“ | Looks like the streets are running red with blood and metaphors. At least all of those no-talent monsters are taking their pain out in a real way. Being great is hard. The rest of us just don’t get it; we drive ourselves crazy with envy, longing for just a taste of the delicious madness of the creative mind. But the truth is, most people aren’t willing to put in the work: they focus on the success, the notoriety, the wealth that their "great" piece of art will bring, but the journey there is tedious. And those who achieve greatness only do so because they are f***ed-up enough to push through the pain and failure it takes to reach your potential. At least with these pills, the world can find out if you're any good. The truth is, history will only remember a handful of us, but at least now, we're leveling the playing field. | „ |
~ Ursula's final words in the season, as the Pale People tear through Los Angeles. |
Ursula Khan is one of the two main antagonists (alongside the Chemist) of Red Tide, the first half of American Horror Story: Double Feature.
She is the manipulative and power-hungry literary agent of Harry Gardner, who discovers and takes advantage of a small-town drug epidemic that turns people into vampires.
She was portrayed by Leslie Grossman, who also portrayed Margaret Booth in another American Horror Story season, 1984.
Story[]
Ursula is first seen pressuring screenwriter Harry Gardner into staying in Provincetown, Massachussetts, so he can finish his latest script. After reading the finalized screenplay and getting numerous offers and buyers, Ursula d travels to Provincetown, curious about what inspired Harry.
Upon her arrival, Ursula notices Harry's strange behavior. After going to a local bar and noticing famous writers Austin Sommers and Belle Noir, Ursula is greeted by a male prostitute named Mickey, who begs her to read drafts of his screenplay. Annoyed, Ursula begrudgingly takes the screenplay and reads it later that night, discovering that it's actually a masterpiece.
Meeting with Mickey, Ursula demands to know what is going on in Provincetown, and why there are so many talented writers appearing out of the blue. Mickey informs her of a pill called "Muse", created by a mysterious drug dealer known as the Chemist. Mickey then gives away the Chemist's location in exchange for a spot in Hollywood.
Ursula meets the Chemist and proposes a deal: Ursula will share profits with the Chemist, if the Chemist makes batches of Muse for Ursula’s clients in Los Angeles. Frustrated by someone interfering with her experiments, the Chemist orders Austin and Belle to kill Ursula and the Gardner family.
While babysitting Harry's daughter, Alma, Ursula witnesses the girl murder and drink the blood of the town's police chief. Finding out that Alma was using Muse, Ursula finally puts the pieces together: Muse is a drug that turns people into vampires. If the user is genuinely talented, Muse will unlock their true potential as an artist, at the cost of them becoming extremely egotistical and psychopathic, as well as having to feed on blood in order to survive. User that are not talented will be turned into violent, savage, and deformed vampires known as "Pale People".
Quotes[]
“ | Ursula: I'm blonde, not dumb. Strung-out methheads who only bathe when it rains do not write three million dollar screenplays like the one you just gave me. Now, you could throw Charles Bukowski and Hunter S. Thompson at me all you want, but those guys are the exception. Mickey: Well, maybe there's a bunch of talented people that just haven’t been discovered yet. Ursula: (scoffs) Bullshit. There are fewer talented writers in the world than there are astronauts. There's a few great ones, a lot of terrible ones, and a pack of interchangeable ones who move from one network writer's room to the next. My client, Harry, was one of those writers until he arrived here, and now he's Mark f***ing Twain. And I know who Peaches and Cream were on the piano last night; I was in the audience last year when Austin won two Tonys, and… I’ve rubbed a few out to the romance novels that Belle’s written when the Wi-Fi went down. And now, suddenly, the town's resident methhead f***wheel is writing movies that could go into production without a rewrite. Sorry homeboy, but there is something weird going on out here, and I wanna know what it is. |
