Ultima is the main antagonist of the 2023 action role-playing high fantasy video game Final Fantasy XVI. He is a divine entity that is responsible for instigating the conflicts between the various nations across Valisthea. He sought out to recreate the world by using the Mothercrystals and a human vessel he dubbed as "Mythos", in order to enact his plan. As such, he is Clive's main archenemy.
He was voiced by Mitsuru Miyamoto in Japanese and Harry Lloyd (who also played Viserys Targaryen in Game of Thrones, Viktor in Arcane: League of Legends, and Z in Xenoblade Chronicles 3) in English.
Personality[]
Ultima initially came off as an entirely mysterious being, with motivations unclear, beyond his desire of wanting Clive as his vessel. Throughout every encounter he has with Clive, he vaguely informs him his role as Mythos and that he is to accept his purpose as his vessel. During this, he inflicts mental pain and suffering upon him without showing any concern of his wellbeing.
As the events progress further, Ultima reveals himself to be a narcissistic tyrant, who desires to bring death upon the world and recreate it. He harbours no form of attachments to his creations of any sort and instead views himself to be a god above all others. As such, he is more than willing to toy and manipulate them into various conflicts amongst each other and dispose of them once they have served their purpose for him.
His arrogance and egotism led him to not consider the possibility of humanity developing their own free wills to live, something that he strongly detests, as he believes humanity to be nothing more than his pawns that are to worship their "god" and do everything that he commands. He also detests humanity for their abuse of magic and desire for power since it causes the Blight to occur more frequently. Ironically enough, however, these are the very same flaws present within himself, as he caused the destruction of his world for the very same reasons.
Throughout the events of the story, Ultima refers to himself in plural forms, using terms such as "we". He does briefly refer to himself as "I", however, when he speaks with Clive and Joshua about his origin. Later, when he absorbs his offshoots in his final battle with Clive, he begins to address himself more in singular form. He initially acts in a calm, composed manner, unaffected by everything that occurred around him. However, as Clive manages to prove his worth that he can match against Ultima's might, Ultima himself begins to lose his composure and express great frustration at how he could be bested by his own creation.
Because of this change in behavior, Clive believes that Ultima's desire to destroy everything is truly in response to his fears of being surpassed by his very own creations. Likewise, Ultima in his final moments congratulates Clive on his victory and hopes for him and the rest of his people to enjoy the remaining days of their lives, as he believes their world to already be dead and that Clive has simply delayed the inevitable of their demise.
History[]
Background[]
Ultima and his kin were a species of beings that shared a singular consciousness. Ruled over by their king, Ultimalius, they were a supremely powerful and intelligent race that invented magic, a practice which involved drawing upon aether to manipulate reality itself. Thanks to the boon of magic, they grew into a highly advanced and sophisticated civilization and all life flourished.
However, drawing strength from the planet came with a cost, as a phenomena later called the Blight began to spread throughout their lands and stagnated all life it came into contact with. Ultima and his kin tried to halt the Blight, but even their nigh-omnipotence was unable to curb the threat. In the end, the few remaining sixteen survivors, including Ultimalius, were forced to flee the husk of their homeland upon a ship called the Origin. They sought to find a land unspoiled by the Blight, but the journey forced them to discard their physical forms, becoming spiritual beings.
Ultima and his kin eventually reached a fertile land comprised of two continents which would eventually be called Valisthea. With their and their aether-manipulating magicks however, the Blight began to encroach on Valisthea as well. Ultima saw that the only way to truly be free of the Blight was to perform a magical feat of unmatched proportion: use "Raise," a magic spell that would allow him to revive his fallen race and remake the world in one fell swoop. He knew that performing such a feat would require an enormous amount of magical energy and a body suited to wielding said energy.
Ultima and his kin proceeded to create a set of eight Mothercrystals, gargantuan magical crystals that each housed one of the sixteen Ultimas in their cores, which would absorb and store the aether from the surrounding land. Dotted around the land of Valisthea, the Mothercrystals began to accrue the magical energy needed for Raise. At the same time, Ultima created humanity, a species of short-lived beings made in his own image. The hope was that a human, dubbed "Mythos", would eventually be born with the constitution to wield the energy needed for Raise.
The others would preserve themselves within the Nexus of Origin, transforming themselves into the form of Ifrit. He would also create the Eikons themselves, in hopes of awakening his vessel, Mythos, who he would use to destroy all of humanity and Valisthea as a whole. Ultima then entered in hibernation in preparation for his vessel, but during this time, humanity was able to develop and live on their own, instigating conflicts among one another, causing the Blight to occur more frequently.
Final Fantasy XVI[]
After many years, Ultima eventually awakened from his slumber. He came across Barnabas Tharmr, who was a fanatic worshipper devoted to his cause, and discovered his vessel in the form of a man known as Clive Rosfield, the Dominant of Ifrit. Ultima then sought out another pawn in the form of a human child known as Olivier Lesage, the son of Sylvestre Lesage and Anabella Lesage, and indirectly manipulate the Holy Empire of Sanbreque through his puppet.
Ultima eventually makes his presence known to Clive when he, along with his companions, attempted to destroy the Mothercrystals at Drake's Head. In doing so, this spawned one of his offshoots, which summoned Typhon and took possession of it, which he used it to battle against Clive and attempted to take his body. However, before he could successfully do so, Joshua managed to intervene and use the powers of the Phoenix to seal Ultima away in his body.
Powers & Abilities[]
Powers[]
- Elemental Magic: A majority of magic spells, especially the magic wielded by humans, used one of eight fundamental magical elements in their casting. The elements were dark, earth, fire, ice, light, thunder, water, and wind. Ultima was a master at using all of the magical elements. It was he who laid the seeds for the emergence of the Eikons, eight magical beasts of supreme power each tied to one of the eight magical elements, by imbuing a single element into the primordial tribes that resided adjacent to each of the eight Mothercrystals.
- Darkness Magic: Which Ultima imbued in the creation of the Eikon of Darkness Odin, allowed the creator of humanity to conjure and manipulate the otherworldly power of darkness. Dark magic could be used to construct blades out of pure darkness which were capable of tearing through reality itself with their slashes.
- Earth Magic:
- Lightning Magic:
- Fire Magic:
- Ice Magic:
- Light Magic:
- Water Magic: Though Ultima never demonstrated it, he was presumably able to use magic to conjure and manipulate water, as a portion of his being was used to create the Eikon of Water Leviathan. Unlike the other Eikons however, Leviathan no longer existed by the birth of Mythos, being described as "Leviathan the Lost," and its power was never absorbed by Rosfield.
- Wind Magic:
- Energy Projection:
- Barrier Creation: Ultima could use magic to create energy bubbles out of aether that were capable of protecting him against both physical and magical attacks. A single offshoot of his was able to conjure barriers powerful enough to resist a combined attack from three Eikons.
- Illusion Manipulation: Ultima is the master of illusions he can trap those under his influence into dreams of his making. These Illusions are so strong that the the one who is experiencing them think they are indistinguishable from reality.
- Flight:
- Telepathy:
- Mind Control:
- Teleportation: Ultima was able to teleport, meaning he could instantaneously move from one location to another without having to interact with the space between those two spots. He did so by opening rifts in space that connected two spaces, and then moving through said portals. He could transport others using his portals and could even travel between different dimensions at will.
- Shapeshifting:
Quotes[]
“ | Consciousness... We see now. Human will is so insubstantial, it cannot exist in isolation. You mitigate its weakness by interweaving it with your consciousness. We believed we had merely to purge you of your will to claim our vessel. It appears we first have to sever every thread of the consciousness that supports it. No matter. The time to build a new world is not yet upon us. We will contemplate... | „ |
~ Ultima recognizing the obstacle of Rosfield’s will. |
“ | What latent force feeds these flames? I sense... more here than mere will. Is this Logos? Have you truly become... free? No... I forbid it! You are not a god. You are but flesh and bone. You are not one of us! I created you. All of you. And what is mine, is mine to destroy. | „ |
~ Ultima realizing that Clive was truly free of his influence. |
“ | Have you learned nothing!? Damned is the slave who would turn the scourge upon his master. | „ |
~ Ultima enraged at Clive's determination. |
“ | No! Mine is the altar at which you pray! Mine are the eyes that look down upon you all! | „ |
~ Ultimalius asserting his relationship with humanity. |

Trivia[]
- "Ultima" is a Latin word which translates into English as "the last." In previous entries of the Final Fantasy franchise, the word has been used as the name of a variety of concepts. The most recurring usages of the name have been its designation as the name of the most powerful spell available in a number of games and its designation as the name of a summonable female entity associated with (superficial) holiness. That female namesake is also the final boss of Final Fantasy Tactics.
- His overall nature as a self righteous deity and the main villain makes him in par with FFXV’s Bahamut, perhaps intentionally.
- It is unclear where exactly Ultima came from, as he mentions he and his kind are not native to Valisthea, describing the journey to it to be "unprecedented". The Final Fantasy XVI Ultimania implies he is native from the same world as humans are, suggesting he comes from an unknown region in the world entirely. Yet his cosmic powers, and ability to create and travel through dimensions suggest his origins lie somewhere far beyond the world of humanity.
