Ulla (surname or real name unknown) is the secondary antagonist of the giallo film Death Steps in the Dark. Ulla is a bisexual nightclub singer interested in blackmailing the movie's central killer, Ida Tuclidis, about the movie's first murder, which makes Ulla a target.
She's portrayed by Susy Jennings.
Biography[]
Ulla is an international celebrity who arrives at Athens, Greece, for a museum sponsorship in exchange for a bust sculpted to resemble her. She has several sexual dalliances throughout the film, with a steady girlfriend and two other lovers, Raul and the museum's curator, Theodorus Dedopoulos. Ulla is also knowledgeable of criminal underworlds circulating through the city, having met Ida Tuclidis when she partook in drug trafficking for a more exciting lifestyle, a ring Dedopoulos was a part of. Ulla attended the same train ride as Ida when she killed an accomplice, Annie Farrow, who was near turning Ida in to the police. Ulla and Raul collected gloves Ida discarded on the train, which was when she cut wires in the fuse box so the lights were out when the train went into a tunnel. When they also saw the suspects in the newspaper, they instantly knew Ida was the killer.
Raul sent Ida an extortion demand in exchange for the evidence. Ulla wanted double, but Raul was playing it safe. When Raul was killed, Ulla continued the blackmail with her desired price. the prime suspect, Luciano Morelli, demanded answers from her at the nightclub she was performing at, and she agreed for the next day. Ida ended up responding by breaking into Ulla's apartment while she was with her girlfriend. Ulla's girlfriend was drowned in the water tanks on the rooftop before he throat was slit. When Ulla's bath water filled with blood, she ran, only for Ida to throw Ulla to the ground and trap her neck in the door. Ida then pulled her straight razor out and eviscerated Ulla alive. Dedopoulos was later killed to get the glove back, which almost got Morelli caught when he got Ulla's bust for his plan to catch Ida. Morelli's girlfriend, Swedish model Ingrid Stelmosson, was the centerpiece for a fashion show with all the suspects. A young safe cracker the couple hired to get the bust wore a latex mask of Ulla's face designed from the bust, offering cigarettes from a tray. The only one who screamed in horror from seeing the "ghost" in the ploy was Ida. She ran out, hallucinated all her victims chasing her, and fell off an unconstructed building to her death on the rubble below. The inspector elaborated her motives, and Morelli was cleared.
