Uncle is a supporting character in the 2010 action-adventure video game Red Dead Redemption and its 2018 prequel Red Dead Redemption II, and a minor antagonist in the non canon DLC Undead Nightmare.
He is a slow-witted, work-shy member of the Van der Linde gang who occasionally helps the gang with some of their easier heists.
In the original game, he is voiced by Spider Madison. In the prequel, he is voiced by James McBride, while his singing voice is provided by the late John O'Creagh.
Biography[]
Background[]
Uncle was born "sometime between the fall of '49 and the fall of Rome". He was forced to live on the streets after his parents died when he was nine and was married at least twice prior to 1899. He claims that he was known as "the one-shot kid" and once sold camping supplies in the Congo before being forced to flee after refusing to marry the daughter of a tribal chief, but it is unknown if this is true. He eventually joined Dutch van der Linde's gang but his role in it was minimal due to his being a lazy drunk who spent most of his time complaining about having terminal lumbago, only being allowed to stay around because Dutch found him entertaining. He was nicknamed "Uncle" for his age despite not being related to any of the gang members.
Red Dead Redemption 2[]
Uncle accompanies the gang when they flee first to Colter, then to Horseshoe Overlook following a failed robbery in Blackwater. After arriving at Horseshoe Overlook, Uncle, Arthur Morgan, Karen Jones, Mary-Beth Gaskill and Tilly Jackson go into Valentine for supplies, with Uncle helping Arthur to buy supplies before sharing a bottle of whiskey. Uncle returns to camp with the girls after Arthur is confronted by a man who recognises him from Blackwater.
After Leviticus Cornwall drives the gang out of Valentine for robbing one of his trains, Uncle accompanies them to Clemens Point in Lemoyne. He later gives Arthur a tip about a supposedly unguarded stagecoach heading towards Rhodes. Although dubious, Arthur, Bill Williamson and Charles Smith agree to help Uncle rob the stagecoach. While they succeed in retrieving thousands of dollars, the robbery quickly goes downhill; the stagecoach belongs to Cornwall, who has upped his security after the train robbery and the gang is chased by a small army of hired guns. The four are cornered in a barn, which their pursuers light on fire. They manage to fight their way out and split up in the woods, where Arthur and Uncle overpower and kill two of their pursuers before meeting back up with the others and helping them repel the law. The outlaws divide the money up before Uncle declares he is retired from the outlaw life.
While the gang is camped out at Shady Belle, Uncle can inform Arthur of a cattle rustling opportunity at Hill Haven Ranch. After driving off two fellow rustlers, they release the cows from their pen and the ranch owner attempts to stop them but drunkenly knocks himself out. Arthur and Uncle make their escape and sell the cattle to two horse dealers in Rhodes for $100. Uncle also helps to dynamite the wall of the Bank of Rhodes during a robbery in the DLC exclusive mission "High and Low Finance".
Uncle leaves the gang while hiding in Beaver Hollow due to Dutch's clear mental decline and the suspicious activities of Micah Bell. Several years later in 1907, he meets John Marston in Blackwater and informs him that Charles Smith is still alive and in Saint Denis. After meeting up with Charles, Uncle helps John acquire a pre-cut house for his ranch at Beecher's Hope and construct a barn for keeping sheep. After succeeding in this, John, Charles and Uncle get drunk, allowing the sadistic Skinner Brothers to abduct Uncle while the three are hungover. The Skinners torture Uncle by roasting him over a fire before John and Charles save him and kill most of the Skinners.
Uncle is later present at the marriage of John and Abigail Roberts and elects to stay at Beecher's Hope to help John while Charles leaves.
Red Dead Redemption[]
John reluctantly places Uncle in charge of the ranch after Edgar Ross takes Abigail and their son Jack hostage to force John to hunt down the surviving members of the gang. After successfully hunting down Dutch, Bill and Javier Escuella, John returns to find that the ranch has been run into the ground by Uncle's incompetence, with the house in disrepair and the livestock rustled. John berates Uncle before setting about rebuilding the ranch, with Uncle helping him to herd cattle and break in horses.
Some time later, Ross goes back on his deal not to pursue John and leads Bureau of Justice agents in a raid on Beecher's Hope. Uncle alerts John and helps him fight off Ross' men until he is shot to death by Bureau agents. John is then captured and executed by Ross' men. Both John and Uncle are buried on a ridge near Beecher's Hope.
