What is the work?[]
The Unfunnies is a 2004-2007 adult metafictional cosmic/horror comic book series penned by Mark Millar and, without any puns, is not funny. Set in a world similar to the one you'd see in a Hana-Barbera cartoon, the comic at first follows the Crow family going about their daily lives...at least until he gets arrested in literally the second page in under claims of possessing cheese pizza.
Then things get even more off the rocker as more abominable actions suddenly fester the once clean world.
Who is he? What has he done?[]
Dr. Despicable is a human mad scientist living in the cartoon world who is first introduced conversing with his patient, Sally Gator, over her troublesome 10-year-old daughter when she was selling drugs to kids. He offers her a remedy to her dilemma: a late abortion. Okay...worse being that this is likely not the first time he suggested the procedure to a parent.
When Pussywhisker, a lion, discovered that he had "testicular cancer," Dr. Despicable recommends removing his balls to keep the cancer from worsening. However, doing so would put a wedge in his and his wife's plans of having children. But the surgery is done regardless and Pussywhisker has to do some searching around to get his wife someone to pork in order for her to give birth...except it is revealed that she was on the pill the entire time and intentionally was stringing her husband along.
As for why Dr. Despicable would castrate Pussywhisker? Turns out he was competing with a fellow mad doctor over collecting hundreds of healthy testicles. Except he cheated due to taking both of the family jewels out of Pussywhisker's coin purse so he elects that they do a kidney contest next.
Freudian Excuse? Mitigating factors?[]
None. He appears affable when it comes to his patients, but it is nothing more than lies to manipulate them. Birdseed Betty, for instance, is given "happy pills" by him due to her having to cope with her husband being in jail and her son getting murdered by Hicks. After making the bet on collecting a healthy kidney next, he makes it obvious that Betty would be his first choice.
With him being a cartoon character himself unlike Troy who just switched places with a poor sap, there are no indications his moral agency was effected in any significant way. Rather, he just adjusts to the world demonstrating he is one of the worst the world had to offer.
Heinous standard[]
The Unfunnies is a dark, messed up world with it being mentioned lightly that there are rapists and murderers filling the jailhouse, though the only instance of this is Moe Crow molesting a child and later getting "special attention" from his fellow inmates.
Of course, the reason why the comic is so messed up is because of Troy Hicks's influence. He was a human serial killer in life who molested and murdered eight children only to try to perform a satanic ritual to evade his execution. He corrupts characters like Moe by linking him illegal material before successfully switching places with Frosty Pete (though I personally like the idea the series is just Troy's mad ramblings more). In the cartoon world, he kills a few more kids like a chick he forced to act crude under the constant threat of death until he got bored and blew his brains out.
As for Dr. Despicable, it is pretty plain to see how he stacks up: hundreds of instances of forced castrations all in the name of a bet and how he has access to specialists performing "late term abortions." Yeah. Fuck this comic.
