What's the Work?[]

Imagine a movie so bad that they had to sue the actors to get them to work on it and once the film was done, it was moved from its planned theater run to go straight to direct-to-video out of fear that it would bomb horribly. Such a film exists. You're thinking of the 1996 trainwreck Theodore Rex, a film with Whoopi Golberg and an animatronic dinosaur in a buddy cop film noir.

In a world where dinosaurs have been brought back from extinction and have been given anthropomorphism, the titular Theodore "Teddy" Rex, who dreams of becoming a bigtime detective, is partnered with Katie Coltrane in a case involving two murder victims. They soon find themselves uncovering an evil plan that affects the fate of the world.

Introducing the mastermind behind it all: Elizar Kane.

Watch the Nostalgia Critic review here.

Who is Elizar Kane? What has he done?[]

A wealthy geneticist and billionaire, Kane is the one who brought sentient dinosaurs to life. While seen as a celebrity and father figure to the dinosaurs, he is actually anything but. He plans to launch a missile called "New Eden", powerful enough to block out the Sun, causing another Ice Age that will destroy the world and kill off all species on the planet, except for those inside Kane's Ark, where two of each species are kept in cryogenically frozen states. He plans to recreate the world in his own image and become revered as a god.

Two of New Eden's employees, a human named Adam and a dinosaur named Oliver, discover Kane's true plan and before they can expose his plan, they are assassinated by Kane's hired assassin, Edge and his gang. Teddy and Coltrane learn from the Toy Maker, an arms dealer that manufactures the butterfly bomb that killed Oliver about Kane's plan. Meanwhile, Kane is revealed to have a mole in the police force who he has frozen to death once he discovers that he failed to prevent Teddy and Coltrane from advancing in the case. Kane has Sebastian, a kid that Coltrane is friends with and Molly Rex, Teddy's love interest, kidnapped. Teddy and Coltrane raid Kane's gang's lair and force the leader to help them reach Kane's lair. Once they arrive, Kane has the lackey killed.

While Coltrane goes to rescue Sebastian, Kane unveils his plan to Teddy and has him placed in the Ark alongside Molly. As the missile is launched, Teddy pushes Kane's secretary and locks her in the Ark while he frees Molly. When Kane fails to win Teddy over, he shoots him and Coltraine nonfatally and leaves them to die while he and Edge drive off to prepare Kane's chamber. Coltraine can't do much when the reveal is made that she's a cyborg. Fortunately, Teddy catches up to Kane's car and causes it to crash, killing Edge. With only a few seconds left until detonation, Teddy snatches Kane's remote and deactivates the missile. With his plan foiled, Kane is arrested for his crimes.

Mitigating Factors[]

He shows himself as an affable person in public and has a fatherly figure to the dinosaurs, but this turns out to be an act, especially after he's unable to make Teddy see his views. When Teddy says he will never join him, Kane shoots Teddy, albeit nonfatally, and leaves him to die alongside the other lifeforms on the planet.

While it appears that Kane has well intentions for his actions in that he finds humanity to be flawed, his extremist beliefs are nullified once you figure out that his motivations are not settled by war, crime, or environmental damage. Instead, he cannot stand imperfections and wants to control evolution himself, making him become viewed as a god.

One of his minions, Veronica, is said to be his girlfriend, but Kane never shows any sort of love to her. To him, she's just a minion following his orders.

Heinous Standard[]

Sets it up pretty easily, as all of the murders are directly or indirectly coming from his orders. He's also the only one with a measurable goal of wiping out all life on Earth except for the ones on his Ark to become a god. The only one who comes close is his assassin Edge, who is a sadist that acts quite nasty to his goons, but he's still following Kane's orders.

Verdict[]

With his mass omnicide goal to become a god of a new Earth, I think he fits considering the film's genre is a children's buddy cop comedy film.
