Wow! Time really does fly!
~ The disaster demon's catchphrase before crashing a plane.
I know what happened to your girlfriend! She must have died screaming. Even now, she's burning!
~ The disaster demon taunting Sam.

The Disaster Demon is the main antagonist of the Supernatural episode "Phantom Traveler".

It’s a demon specializing in causing death by possessing people and causing them to initiate plane crashes, making sure to leave no survivors. When the crash of Flight 2485 leaves several survivors, the disaster demon goes to extreme lengths to crash the planes that the survivors board in the future to ensure no survivors.

Appearance[]

It looks like the people it possesses. In it’s true form it looks like a formless black cloud.

Biography[]

Not much is known about its past, but like all other demons it was once a human who ended in Hell when it died. There it was tortured until it lost all of its humanity and became a demon. When it became a demon it started specializing in causing plane crashes by possessing people and making them crash the plane. For at least a decade prior to the episode it had successfully made planes crash without any survivors.

In the beginning of the episode it possesses a dentist named George who is afraid of flying. It does it as a black cloud going into his eyes. As George enters the plane the stewardess notices that his eyes are all black but doesn’t do anything about it as the other passengers keep boarding the plane. After 40 minutes of flying George asks the woman sitting next to him how long they had been up, she answers “about 40 minutes”. He then gets up from his seat and walks to the back of the plane. Another passenger notices it, as he starts opening the emergency exit. He shouts out but it makes no difference as he gets the door open and is sucked out of the plane. There was panic in the plane which crashed but there were 7 survivors.

Next time we see the demon is at a small airport where the surviving pilot Chuck from the crash is about to go up in a small plane with a friend in order not to become afraid of flying again. Chuck looks very nervous and we see a black cloud go into his eye the same way as it did with George. After 40 minutes of flying Chuck asks his friend how long they have been up. After the friend answers 40 minutes Chuck crashes the plane.

The last time we see the demon is when Sam and Dean find out that it has possessed the co-pilot on a plane where the stewardess from the first plane is on. As Sam and Dean try to subdue the co-pilot by exercising the demon from him. After a fight where the demon tries to torment Sam by telling him that it knows about his girlfriend Jessica and how she is still on fire in Hell Sam and Dean are successful in the exorcism and the demon is forced out of the co-pilot's body. It looks like the black cloud again and vanishes into the plane's ventilation. The plane starts to dive and the passengers panic. Luckily Sam manages to finish the exorcism and the demon is sent back to Hell permanently.

Personality[]

Like all other demons all it wants is death and destruction for its own sake. It also appears to be somewhat of perfectionist as each time someone survives a plane crash it causes, it will go to great lengths to make sure they die. It might also have a love for symbolisme as it only makes the plane crash after 40 minutes which is a bible number meaning death. It seems that it also enjoys psychological torment since it brings Jessica's death up to Sam as a way to torment him.

Powers and Abilities[]

It has all the standard powers of a regular demon.

  • Special demonic possession - in contrast to other demons it possesses people through their eyes instead of their mouth.
  • Immortality - as a demon it’s immortal. It doesn’t age, it is immune to all diseases and toxins, it doesn’t require food or oxygen.
  • Super Strength - it’s extremely strong since it could open the emergency door on the plane.
  • Telepathy (probably) - it probably has telepathic abilities because it was aware of Jessica’s death. Dean surgets that it knew it by reading Sam’s mind even though it was never confirmed.

Trivia[]

  • It is the first demon to appear in the series (aside from Azazel in silhouette).
