Villain Overview

I see you differently now. Sorcerers today try hard to retain their humanity… so they refrain from using their powers to break what they can break. But their fear of alienation is a weakness. But you aren't like that. You're different. I don't consider you human anymore. So I'll crush you with everything I have.
~ Uraume recognizing Kinji Hakari's power.

Uraume, also known as the Frozen Star, is a major antagonist in the manga/anime series Jujutsu Kaisen. Uraume is a powerful and mysterious curse user who served Ryomen Sukuna, the King of Curses, a thousand years ago.

In the present day, they are a close ally of the curse user Kenjaku, who seeks to usher in a new age for humanity by evolving them using cursed energy while still continuing to serve under Sukuna.

They are voiced by Mitsuki Saiga in Japanese and by Erica Mendez in English. Saiga has also voiced Yelena in Attack on Titan, Chaos in Sailor Moon, Rossiu Adai in Gurren Lagann, Stoica in Bakugan Battle Brawlers, and Haihane in Sekirei. Mendez has also voiced Louisa May Alcott in Bungo Stray Dogs and Black Pearl Cookie in Cookie Run: Kingdom.

Appearance[]

When incarnated in the body of the Japanese woman Shiori Himi, Uraume has a youthful, androgynous appearance and is considered attractive. Their eyes are dark pink, and their eyelashes are long. They have straight white hair styled into a chin-length bob cut with bangs that reach down to their eyebrows. They also have a large horizontal strip of red hair looping around the back and sides of their head.

Uraume wears the traditional attire of a Japanese Buddhist monk, consisting of a white kimono, white tabi socks, zori sandals with purple thongs, a purple mo-bakama skirt, and a black kesa robe. When not wearing their kesa, they wear a tasuki sash to keep their kimono in place.

During the Heian era, in their original body, Uraume wears a loose-fitting light kimono and a dark haori. Their hair is cut shorter into a bowl cut and the red mark on the back of their head is missing.

Personality[]

Uraume seems to lack any sense of respect or regard for anyone other than Sukuna. They have a short temper and often exhibit impatience and boredom towards tasks that don't directly interest them, though they also know when to keep their feelings under wraps. Uraume feels no remorse for their immoral actions and even revel in inflicting pain on others and seeing others in distress.

Powers and Abilities[]

Powers[]

  • Energy Manipulation: Uraume is a curse user, a term used to describe a human who uses jujutsu sorcery to commit evil. Jujutsu sorcery is the practice of wielding cursed energy, a type of destructive internal energy source empowered by negative emotions, to create specific supernatural phenomena. All regular humans have their own supply of cursed energy, but only those with abundant amounts can become sorcerers. Users of jujutsu sorcery can use advanced techniques, known as "cursed techniques," to grant themselves special abilities. Those with a larger amount of cursed energy in their body are typically more powerful sorcerers. Uraume possesses vast amounts of cursed energy and is exceptionally honed and knowledgeable in its use. They can even use the "reverse cursed technique," an extremely complicated ability that involves shifting the natural negative state of cursed energy into positive "reverse cursed energy," which is capable of creating rather than destroying.
    • Cryokinesis:

Most sorcerers are born with the inherent ability to use a specific cursed technique, known as an "innate technique," which can often be used solely by them or members of their family. Uraume has an innate cursed technique called "Ice Formation" that allows them to conjure and telekinetically manipulate ice by lowering the temperature of the atmosphere around themself. Uraume has extremely fine control of their technique, demonstrated in their ability to summon and expertly control both small and large quantities of ice. The ice is capable of trapping opponents and, by finely focusing their cursed energy, Uraume can control how deeply a person is frozen. Even someone as powerful as Maki Zenin could be immobilized. Additionally, those trapped tightly enough by Uraume's ice will rip themselves apart if they try to move too much. Among Ice Formation's extension techniques is "Frost Calm," which consists of Uraume forming an icy mist around their mouth and then blowing it in the direction of their enemy. The mist freezes, creating large sheets of thick ice. By using Frost Calm at its maximum output, Uraume can freeze a massive area. Another extension technique is "Icefall". It consists of Uraume creating a sheet of ice on the ground, which they then break into smaller shards and telekinetically fired at their opponents. Those struck by the shards of ice will be immobilized, at which point Uraume will finish Icefall by skewering their trapped enemies with giant icicles from above.

  • Extrasensory Perception: Sorcerers such as Uraume are able to perceive cursed energy and cursed spirits, which can only be seen by regular people during a near-death experience.
  • Healing: The most common application of the reverse cursed technique is the ability to use reverse cursed energy to heal the wounds sustained by oneself. Due to the creative nature of reverse cursed energy, applying it to damaged tissue can completely rejuvenate fresh wounds. Uraume is capable of healing themself using the reverse cursed technique, being skilled enough with reverse cursed energy that they are able to recover from wounds in a few short moments. However, they are unable to detoxify themself of poison injected into their body by "Blood Manipulation," the innate technique of Choso. Additionally, even though they are able to heal from a blow they received from Satoru Gojo, they experienced prolonged pain where they'd been struck.
  • Physical Augmentation: One of the more basic applications of cursed energy is to use it to enhance one's own physical capabilities to a superhuman level. By coating themself in cursed energy, Uraume is able to reinforce their body against both physical and cursed energy attacks. With their enhanced body, they are able to endure Momo Nishimiya's Wind Scythe attack with their barehand, withstand being struck through several buildings with no obvious injuries, and even survive being hit by Satoru Gojo's Hollow Purple technique at twice its normal strength.

Abilities[]

  • Cooking: Uraume is a highly skilled cook capable of making delicious meals. It is their cooking that earned Uraume a place at Sukuna's side, as he enjoys eating humans but finds it difficult to cook them.

Trivia[]

  • The name Uraume, as written out in the original Japanese version of Jujutsu Kaisen, is comprised of the kanji 裏 ("ura") meaning "other side" and 梅 ("ume") meaning "plum."
