Sir, there's a little girl. But... Yes, sir.
~ The Soldier hesitating to pull the trigger.

The Unnamed Soldier is one of the overarching antagonists in The Last of Us franchise. He is the one responsible for fatally shooting and killing Joel Miller's biological daughter Sarah during the early outbreak.

In both the video game and HBO series, he was portrayed by uncredited actors.

Biography[]

He appears briefly in the prologue, stationed on the outskirts of Austin, Texas, as part of the Military’s emergency response. When Joel, Sarah, and Tommy flee their home to escape the infection, they encounter this soldier while trying to find safety. Upon spotting them, the soldier radios for instructions. Despite seeing that Joel is carrying an injured child, he is ordered to open fire. He pauses and questions the command, saying, “Sir, there’s a little girl,” but ultimately obeys. He shoots, injuring Joel and fatally wounding Sarah. Before he can finish the job, Tommy arrives and kills him.

Trivia[]

  • It remains unclear why neither actor who portrayed the soldier responsible for Sarah’s death has been officially credited. The most likely explanation is that the character, while pivotal to the story’s emotional foundation, is ultimately considered minor within the broader narrative—serving more as a symbol than a fully developed individual. Some have speculated that the lack of credit might also serve to protect the actors from potential harassment.
