| ~ Mr. Clown explaining the cult's goals. |
The Cult, also known as the Penitent Ones, are the main antagonists of the horror comedy web series Spooky Month.
They are an mysterious and enigmatic cult that's lead by an anonymous leader that seeks to take over as much as possible, coming into conflict with Jack and John when the two discover them. They also worship a deity known as the Eyes of the Universe.
They are all voiced by Sr. Pelo, who voices The Eyes of the Universe, Frank, and Mr. Clown in the same series.
Biography[]
Origins[]
It is never stated when or where the cult was founded, but they appear to have been around for a long time. In a book provided by Sr. Pelo's ARG, the translated texts seem to document the events leading to the foundation of the cult, in which the cult leader met an unknown entity in the woods who gifted them the Eyes, allowing the leader to begin caring for it and master its power. The book's drawings also imply that the cult may employ human sacrifice. So far, the cult seemingly has a powerful influence over the town and has a mansion on a hill as their headquarters, furnished with a door to the Eyes' domain.
Spooky Month[]
In the Newgrounds ending for "Unwanted Guest", Jack and John investigate the House on the Hill and find the cultists there. Mr. Clown tells the cops how the cult plans on taking everything, which scares Jack into shooting Clown dead. The two then escape the cult and start investigating them.
In "Deadly Smiles", John investigates the cult alongside Jack, but a cultist arrives and burns down John's house to destroy evidence.
In "Tender Treats", John tells the mayor about the cult, but he brushes it off as a hoax and sends Jon and Jack to catch Bob Velseb. Later, after killing Bob, Jack and John discover a amulet on Bob that matches an amulet worn by the cult.
In "Hollow Sorrows", Father Gregor is kidnapped by the Cultists, where they send him in to the Eyes's domain, causing him to kneel before it and start worshipping it. It's also later revealed that the Thieves were sent by the Cult to steal something from Lila's house earlier on, though they so far have failed.
Members[]
- Cult Leader - The unknown leader of this cult.
- Mr. Clown - A high ranking member and the presumed leader of the cult. He is shot by Jack after attempting to intimidate him and John.
- Skid's Father - Although not stated, there are multiple signs in the attic that Skid's father was a member of the cult before his death. This was later confirmed by the creators when he drew Bob and Mr. Clown in cult robes with an individual titled "Dad". While unconfirmed, it’s commonly believed that Skid’s Father is the leader of the cult, due to him being depicted in unique attire from the other cultists and often being shown as more prominent than the others.
- Unnamed Arsonist - A member who destroyed the evidence of the cult by burning up John’s house. However, this backfired and the arsonist ends up with their cloak ignited, with their fate left ambiguous.
- Bob Velseb - A serial killer who is in some way affiliated with the cult, having one of their amulets and John piecing together that they broke him out.
- Roy's Uncle - A pedophiliac man who molests children, including his own nephew. As he lures his victims into the House on the Hill to sexually abuse them.
- The Thieves - Two dimwitted and bumbling thieves who apparently work for the Cult under the Candy Dealer. They have apparently been tasked to steal something from Lila's house, though they have failed so far.
- Candy Dealer - An enigmatic candy seller whose body is constantly concealed by his hat and coat. He works with the Cult and is apparently the superior to the Thieves.
Possible members[]
- Lila - Skid's mother who might have joined the cult with her husband, possessing a cult robe in her attic, and presumably other things that the cult was interested enough in having the thieves break into her house to retrieve. However, even if she was a member she long since has left, with all depictions of her husband being scribbled over and the cult robe being shelved away.
- Carmen - It’s implied that Roy’s mom and his dad joined the Cult due to Carmen’s necklace gem turning white at the candy store then turning blue when she’s outside and nearer to Bob Velseb, a fellow cultist.
- Richard - Thanks to the implications of Carmen being a cultist, it’s implied that Roy’s dad is part of the cult as well.
- Mayor Evermore - He could have a connection with the Cult due the amulet carved in his office.
- Ignacio -Skid and Pump's antisocial neighbor who might be the true identity of the unnamed arsonist. This is hinted by how his name means "born from the fire" and when he appears in Spooky Month: Tender Treats, Ignacio's hands and body are bandaged as if badly burnt. Furthermore, in Hollow Sorrows, Ignacio can be seen wearing a gold chain necklace under his clothes which is likely the Cult’s own necklace. As Ignacio is seen calling an unknown party (likely Mort) after Father Gregor leaves, it’s further implied that he’s the one who tipped off the priest to the cult.
- Mort - A doctor in the town’s hospital and Patty’s superior. As he’s seen hanging up a phone call shortly after Ignacio calls an unknown individual presumably to tip off Father Gregor, it’s implied that he was the one contacted and the one who alerted the cult.
Trivia[]
- In the background, Mr. Clown is seen stalking Skid and Pump. This, added with Skid's father showing signs of being a member, implies that the cult have a secret goal involving Skid and Pump.
- It should also be noted that Mr. Clown avoided kidnapping Skid and Pump in favor of a kid behind them and that Skid and Pump were capable of understanding Clown when he wasn't speaking English.
- They worship the Eyes of the Universe, with their headquarters being directly above its domain and with Bob Velseb's eyes flashing blue as he's shot by the police, which is a common trait of those possessed or influenced by the Eyes, as shown by how Pump's eyes turn blue when he sees it for the first time, and afterwards when confronting Moloch.
- This seems to be confirmed as an official card titled “Aeternum Foedus” depicts an individual (likely Skid's father) forming a blood pact with an infant Eyes, making it possible that as the title translates to “Eternal Covenant”, the Cult is raising the Eyes for their nefarious purposes.
- It is believed that Skid’s father might’ve founded the cult in the first place, evidenced by official art depicting him in a unique attire from other cultists.
- The episode Hollow Sorrows marks the first time the Cult appears in the YouTube version of Spooky Month, having previously only appeared in the endings of the Newgrounds edition.
