love with him and wishes he could be ascended to Level 2 so they can finally be together. While everyone is having fun and the others working, Bel puts into motion the escape plan; her, Eloy and Eva make a diversion by sabotaging the sound, temporarily buying some time for Zoa and Charly to get into the boat, mere mintues before Alma and Mayka fix the mess. While Charly manages to get on the boat and is not ratted out by Mayka through her drone, Zoa is caught by Ulises, who violently attacks her, accussing her of causing the trouble and of supposedly stealing his pass card, which had earlier been stolen by an unknown masked figure who attempted to kill both Astrid and Erick. Zoa tries to fight back but Ulises overpowers her, threatening to kill her and have her join Judith in death and yelling out how hard he's been working to get where he is. Ulises then starts strangling Zoa, almost to death until she is saved at the last minute by Ibón, who manages to subdue Ulises by hitting him on the head with a rock and proceeds to drown him until he stops breathing, finally killing him, much to his and Zoa's horror. Eloy shows up and instructs Zoa to get into the boat and save herself while he hides Ulises' corpse into the sea, leaving Ibón behind who will likely be traumatized over what he had just done.

Trivia[]
- Because of his violent actions and how he nearly killed Zoa, Ulises became one of the most hated characters in the show alongside his colleagues Brenda and Alma.
- Although he isn't the overall main antagonist of the series, in Season 1 he served as the Heavy for Zoa and the newcomers because he is the Head of Security and does whatever it takes to keep them on the island, even if it means committing petty acts out of pure malice.
- Ulises' malicious actions against the main characters and subsequent death are all the cause of the events of the second season, enough to make him the show's secondary antagonist as it makes especially a major impact on Ibón, the one behind his murder.
