~ The Suburban Terror's first intelligible words |
The Suburban Terrors or Donnies are major antagonists Troodontids in the first part of the internet ARG series Weird Birds on Twitter/X by Archesuchus.
They are a species of troodontid dinosaur not yet discovered by humanity, potentially due to them not getting buried in sedimentary rock, that were brought through one of the green portals from presumably the Cretaceous Period.
Design[]
The Suburban Terrors belong to a clade of theropod dinosaurs called Paraves and thus share multiple features with modern-day birds. They are said to be about five feet tall and around ten feet long, they have bright red eyes, are covered in feathers in patterns of brown, white and brown, have long tails and numerous teeth which they use to kill their prey with the help of sharp claws.
Personality[]
Suburban Terrors are highly intelligent predatory animals. They are very aggressive and innovative hunters, being able to create very basic traps, such as attempting to lure the main character to them with trails of feathers and children's shoes. They are capable of mimicking human speech and frequently use that ability to try and lure victims to them. While the speech sounded broken at first, over time it slowly became more refined and accurate-sounding.
History[]
Backstory[]
Much of how the Suburban Terrors were transported to the present isn't known yet, however tidbits of lore in the story have revealed some information about how they and other out-of-place organisms entered the 2020s. For an unknown reason, rips in space-time have begun opening, unleashing creatures from different time periods into the world. It is noted that green portals usually bring in creatures from Earth's past, including the Troodontids, red portals bring in creatures from the "near" future of Earth, and purple portals bring in animals from the far future of Earth, a point in time where the growth of the Sun has rendered most of the Earth uninhabitable, with complex life only surviving in small salty oceans in the poles and completely changed beyond recognition. An organization known as the Wildlife and Environmental Health Organization or WEHO is also implied to be tracking down these displaced creatures and cleaning up any messes they make, presumably in an effort to contain or exterminate them.
Chicago Suburbs[]
The Suburban Terrors are first encountered by an unnamed man from Chicago, when they keep his dog up at night, prompting him to stay up for a night to see what the problem is. A Suburban Terror peeks through the window, causing the man's dog to bark and allowing him to take a photo of the creature. It flees after he does so. At some point prior to that incident, the six-year-old son of his neighbors had seen the creature and made a poorly done drawing of it, which he showed to the unnamed man. One of the Suburban Terrors is heard the next evening by the unnamed man, who records its calls when he's with his dog in his yard. One of the Suburban Terrors are able to get into his house after he leaves his door unlocked and it steals a rotisserie chicken from his basement before fleeing out the door. It is spotted later that night be the unnamed man, who photographs it and attempts to take a video of it, however it flees before he gets the chance.
A short while later, a Suburban Terror attacks and kills what is presumably the neighbor's six-year-old son, leaving his foot and shoe behind as well as regurgitating a pellet. After discovering the foot, the unnamed man goes to check on his neighbors, however they do not answer the door despite all their houselights being on, having presumably been killed by one of the Suburban Terrors. That night, the Suburban Terrors leave a trail of feathers in an unsuccessful attempt to lure him to them. Realizing this, they remove the feathers and are later heard vocalizing. They later make several unsuccessful attempts to lure the unnamed man outside by mimicking human speech. The unnamed man later discovers two Suburban Terrors watching him through the windows of his house, prompting him to hide in his basement. They try unsuccessfully to open the doors into the unnamed man's house, allowing him to escape and hide in his car.
The Appearance of the Shadowy Tyrant[]
During the night, one of the Suburban Terrors is killed by a different dinosaur known as the Shadowy Tyrant, a Zhuchengtyrannus. They are later heard again, attempting to lure the unnamed man out, mimicking the words of the six-year-old boy they killed. They then leave a trail of shoes to lure the man out but are not successful. They are then scared off by the returning Shadowy Tyrant. Three Suburban Terrors later return and break into the unnamed man's house, forcing him to flee into a nearby nature preserve. The unnamed man returns a short while later, having a close encounter with the Shadowy Tyrant which had scared the Suburban Terrors away again.
A police sketch is later found by the man, confirming that the police were aware of the animals. Later, a gunfight ends up scaring one of the Suburban Terror's into the unnamed man's ceiling. The man's befriended microraptor named Mikey, flies up into the ceiling to distract it so the man can escape. Mikey ends up fleeing from the Suburban Terror, who begins almost perfectly repeating the final words of one of it's victims. It then attempts to go through the ceiling and attack the man but get's stuck. The man flees his house for good after the Suburban Terrors give up and he isn't heard from for nearly two months.
The Wilderness[]
The unnamed man flees and has not encounters with the Suburban Terrors until he find the remains of some near a cemetery. Later, the unnamed man encounters Mikey and his flock who had fled to where he was due to the sounds of some distant Suburban Terrors which begin approaching. They find the man and attack him but are distracted by Mikey's flock as they flee into the trees, allowing him to escape. However, one of the Suburban Terrors tracked him there but is scared off by the man when he screams at it and stuns it with the flash of his phone camera.
A sudden overnight freeze later kills many of the prehistoric creatures including Mikey, but the Suburban Terrors survive because of their feathers. One of the Suburban Terrors manages to the unnamed man close to it by mimicking a crying baby, but the man is expecting it. They get into a fight and the man attempts to kill the Suburban Terror with a rock. After a long and violent fight, the Suburban Terror is badly injured but manages to seriously injure the unnamed man. It is scared off by a pack of stray dogs, including the unnamed man's own dog who he had sent to live with his grandmother after the encounters with the creatures at his house. The pack of stray dogs presumably hunt down and kill the Suburban Terror and the unnamed man succumbs to his wounds.
Powers and Abilities[]
- Sharp teeth and Claws: The main weapons of the Suburban Terrors which are used to kill their prey.
- Heightened Sense of Smell: The Suburban Terrors possess a strong sense of smell as they're able to sniff out the unnamed man while he's hiding in his house.
- Mimicry: The Suburban Terrors are able to almost perfectly mimic human speech after hearing it enough times.
Weaknesses[]
- Bright Lights: Suburban Terrors are often spooked and disoriented by bright light.
- Able to Be Outsmarted: While intelligent, Suburban Terror's are less intelligent then humans and thus their traps are not convincing and their earlier mimicry of human voices is very obviously not human.
- Hollow Bones: Being Troodontids, Suburban Terrors have hollow bones which are easier to break.

Trivia[]
- The Suburban Terror is the first creature seen in the Weird Birds series.
- The Suburban Terror appears the most of any creature in the series so far.
- Fans originally thought the creature was supposed to be a species of dromaeosaur called a Deinonychus but the creator Archesuchus confirmed it was an undiscovered species of troodontid.
- Several posts in the second part of the series heavily imply that Weird Birds takes place in a near-identical but alternate world to ours where the Jurassic Park franchise was never made, explaining why people in the modern age seem to have little knowledge of what dinosaurs actually are. One post even implies that the outdated image of dinosaurs having upright postures with their tails dragging on the ground was never disproven even up until 2023, or at least not popularized in entertainment media.
- Weird Birds is considered to be a modern take of Dinosaurs in the horror genre.[1]
