The Unicorns are the titular secondary antagonists of the 2025 dark fantasy horror comedy film Death of a Unicorn.
They are an extremely rare race of mystical equine-like creatures that have been chronicled since at least the Middle Ages, but over time faded into myths and legends as their numbers dwindled and the remaining specimens retreated into isolation. One mated pair eventually came to live in mountain caves in the Leopold Wilderness Reserve and had at least one foal prior to the events of the film.
Biography[]
Past[]
Unicorns are mythical creatures that can only be tamed by beautiful maidens with pure hearts. Taking advantages of it, rulers and nobles abused their power in their quest for eternal life and caused the unicorns to retaliate brutally. Eventually, the tapestry was created to depict the stories of the unicorn and those who abused them met a grisly fate. During the French revolution, half of the tapestry was destroyed.
Death of a Unicorn[]
At the beginning of the film, a unicorn foal becomes separated from its parents and is hit by a car driven by the Kintners Elliot and his daughter Ridley. The foal is subsequently killed, abducted, taken to the Odell estate and killed again (when it self-resurrects) and subjected to gruesome experimentation by the Leopolds, who seek to exploit its healing properties for monetary gain and eternal life.
When the foal fails to return, the adult unicorns venture out in search of it. As night falls, the female hangs back while the male infiltrates the estate and kills Dr. Song and several other men. In the confusion, the male happens upon Ridley and is rendered tame by her beauty and pure heart and proffers her its glowing horn to initiate a bond with her. Before this can happen however, the estate security drive the male back into the forest with gunfire.
Regrouping with the female, the unicorns prepare to ambush the humans' hunting party and kill most of them, forcing the survivors to flee back to the estate. The unicorns pursue them and are met by Dr. Bhatia, who offers them back the body of their foal. When the unicorns notice that the foal's horn has been cut off, they immediately become hostile, eviscerate Dr. Bhatia and pursue the Leopolds and the Kintners to the house. Overcome by arrogance and greed, Odell attempts to tame the male unicorn and share in the bonding experience, but the male impales him through the head instead, killing Odell instantly. While the female goes after the Kintners, the male stalks the Leopolds through the house and disembowels Belinda when her son Shepard abandons her to die. The female, sensing the foal's horn, chases Elliot into the forest when he separates from Ridley, but he then submits to the unicorn and promises to return the horn.
Upon leaving the house, the male unicorn once more comes upon Ridley, is entranced by her and passively lies down in front of her while Shepard attempts to tie it down. When the female arrives with Elliot, it too lies down in front of Ridley while Shepard tries to bind it. His plan however fails when Elliot stabs him with the horn and Shepard fatally stabs Elliot with an arrow in retaliation. The female unicorn realizes what is happening and fatally kicks Shepard before the unicorns free themselves. Seeing Elliot weeping over her father's lifeless body, the unicorns take pity on them and use their magic to revive and heal both Elliot and their foal and restore the foal's horn. Following this, the unicorns leave peacefully and retreat back into the forest.
A short time later, the unicorns sense that the Kintners are in danger and work together to run the police car transporting the Kintners off the road in an attempt to save them.
Appearance[]
Unlike regular unicorns, these ones have pitch black greyish fur and look like a mish-mash of various animals. Although they have the basic shape and facial structure of horses, they are shown to have the heads, teeth and tails of lions and retractable claws behind their hooves while their horns look more chitanous and insect-like than keratin like a rhinoceros. They also appear to be pretty larger than normal unicorns in the film while their blood is shown to be an iridescent dark purple instead of red. However, their fur turns white after they revive Elliot and their foal, indicating that they are normal unicorns again.

Trivia[]
- According to the film's director Alex Scharfman, it is implied that the unicorns crashed the police car at the end in an attempt to rescue Ridley and Elliot.
- The scene in which one of the adult unicorns growls in Ridley's face is a reference to a Xenomorph growling in Ellen Ripley's face from Alien³.
- The unicorns are shown in the film to make noises and hunt in a similar manner to the Velociraptors from the Jurassic Park franchise. Certain shots and kills are virtually identical to scenes from the movie.
- It is implied that the unicorns became bloodthirsty demonic creatures and had their fur turned black right after their foal got killed. However, their fur turns white when they use their magic to resurrect Elliot and their foal, implying that they are normal unicorns again. If their foal hadn't been killed, then none of this wouldn't have happened.
