An unseen satanist and a serial killer, known only as an Unidentified Suspect, is a main villainous protagonist of Puppet Combo's indie horror game Riverside Incident.
Biography[]
Previous Crimes[]
Before the events of Riverside Incident, this person commits a series of other disturbing and destructive crimes, many of which are ritualistic in nature and end in arson.
Deep inside the culprit's lair, inside one of the rooms where he stores his "equipment", on the wall are displayed several newspaper articles related to his activity. The first article where the police sketch of the suspect was presented is about a quadruple homicide of Dr. James Van Houten's family. The house was ablaze, all the bodies have been dismembered in a ritualistic manner and an arm of Arnold Van Houten was never found, suggesting that the assailant took it with him. Earlier a suspicious individual was reported roaming around Van Houten's back yard. A police sketch was made according to the witness description.
Apparently, he also resorts to abducting his victims right from the crime scenes sometimes. A 1975 Ford Bronco was discovered by a transport driver. The vehicle was set on fire earlier, but the flames were extinguished by the freezing temperature and two car occupants, Marvin Delaney and his girlfriend Megan Nelson, were missing with no traces or leads. Another instance of kidnapping happened in a small rental house in northern Washington where Valdez and Caitlyn Nordstrom died in a fire while their roommate Liza Sidney was nowhere to be found, thus making her a suspect, but since this article is a part of the main antagonist's collection, it was obviously his doing.
Considering his hideout being the abandoned Riverside State hospital and his next victim being a psychiatrist from that hospital, it is presumed that he used to be a patient there. Dr. Richard Eckhardt was found dead by his maid Rhonda McKenzie. She claimed that she discovered his corpse sitting in a chair with it's head removed and replaced with a bizzare crown made out of black feathers. His documented works were destroyed as well, leading authorities to believe a culprit did it in order to dispose of some important information tied to him.
The killer is absolutely ruthless, going as far as murdering and dismembering children. Similarly to previous murders, the house of Lawson family, Darren, Patrice and their 3 children, has been infiltrated, occupants killed, their bodies mutilated, dismembered and limbs placed around the house in a ritualistic manner. Since the house was almost entirely engulfed into flames, the police first considered it to be an accident, but the fact that all the victims prior to their deaths were attacked by a large cutting weapon (most likely a machete, since it can be found in the killer's lair) made it very unlikely.
Riverside Incident[]
In July 1991, a group of hikers happened upon a garbage bag containing a video tape and some articles of clothing in Spring Forest state park. After viewing the footage, they turned it into the local police, believing it to be a prank. Limited portions of the tape have been released to the public in hopes of identifying the persons involved.
The tape starts on may 19 of 1989 at 6:24 PM. It's filming the interior of a decrepit psychiatric hospital. Nothing really stands out besides a few pentagrams and numbers 666 on the walls in one of the rooms with bathrooms nearby the cafeteria and a few working lights that are red for some reason. The footage stops and resumes at 7:15 PM. In a surgery and storage area, a tape recorder suddenly starts playing an interview between a famed psychiatrist Dr. Eckhardt and a mentally disturbed girl, that later led him to believe supernatural forces are involved in her behaviour before she committed suicide, as stated in a newspaper article about his death. A blackboard with what seems to be an instruction on how to properly dispose of a human body written in chalk can be seen on one of the blackboards. After a few minutes, the footage cuts to 7:45 PM and features a set of small rooms containing dozens of gasoline canisters and mattresses, with one of them storing other equipment such as cutting pliers, a rusted machete, a knife, matches, fuel cans and wooden boxes containing other people's stolen belongings in addition to women underwear and a shoe. Parts of several articles about a series of murders and arson can be seen taped to a wall nearby. The footage is resumed once again at 9:40 PM. The unseen radio plays a disturbingly distorted song and a circle of lit candles can be found in one of the rooms, implying a satanic ritual. Malfunction sounds can are heard before the footage jumps straight to may 20 at 11:30 PM. The killer films himself coming out of the woods to a brightly lit house. He makes his way inside the house and TV can be heard on the top floor. He comes up several staircases and as soon as he enters the room with a TV playing, the camera is dropped to the floor with blood splattered near it and horrifying screams of a woman getting murdered are heard in the background. The final episode of the footage is filmed at 11:40 PM and captures the house burning in the distance with sirens and the killer's whispers in the background.
Appearance[]
The killer is never seen during the game, but his sketch suggests that he is a white male in his late 20s with dark messy hair and a beard. If one pays close attention to the footage, they will notice that the killer filming it moves slowly and limps.
Personality[]
All the information gathered from the footage made by the killer and the newspaper articles about his previous crimes suggests a highly deranged ruthless individual obsessed with occult topics.
He is an obvious satanistic recluse who inhabits abandoned places and covers their walls in various occult writings, sometimes even performing rituals. The ritual mutilation of his victims and arson seem to be not just a precautionary measure in disposing of evidence, but also bears another important meaning for the perpetrator.
Efficiency with which he commits his atrocious deeds suggests a high level of planning and strategy, since he was seen near the house of one of his victims, most likely scouting the place and looking for the best way to infiltrate and kill the family inside. While the murder of Dr. Eckhardt seemed savage in nature, the true motive was destroying all potential clues about his identity, since it is very likely he used to be that doctor's patient and might have been affected by some paranormal forces, just like the girl Eckhardt interviewed. All kinds of tools for murder and disposal can be seen scattered around his hideout and even the instruction on a proper corpse handling is there for him to be well-prepared. It is very possible that not long after making the footage he moves his base to another location.
Although he is quite organized, a certain level of fetishism, recklessness and mischief are shown in his actions. He films his entire hideout with the latest crime and even films the aftermath while police arrives at the scene, risking getting spotted and caught. He keeps many private items of his victims as souvenirs, including the female underwear, indicating a hint of perversion. The killer is fond of abducting some victims, most likely for the rituals, and has ropes and a shovel for that scenario.
Trivia[]
- The killer's character and the final episode of the footage were inspired by the Stockton Arsonist incident. A teenage suspect who filmed himself near the burning countryside house had satanistic motives behind his crime and was admitted to a state mental hospital. In fact, the whispering of the killer in the game is the audio taken from the real Stockton Arsonist footage. The tape with the arson was also found under similar circumstances.
- The woman's scream is a real audio from a 911 call made by the elderly lady who complained about the unknown man near her house and was murdered during the call.
