“ | A eunuch who is cut young will never have the brute strength of one of your Westerosi knights, this is true. A bull is strong as well, but bulls die every day in the fighting pits. A girl of nine killed one not three days past in Jothiel's Pit. The Unsullied have something better than strength, tell her. They have discipline. We fight in the fashion of the Old Empire, yes. They are the lockstep legions of Old Ghis come again, absolutely obedient, absolutely loyal, and utterly without fear. | „ |

“ | This beggar queen must understand, such wonders do not come cheaply. In Yunkai and Meereen, slave swordsmen can be had for less than the price of their swords, but Unsullied are the finest foot in all the world, and each represents many years of training. Tell her they are like Valyrian steel, folded over and over and hammered for years on end, until they are stronger and more resilient than any metal on earth. | „ |

“ | These ones do not feel burns as men do, yet such oil blinds and kills. The Unsullied do not fear to die, though. Give these ones rams, and we will batter down these gates or die in the attempt. | „ |

The Unsullied, known in High Valyrian as Dovaogēdys, are supporting characters in the A Song of Ice and Fire novel series and major characters in its television adaptation, Game of Thrones. They are legions of elite eunuch slave soldiers who are trained from a young age in Astapor and sold around to whoever requests them in the known world. The Unsullied are used as guards all over the Free Cities and are the primary defense force of Qohor. They make excellent guards and they do not loot, and will never rape.
In battle, the Unsullied are famously known for their excellent combat tactics and for being strongly disciplined. However, because of their strong loyalty and discipline, this makes them robotic in personality and they appear to possess a hive mind of sorts, as they would go as far as to do what their superior would order them to do, such as committing various atrocities.
The Unsullied from Astapor (thus the majority of them) became completely and undeniably loyal to their queen, Daenerys Targaryen, ever since she freed them from the Good Masters of Astapor. One Unsullied, Grey Worm, is one of Daenerys' greatest supporters. In the television series Game of Thrones, he is also the supreme commander of her entire army. Though they appeared as a heroic faction throughout, they became a much more villainous faction in the last two episodes of Game of Thrones.
Though George R. R. Martin states that the Unsullied were inspired by slave legions such as the Mamluks and the Janissaries. However, based on their weaponry and armor design in both the Novel and TV series, they appear to be similar to Spartan hoplites and Roman legionaries.
Biography[]
Founding[]
While it's unknown when the Unsullied were created, they were inspired by the legions of the Old Empire of Ghis, who are famously known for being a lockstep legion. How they were trained into becoming formidable and fearless warriors was often brutal and cruel; Boys under the age of five were selected to become Unsullied, though they were also chosen early when they were babies, in which they were castrated. Until they reach adulthood, they will go through intense training from morning until evening until they have mastered the use of a spear and shield, as well as a shortsword.
Game of Thrones[]
Season 3[]
When Daenerys Targaryen learned of the brutal training the Unsullied went through, she came up with a plan to free them. Upon meeting with the Good Masters, she offered to give one of her dragons, Drogon, to Kraznys mo Nakloz in exchange for all the Unsullied. Accepting it, Kraznys mo Nakloz takes Drogon and gives her the whip that controls the Unsullied. Using the whip, Daenerys was able to make the Unsullied loyal to her. Springing a trap she devised, she orders them to slaughter all the Good Masters and anyone who holds a whip. Obeying her, the Unsullied immediately killed all the ruling Good Masters, who are now powerless to stop them.
Once this was done, Daenerys tried to let them go, but they remained in their place, as they are now loyal to her. When she asked them to fight on her side as free men, they tapped their spears on the ground, showing that they accepted her as their new leader. During the campaign against Slavery, under Daenerys' request, they chose Grey Worm as their commander. When they reached Yunkai, Grey Worm and several Unsullied were able to sneak into the city in order to intimidate its ambassador, and they proceeded to overwhelm its forces. Thanks to their efforts, this resulted in all the slaves of Yunkai being set free.
Season 4, 5, and 6[]
During the campaign to liberate Slaver's Bay, the Unsullied accompanied and guarded her throughout. After successfully defeating the Slaver Alliance and abolishing slavery in Slaver's Bay, they, along with Daenerys, set sail for Westeros with the Targaryen, Dornish, and Tyrell fleets with the intent of helping her reclaim the Iron Throne and restore House Targaryen as the ruling house of Westeros.
Season 7[]
The Unsullied landed on the abandoned island of Dragonstone with their queen, and they secured the island fortress. Later, on Daenerys' orders and with the help of her Hand, Tyrion Lannister, they invaded and captured Casterly Rock, the ancestral stronghold of House Lannister, which had become the ruling house of the Seven Kingdoms following Cersei's ascension to the throne. However, the Unsullied soon noticed that the Targaryen fleet had been destroyed by the Iron Fleet, led by King Euron Greyjoy. Abandoning Casterly Rock, the Unsullied were forced to march through the Westerlands on the way back to the Crownlands, eventually reuniting with Daenerys at King's Landing, where the summit with Queen Cersei Lannister takes place.
Season 8[]
With Daenerys and two of her dragons, the Unsullied traveled north to the ancestral seat of House Stark, Winterfell, where they set up camp. They later participated with the people of the North during the fight against the White Walkers and the army of the dead, which resulted in total victory for the living. In the aftermath of the battle, the Unsullied lost 4,000 in numbers. Later, Grey Worm and some Unsullied accompanied Daenerys and Tyrion Lannister as they attempted to parley with Cersei, who executes Daenerys' advisor Missandei.
Many days later following Missandei’s death, when Martha, a Little Bird, reports to her master Varys that Daenerys hasn’t been eating for a very long time and notes of how her soldiers are watching Martha, this suggests that Daenerys, now slowly becoming unstable, has ordered the Unsullied to keep an eye on all the servants on Dragonstone, as she appears to suspect that someone is trying to poison her, indicating that she has become paranoid like her father.
Later, Grey Worm and some Unsullied arrested Varys, after Tyrion reported to Daenerys of Varys’s plot to place Jon Snow, her lover and nephew, on the Iron Throne, due to the fact that he is the son of Daenerys’ eldest brother Prince Rhaegar Targaryen and Lady Lyanna Stark. Grey Worm and the Unsullied were present when Daenerys ordered her dragon Drogon to execute Varys by burning him alive.

An Unsullied savagely murders an innocent civilian.
During the Battle at King's Landing, the entirety Unsullied forces joined with the Dothraki and the Northern and Vale forces in invading the capital. When Daenerys succumbed to the Targaryen madness and began burning the city, the Unsullied, along with the Northmen and Valemen, proceeded to follow in her footsteps and took part in sacking the capital, in which they slaughtered anyone that stood in their way, including countless innocent smallfolk. While the Unsullied rampaged through King's Landing, the armies of the north and Vale also did the same thing, but at the same time would rape any women they came across.

Tensions rise amongst the Unsullied and the northmen.
In the aftermath of the sack, the Unsullied were ordered by Daenerys to execute those who were still loyal to Cersei. When Jon Snow tried to stop this, they aimed their spears at him and his men in a threatening manner, showing that they would kill them if they dare intervene. Before the confrontation could intensify, Davos Seaworth convinces Jon that they should go and talk to Daenerys. As they leave, the Unsullied withdrew their spears as Grey Worm begins to slit the throats of the captured Lannister soldiers in cold blood. Later, the Unsullied and the Dothraki gathered at the Red Keep, where Daenerys praised them as "liberators" before declaring her intention of conquering Westeros and other nations in the known world. After Tyrion resign as Hand of the Queen out of disgust for Daenerys’ crimes, the latter orders some of the Unsullied to arrest him.
Later, Jon Snow killed Daenerys in order to save Westeros and the world from further destruction, causing immense outrage amongst the Unsullied, including Grey Worm, who proceeded to arrest and imprison Jon for regicide. In the coming weeks, the Unsullied continued to hold power over King's Landing until the high Westerosi lords and ladies gathered at a summit to decide the fates of Jon and Tyrion. Though Tyrion was brought out to the summit, the Unsullied kept Jon imprisoned as they wanted to punish him themselves for killing Daenerys, which would consequently spark a war with House Stark and the North. However, this was prevented when Bran Stark, who had been chosen to become the new king of the Seven Kingdoms, sentenced Jon to the Night's Watch for life. Though the Unsullied were not happy with it, they had no choice but to accept it, while Grey Worm agrees with the sentence. Later, the Unsullied left Westeros for the island of Naath, Missandei’s homeplace, so Grey Worm could fulfill his promise of protecting her people.
