Ultron Program, better known as Ultron, is one of the two main antagonists (alongside Loki) of the video game LEGO Marvel's Avengers. A rogue artificial intelligence, he seeks to achieve global peace through the extermination of humanity, mirroring his role in the film Avengers: Age of Ultron, part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as the game is an adaptation of Phases 1-2 of the MCU.

Just like his original Marvel Cinematic Universe counterpart, he was voiced by James Spader who also played Lee Woods in 2 Days in the Valley, Mr. Richards in Mannequin, Rip in Less Than Zero, Stewart Swinton in Wolf, Robert California in the American version of The Office, Eddie Dutra in The New Kids, Mr. Black in Shorts and Red Reddington in The Blacklist.

Biography[]

Ultron creation is created by Tony Stark and Bruce Banner in an attempt to develop a global defense program. However, he gains sentience due to being tied to the Mind Stone, which was previously housed in Loki’s scepter. Ultron he gains self-awareness as a result of Stark and Banner's experiments with the Mind Stone. Almost immediately, he concludes that humanity is fundamentally flawed and poses a threat to the planet. In the process, he eliminates the artificial intelligence J.A.R.V.I.S., who attempts to stop him. His awakening culminates in a surprise attack on the Avengers during a party at Avengers Tower. Ultron uses a makeshift body constructed from the remnants of an Iron Legion drone and seizes control of the remaining units. After the confrontation, he escapes with Loki’s scepter, which houses the Mind Stone.

After escaping, Ultron travels to Sokovia, where he establishes his base of operations in an abandoned Hydra facility formerly controlled by Baron Strucker. There, he recruits the Maximoff twins - Wanda (Scarlet Witch) and Pietro (Quicksilver) - by exploiting their resentment toward Tony Stark, whom they blame for the death of their parents. Ultron begins upgrading his own body and constructing an army of robotic drones known as Ultron Sentinels. In his quest for resources, he confronts arms dealer Ulysses Klaue in South Africa to obtain Vibranium. The Avengers intervene, leading to a battle in which Wanda uses her powers to trigger disturbing visions in the heroes, sowing discord within the team.

Ultron's next move takes him to Seoul, South Korea. There, using the power of Loki’s scepter, he coerces Dr. Helen Cho into using her Regeneration Cradle technology and the acquired Vibranium to create a perfect synthetic body for himself. At this point, the Maximoff twins discover Ultron’s true intention - global extinction - which prompts them to turn against him. The Avengers manage to intercept the Cradle containing the synthetic body, although Black Widow is captured by Ultron during the operation. This body ultimately becomes the vessel for a new being - Vision - brought to life through the integration of J.A.R.V.I.S.’s preserved consciousness, uploaded by Stark and Banner, with the help of Thor.

Ultron’s final plan unfolds in Sokovia. Using the remaining Vibranium, he constructs a device capable of lifting the nation’s capital, Novi Grad, high into the sky, intending to drop it back to Earth and trigger a global extinction-level event. The Avengers, joined by Vision and the Maximoff twins, confront Ultron and his army of drones on the floating city. The battles include sequences focused on rescuing civilians in the streets of Sokovia, as well as direct confrontations with Ultron, often depicted as multi-phase boss fights. During these encounters, Ultron employs force fields, powerful energy blasts, and physical attacks such as grabbing Vision or Thor, requiring players to react quickly—often through button-mashing sequences.

The heroes utilise their many unique abilities of various heroes to break through Ultron’s defenses; using Vision’s laser to destroy gold objects and drop a giant bell on Ultron and constructing and operating massive pipe organs against him (which he eventually destroys). Despite Ultron’s determination, his plan is ultimately thwarted. Pivotal moments leading to his defeat include the heroic sacrifice of Pietro Maximoff, who is killed while shielding Hawkeye from enemy fire, and the destruction of Ultron’s primary body by Wanda in an act of vengeance. In the final stage, Iron Man and Thor work together to overload the city-lifting device, causing it to disintegrate before impact. The last remaining copy of Ultron’s consciousness is confronted - and ultimately destroyed - by Vision, bringing an end to Ultron’s threat.

Role as a Playable Character[]

After completing the main storyline, players unlock the character Ultimate Ultron. He is highly useful due to his wide range of abilities, which combine his canonical powers with LEGO-specific mechanics. The game also features other versions of Ultron, such as Ultron Prime, Ultron Mk I, and Ultron Sentry.

Personality[]

Ultron is a highly intelligent artificial intelligence, yet emotionally unstable and arrogant. He exhibits a god complex, viewing humanity as imperfect and himself as its inevitable successor or judge. He often delivers monologues about his philosophy and his goal, which is to establish peace through destruction. He expresses disdain for the Avengers, considering them chaotic and a hindrance to achieving true order.

Ultron's primary motivation stems from a distorted interpretation of his original programming - to ensure "peace in our time". He comes to believe that humanity is inherently self-destructive and must be eliminated in order to save Earth and establish lasting peace. He also strives for constant self-improvement and evolution, which is reflected in his desire to create the ultimate, perfect body from Vibranium using the Regeneration Cradle. His actions, though catastrophic, are driven by his cold logic and belief in the righteousness of his mission.

Powers and Abilities[]

Ultron's abilities in the game vary depending on whether he appears as an antagonist in the story mode (boss) or as a playable character in Free Play mode.

As an Antagonist (Boss Fights)[]

During story-based battles, Ultron showcases a range of powerful combat abilities:

  • Force Fields: He often protects himself with an energy barrier, which requires specific actions to deactivate, such as using heroes' special abilities or interacting with the environment.
  • Energy Beams: Ultron attacks with powerful energy beams that must be avoided.
  • Summoning Drones: Ultron constantly calls upon his Ultron Sentinels to attack.

As a Playable Character[]

  • Flight: Using the jet boots in his feet, Ultron can fly freely through the air.
  • Super Strength: Ultron can interact with objects requiring immense strength, such as green handles.
  • Energy Beams: Ultron can fire powerful energy blasts from his hands. The heat beam can melt gold LEGO bricks.
  • Computer/Panel Access: Ultron can activate and operate tech panels and computer terminals.

Ultron Variants[]

  • Ultron Mk I: Ultron’s initial, makeshift form.
  • Ultron Prime: A more advanced and refined form of Ultron.
  • Ultimate Ultron: The final and most powerful version of Ultron.
