Ever since Chouseishin Gransazer was finally released on TV Tokyo WW channel from YouTube, I was very anticipated on watching another Toho series other than Seven Star Fighting God Guyferd! Now after three months of watching marathon, I have finally finished watching the rest of the series which made me started in creating a proposal of the series' Big Bad.
Everyone, say hello to Chouseishin first PE villain ever, Belzeus.
What's the work?[]
Chouseishin Gransazer (超星神グランセイザー Chōseishin Guranseizā, lit. Ultra Star God Gransazer) is a Japanese science fantasy superhero tokusatsu television series produced by Toho and Konami and it was first aired on TV Tokyo from October 4, 2003 to September 25, 2004. It was the first installment of Chouseishin Series trilogy.
400 million years ago, the ancient human civilization has build the technologically-advanced weapon that's ever created by mankind, the Ultra Star Gods. However, the ancient civilization were attacked and exterminated by the intergalactic government from space that consists various types of aliens called the Warp Monarch. The Gransazers consists four elemental tribes called Flame, Wind, Earth and Water Tribes, and each members based on twelve Zodiac signs with animal totem or spirit representation. Now with the new line of Gransazers awakened, they united and worked together to defend the Earth from Warp Monarch until they finally learn the truth about the villainous group and behind the ancient war.
Who is he?[]
Belzeus (ベルゼウス Beruzeusu) is a main antagonist of Chouseishin Gransazer. He is a member of Warp Monarch High Council who leads the organization's Earth Invasion Force by tricking the rest of them into believing that humanity are descended from the Bosquito race in order to conquer the Earth and gain himself a foothold for his universal conquest. However, his plans were finally foiled after the new line of Gransazers revealed his true intentions to the rest of Warp Monarch and defeated him once and for all by destroying Cabryon, thus saving the Earth and Belzeus is taken back to Warp Monarch for him to face judgement.
What he has done?[]
Belzeus is a member of the race of aliens named Garbans who became the member of Warp Monarch High Council. By taking advantage of the ancient war between the ancient human civilization and the Warp Monarch, he tricked the rest of them into believing that humanity were descended from Bosquito, which allowed him to manipulate them into helping him conquer the Earth and gain himself a foothold for his universal conquest. Because of this, it led him into becoming responsible for everything that has happened in the entire series, such as Karin Saeki's manipulations on the Wind Tribe and attempted annihilation of the Gransazers, the Impactors' attempted destruction of Earth and humanity which resulted in Lucia and Radia's deaths and Logia's vendetta against Gransazers, and more aliens of Warp Monarch are coming to attack the Earth. Everything he did was all in Belzeus' hands as result.
While DaiLogian is stuck floating in space following Logia's last defeat at the hands of Gransazers, Belzeus decide to give him another chance by upgrading his DaiLogian into becoming stronger than before. Under Belzeus' orders, Logia is tasked of destroying the Crystal Tablet in order to prevent anyone from learning the truth about the ancient wars and it seemingly succeeds, but what they didn't know that the real one was swapped with a fake one by Akira/Remls. When Logia is about to defeat the DaiSazer, Belzeus ordered him to finish off the Gransazers, but Logia refused and decide to do things on his own ways after he destroyed the "Crystal Tablet". As result, Belzeus then proceed to betray Logia by taking over his DaiLogian with him and attempt to kill the Impactor. The next day, Belzeus later returns and using DaiLogian to kill both Tenma/Tarious and Mika/Mithras, but only for Logia to destroy the upgrade mask on DaiLogian's face and retaking it back from him.
That night, Belzeus sent Luka to Earth and manipulated her into released Bosquito from being sealed with her life force in order to use the creature for him to increase the Warp Monarch's Earth invasion, making him responsible for everything the creature has done such as rampaging through village to mountain and absorbing several people's live energy. Despite Luka realized who's the creature is and attempt to reasoned with him, Belzeus still ordered her to help Bosquito defeat the Gransazers and support it by giving it a life force and threatened to punish her if she dare to comply. However, the Gransazers managed to destroy Bosquito.
While the Warp Monarch are busy preparing their Earth invasion for three days, Belzeus sent a Warp Monarch agent Brighton to Earth to find the Communicator, which happens to be Ran Saotome/Sazer Visuel, to prevent her from awakening her true powers to contact with the Warp Monarch's Will and foiled his plans. While Brighton is waiting for JSDF to hand over Ran to him, Belzeus contacted him and ordered to kill her instead, which led to Brighton decide to take an extreme measure by summoning Algol to hunt down and kill Ran. When Ran goes missing following Algol's attack on her, Belzeus contacts Brighton and angrily berated him for taking so long during his mission to kill Ran and ordering him to do it again or else his plans of conquering the Earth will be foiled.
Following Brighton and Algol's destruction, Belzeus orders Gorgion to assassinate Ruby so they could kill Ran to prevent them from exposing their plans to the Warp Monarch while he was already have his next plan at his hand. After Gorgion failed to kill Ruby due to the Gransazers' intervention, he decide to give him another chance and orders to summon Cabryon to annihilate and distract the Gransazers so that he could kill Ruby. After Cabryon was sent to Earth and causing a rampage, he contacted Gransazers and boastingly gloated and taunted them of how they couldn't be able to save the Earth due to how powerful Cabryon is. While the Gransazers are fighting against Cabryon, he was pretty delighted of hearing that Tenma/Tarious and Ruby are seemingly annihilated and believed it's over before sadistically laughing out loud.
Now that Cabryon has taken down four of the Chouseishins, Belzeus then arrived at the Earth and search for Ran by himself in order to kill her before she could awakened her true powers as the Communicator. After taking down Tappei with one blast, he managed to defeat Ai/Pisces by doing the same thing to Tappei, followed with Ryoko/Velsou and Go/Tragos once he finally found Ran. When Belzeus was about to approach her menacingly before he could kill her once and for all, Ran succeeds in awakening her true power and finally get into her contact with the Warp Monarch's Will, allowing her to expose and revealing Belzeus' true nature and intentions to the rest of the Warp Monarch, preventing them to invade and attack the Earth. Now that the Gransazers are finally standing up together and four of the Chouseishins are brought back which allowed them to merged into DaiSazer, they finally destroy Cabryon and later the Garban Mothership, ending the Warp Monarch's threat towards Earth and humanity once and for all. Now that his plans are finally foiled, Belzeus is forced to be taken back to Warp Monarch by Logia to face his judgement for his heinous actions and crimes against Earth and humanity.
Heinous standards[]
For a common tokusatsu franchise such as Super Sentai, Kamen Rider and Ultra Series (my favorite one), the Chouseishin trilogy has a rather high heinous standards since Gransazer was pretty much connected to Justirisers and Sazer-X, but let's not talk about two sequels, okay?
Okay for the Gransazer series, most of the Warp Monarch are clearly full of anti-villainous WiE who are responsible for the extermination of the entire ancient human civilization because of Bosquito overrun the Planet Earth. By the present time, they later return to attack Earth again because they believed the rest of humanity were descended from Bosquito, but that wasn't actually true because they're manipulated by Belzeus. There are major villains we need to compare with, such as Karin Saeki (who manipulated the Wind Tribe into fighting their fellow Gransazers, the Flame Tribe and the Earth Tribe, as part of her plan to annihilate the rest of Gransazers), Logia (who attempt to destroy humanity and the Earth by hijacking Guntras and ramming it onto the sun), and finally Bosquito (who caused the annihilation of the ancient human civilization at the hands of Warp Monarch and later absorbing several people's life energy through village to mountains).
Belzeus can definitely be the only one who stands out as the most heinous villain amongst the others from the series due to having been orchestrated every events that has happened in the series, the examples are Karin's attempted annihilation of the Gransazers, the Impactors' attempted annihilation of the Earth and humanity which resulted in Lucia and Radia's deaths, and more aliens of Warp Monarch coming to attack Earth. The only reason everything that has happened is because he manipulated the Warp Monarch into helping him conquering the Earth by tricking them into believing that humanity were descended from Bosquito, all in order to annihilate the entire humanity and gain himself a foothold for his universal conquest. Now after a long 39-episodes, Belzeus finally make a move by ordering Logia to destroy the Crystal Tablet so no one could find out the truth while he personally upgrade his DaiLogian into something stronger than before, but only for him to take it over from Logia after he betrayed and attempt to kill the Impactor. He even manipulated Luka into releasing Bosquito from its imprisonment and used the creature to increase the Warp Monarch's Earth invasion, as well as being responsible for everything Bosquito had done following his awakening like absorbing life energy of several people through the village to the mountains.
Now the Warp Monarch will begin to invade Earth for three days, he personally sent Brighton to Earth to find and kill the Communicator, which happens to be Ran Saotome/Sazer Visuel, thus making him responsible for Ran almost committed suicide and everything that Algol and Troius has due to being part of Brighton's plan to kill Ran. Following the death of Brighton, Algol and Troius, he sent Gorgion to assassinate Ruby because she's the one who can protect Ran from getting killed and telling the truth about the Warp Monarch, and also Cabryon as a final weapon to annihilate Gransazers once and for all and conquer the Earth for him, which also made him responsible for Tenma/Tarious and Ruby almost killed during the battle. (And guess what? He just sadistically laughing out loud about it!) After Cabryon has taken down four Chouseishins, he later arrived at the Earth to personally kill Ran by himself and he would've succeed in doing so if he run towards her, but instead he's just walking towards her menacingly which allowed her to awakens her powers as a Communicator which managed to get into contact with the Warp Monarch's Will to expose and reveal Belzeus' true nature and intentions to the rest of the villainous organization, stopping them from attacking the Earth. Out of desperation, he orders Cabryon to destroy the Gransazers once and for all, but only for the monster to be finished by empowered DaiSazer, and now... Belzeus is done for.
Mitigating factors[]
Not really, since I don't find anything redeeming about this manipulative world/universal conqueror at all. While him claiming that humanity were descended from Bosquito seems like he's a well-intentioned extremist just like the rest of Warp Monarch, but you're WRONG. He only did this to manipulate the rest of the Warp Monarch into helping him conquer the Earth to wipe out all humanity and gain himself a foothold here for his universal conquest, which was opposed of what he claims or what the Warp Monarch are actually supposed to do.
Despite being a member of Warp Monarch himself, it safe to say that he doesn't actually care for his fellow members or his subordinates as he only treated them like his pawns for his plans and make them do the dirty work for him against their will, which is what opposed of what they're supposed to do as a Warp Monarch. But he also had no problem of threatening others into do what he says and not to dare comply, such as tried to order Logia to finish off Gransazers but only to take his DaiLogian from him (like taking a candy away from baby) once he refuses and prefer to do things his own way and Luka to support Bosquito by giving her life force to the creature and help it defeat Gransazers against her will despite realizing what the creature is. Even after Gorgion did everything for him as he managed to suicide bombed at Ruby which seemingly killed her, he never show his gratitude towards him and doesn't even concern for his death as well, as he was only cared about his ambitions of conquering the Earth and later the rest of universe and became overjoyed of hearing Tenma/Tarious and Ruby's apparent deaths before laughing maliciously out loud.
Final verdict[]
Easy keeper.
