~ Nanase Fujikura about Under the Moon |
Under the Moon (月下, Gekka) is the main antagonist in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure one-shot Rohan at the Louvre by Hirohiko Araki. It is the painting drawn by the blackest pigment in the world by Japanese artist Nizaemon Yamamura, and his only surviving work. It is stored in the Richelieu wing, the warehouse Z-13 of the Louvre, without being moved by anyone, and this is why Rohan Kishibe got the chance to see Under the Moon.
The pigment used was discovered by Yamamura when he cut down a tree more than 1,000-years-old, which in identity is a spider-like insect that settle in the stable darkness. The insects in the pigment is one with Yamamura's hatred and activated by body heat, blown breath, or when trying to see a painting out of the darkness. It then uses the memories people have of their blood relatives to attack them.
Eventually, Yamamura's hatred and Nanase that had attached themselves to the painting were released when Rohan escaped their influence, and Rohan was reported the painting itself was incinerated after chemical analysis. However, Rohan doubts that a painting owned by the Louvre could be so easily incinerated and what happened to the painting itself afterwards is unknown.
Biography[]
Background[]
Three hundred years ago, Nizaemon Yamamura cut down a tree of a kind known only to him and discovered the blackest color in the world by chance, which he used as a pigment to paint various pictures. However, the tree he cut down was more than 1,000 years old, and because it violated the law, he executed for his violation of the law by the local lord. At the time, Yamamura had a wife, Nanase Fujikura, but she became ill because of his death and died soon after.
Subsequently, almost all of Yamamura's paintings with the world's blackest pigment were burned, but only one of them was hidden in a safe location by him and was eventually bought by the curators of the Louvre. The painting was then named Under the Moon and was preserved in the Richelieu wing, the warehouse Z-13.
Nanase Fujikura, who has come to exist as a curse of Under the Moon after her death, visits her blood relatives under the guise of being alive and tries to stop Yamamura's hatred in Under the Moon, but fails until she reaches Rohan. As a result, she kept failing until she reached Rohan, causing the death of her blood relatives for 300 years.
Her tearing Rohan's painting drawn character based on her and his renouncing his adoration for Nanase led to her and Yamamura's liberation from the painting once, but Under the Moon became active again because Rohan remembered it again 10 years later and tried to cover Under the Moon, which was supposed to be forgotten by all.
Rohan at the Louvre[]
Rohan recalled hearing about Under the Moon from Nanase Fujikura, a woman he met 10 years ago when he was 17 years old and renting a room in an inn owned by his grandmother, and headed to the Louvre, where it is said to be preserved, for covering the painting.
Emma Noguchi, a Japanese interpreter, told me about the painting and its creator, and I confirmed that it existed, but was denied access to see the painting because it is forbidden to the general public to enter the vaults. However, the painting was stored in warehouse Z-13, which should have been empty, and even Gaucher Bigotte, the head of the department of asian arts, was unaware of Nizaemon Yamamura or his work, making it necessary to confirm these anomalies. In order to verify these anomalies, Rohan was allowed to visit the area accompanied by Gaucher, Noguchi, and two firefighters.
When they arrive at the Richelieu wing, they try to open the door to see if the painting exists, but they cannot open it properly because it is rusty and has not been opened in years. One of the firefighters discovered the preserved painting through a crack in the door, and at that moment they saw something move quickly, which puzzled Gaucher and the firefighters who had been watching the painting, but they went on to destroy the lock and enter the werehouse.
One of the firefighters attempted to retrieve Under the Moon, but he was shot to his head twice and knocked to the ceiling and killed him. Following that, people around Rohan such as Gaucher, the other firefighter and Noguchi was touched by the people who are supposed to be dead one by one and died.
Rohan then realized that the painting was using the memories of his ancestors and their deaths to attack him, judging from their saying at the time of their deaths and the presence of Rohan's grandparents, and surrounded by them, Rohan wrote himself an order to "Erase all my memory" and succeeded to escape from influence of Under the Moon.
Trivia[]
- The painting's title "Under the Moon" (月下, Gekka) is probably based on the Japanese word for Epiphyllum oxypetalum also known as Queen of The Night and Dutchman's Pipe Cactus, "Gekka Bijin" (月下美人, Beautiful Woman Under the Moon).
