King Urathon IV Goodbrother, also known as Badbrother, is a minor character in the A Song of Ice and Fire novel series. During the Age of Heroes, he was a member of House Goodbrother and was High King of the Iron Islands.
Personality[]
Urathon IV Goodbrother is infamous for his mean-tempered and savagely cruel nature.
Biography[]
When King Urragon III Greyiron passed away, his family called a kingsmoot while one of his sons, Torgon, was away raiding the Mander. Though the sons of the late King Urragon hoped that one of them would be elected king, the ironborn chose Urathon Goodbrother instead. As High King of the Iron Islands, Urathon's first act was to execute all of Urragon's sons, earning him the infamous nickname "Badbrother." With the deaths of all his brothers, Torgon became the only surviving son of King Urragon III.
King Urathon IV would rule for two years, and because of his cruel nature, he made a lot of enemies, until only a few friends were left to remain loyal to him. When Torgon returned to the Iron Islands, he declared that the ironborn's decision at the Kingsmoot was unlawful, as he wasn't present to put forth his claim, as was his right. The ironborn and the priests of the Drowned God agreed. This led to Urathon's downfall, and he was put down and hacked into pieces by his own captains. With Urathon's death, Torgon (nicknamed "the Latecomer") succeeded him as king of the Iron Islands.
A Song of Ice and Fire[]
After losing the kingsmoot and ending up back at Deepwood Motte, lingering and waiting for the arrival of a northern army, Asha Greyjoy and Tristifer Botley discuss the option of returning to the Iron Islands to join Aeron Greyjoy's presumed opposition against King Euron III Greyjoy. While talking, Tristifer nonchalantly brings up King Urrathon IV Goodbrother's kingsmoot from the Age of Heroes while explaining that Euron's coronation was lawful. However, Asha, who just a few hours before learned that her brother, Theon Greyjoy, is still alive, realizes that they can make the last kingsmoot unlawful by using Theon's absence from the kingsmoot, just like it happened with Torgon Greyiron, which will give the ironborn an excuse to retry another choosing for their next monarch. Before she can do anything else about her idea, however, Asha ends up getting defeated and captured by Stannis Baratheon that same night, ending all hopes of removing Euron from power.
Trivia[]
- In A Dance with Dragons, he was originally called Urragon Goodbrother, but he was renamed Urrathon in The World of Ice & Fire. "Urrathon" was accepted by George R. R. Martin as the correct spelling.
