What is the Work[]

The Silver Chair is the sixth book in chronological order (but the 4th published) of The Chronicles of Narnia series. Instead of the Pevensie children, Eustace and Jill are called into Narnia to rescue the missing son of the King of Narnia.

Who is she? What has she done?[]

Who she was is not really important; there were several beliefs and theories about who she was such as her claim that she came from a land where her species never knew age nor death to the more insane such as her somehow being connected to Jadis.

Either way, the Lady of the Green Kirtle became the unofficial ruler of the Underland, the underground portions of the country of Narnia and decided that she wanted to rule the Overworld. Taking the form of a monstrous green serpent, she assassinated the wife of King Caspian X. His son, Rilian, desired vengeance, but when he went to kill her, she enchanted him with a charm and proceeded to brainwash him alongside the Earthmen (or gnomes). She would do this for 10 years; if Rilian were to break out of his trance? The Lady of the Green Kirtle designs the eponymous Silver Chair convincing him that if he didn't sit in it (and bind himself) he would go mad and become a serpent. As such, he became conditioned to the routine until the time was right for the Lady of the Green Kirtle to attack Narnia.

Jill, Eustace, and Puddleglum all are brought to Narnia to rescue the kidnapped prince and they immediately notice something is up with Rilian: he was being submissive to a woman! Oh the humanity!! But, yeah, they realize that he was under the Lady's spell and once he became cognitive again, he slashes the Silver Chair to pieces. Good thing for him because the Lady was intent on marrying him even though he would be having no consent in that.

The Lady of the Green Kirtle tries to brainwash Rilian and the three heroes which almost succeeds, but tries to kill all of them but is hacked to mincemeat herself.

Mitigating factors? Freudian Excuse?[]

Nope. Just some psychotic woman who has aspirations of world conquest.

Heinous standard[]

So to review: the White Witch destroyed her home world of Charn before causing the endless winter in Narnia among other monstrous acts. Shift, despite being a lowly Narnian talking beast uses the lie of Aslan and Tash being the same deity to sell his fellow Narnians into slavery along with overseeing the mass murders of the sapient dryads before handing Narnia over into the hands of their enemies.

So, the first thing? The brainwashing? I first mentioned my take on it when I did the DOR-15 removal wherein if it is just generic brainwashing where the victim does not suffer any lingering effects or was in an And I Must Scream fate then it lacks the extra "oomph" needed to take it out of being generic. Here? Don't think that is the case: when the three face Rilian, he laments over his life in Narnia prior to being captured...and when he asks for them to save him, he becomes angry at their hesitation lashing out and even frothing at the mouth. And then when he is freed, he is kinder and more relaxed. So, yeah; he was fully aware of what the Lady was putting him through. And she had been doing this for ten years.

Not to mention her grooming him so he could marry her which is just ew.

Ultimately think that what makes her stand out is the brainwashing which is shown to be pretty bad if Rilian was any indication.

Conclusion[]

Maybe for her, but I'll let you decide.
