That poem was not my best... thank you for the destructive criticism.

Unit, also known as Drone, is the titular main antagonist of the 2022 short film, Sonic Drone Home, a short film set within the Sonic Cinematic Universe. He is a Badnik drone that was created by Dr. Robotnik, and was programmed with self-awareness and independent thoughts.

He was voiced by Aaron Landon, who also voiced Sammy Lawrence from Bendy and the Ink Machine.

Biography[]

Unit is the first of Eggman's robots to go rogue after Robotnik was presumed to be dead, due to the collapse of his Death Egg Robot/Mecha Eggman that Super Sonic had caused. Resemblance-wise, with the exception of his upgraded form, Unit shares the same look as its other fellow non-Buzz Bomber-esque Eggman units. In his upgraded form, it had a completely wrecked car for a torso, traffic lights for lasers, a worn-out ceiling fan for a propeller, rusted metal claws for hands and various other torture devices fused into its briefly upgraded mechanism. This Unit has a special power that most of Eggman's other Units do not have, that being the ability to self-upgrade itself using any metallic object in the surrounding premises.

Appearance[]

Unit is a standard aerial drone created by Dr. Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik. As such, he resembles a metallic white egg with a red eye on the front and collapsible flaps around his body. He also has four black curves painted around his eye. In addition, unlike other Badnik models like his, he has metallic eyelids.

While in Green Hills Junkyard, Unit managed to build a body for himself, with his core module serving as its head. This body had a trashed front section of a car as its pelvis, an upper body made of various random components, and about thirteen thin mechanical arms that each wielded a different tool at their tips. However, he unusually only had four arms protruded at a time. The first of these arms was the shovel arm from an excavator, the second was a parabolic antenna on the end of its arm, the third had a traffic light for a hand, and the fourth had a two-fingered claw. His core module also had two antennae on top of it.

Personality[]

Unit appears to be hostile towards Sonic at first, intent on succeeding in his initial programming on obliterating Sonic, Tails, and the now reformed Knuckles using his upgraded form. However, inches near to fulfilling what Robotnik failed to do, Sonic managed to somehow override its initial programming by taking advantage of its self-awareness, which caused it to rethink its motives. After expressing its hidden passion for poetry by reading its personal poem towards a captive Sonic and Tails, and having its upgrades be smashed to bits by Knuckles, Unit now lives a nice, humble, pacifist life as a poet with Tails, where it will attempt to "take over the world with its poetry".

Trivia[]

  • Unit's role as a self-aware robot attempting to succeed Robotnik is similar to the role of the Lone EggRobo from Sonic 3 & Knuckles.
  • He's the only member of Dr. Robotnik's Badniks to redeem himself.
  • Despite the fact that they heard him say his name a few times, Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles didn't refer to Unit by his name. In fact, Sonic referred to him as one of Dr. Robotnik's drones when they first met him.
  • Unit's redemption arc is similar in vein to that of E-102 Gamma. They were initially mindless Eggman robots hellbent on fulfilling their initial programming created by Eggman, but underwent a change of heart, and went rogue after a bit of chat with one of the heroes (in this case, Sonic). After that, they defy their initial programming. But unlike Gamma, Unit doesn't die after its admittedly short redemption arc concluded. Instead, he lived a nice, humble life as a poet, alongside its master, Tails.
  • In regards to Unit's absence since his debut, writer Pat Casey had joked on Twitter that during the events of the Knuckles TV series, Unit traveled to Cleveland, Ohio to participate in a poetry contest, which is a plot line that was similar to the aforementioned series. After the release of Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Casey further added that he was at the Wachowski Residence watering the plants during the events of the film.
  • Even though Pat Casey confirmed that Unit was watering the Wachowskis' plants during the events of Sonic the Hedgehog 3, it's unknown if he'll make an appearance in Sonic the Hedgehog 4.
