~ For someone who claims himself to be tragic has proven himself to be a mentally insane hypocrite who let his hatred towards these robotic lifeforms gets the best of it. I mean, what does he think he is?! A megalomaniac narcissist?! |
Alright! Now let's all welcome the new PE candidate from Transformers franchise! But this time, it's from EarthSpark!
I've gotta say, the latest series Transformers: EarthSpark is pretty much the first Transformers show I've ever watched ever since it was first premiered on Paramount+ and I'm pretty much enjoy it. To be honest, I am necessarily didn't think Dr. Meridian is a solid PE because he appears to be a tragic figure, but by the time of the season finale, he's gone full-on Mandroid after he finally threw everything away he once had by letting his anger and hatred towards Cybertronians gets the best of it, resulting in him being a hypocrite as he began to use the Cybertronian technology to save himself. Yeah, this dude's a straight-up nasty as heck.
Now then, I am so hyped up to this moment that I cannot wait to do this! Since Pro no longer reserved the work, I'm thinking, you're thinking, hey, why not I should reserved it instead? Now while waiting for the second season to happen, I'll do the Mandroid for him, is that okay?
So without further ado, let's talk about Mandro-, I mean, Dr. Meridian, shall we?
What's the work?[]
Transformers: EarthSpark is a 2022 American animated sci-fi television series based on Transformers franchise by Hasbro and Takara. The series was first developed by Dale Malinowski, Ant Ward and Nicole Dubuc and it was released on Paramount+ since November 11, 2022. Many years after the war between Autobots and Decepticons has ended, both leaders Optimus and Megatron has join the G.H.O.S.T. organization and the Malto family are moving to a small town of Witwicky. However, both Malto siblings have accidentally created an Earth-born Cybetronians called Terrans through Emberstone they have found in the cave they visited. Now the Terrans are living with the Maltos and mentored by Bumblebee, they have gone through their daily lives and adventures together while facing many enemies as well.
Who is he?[]
Dr. Meridian, also known as Mandroid, is a main antagonist of the first season of Transformers: EarthSpark. Following the loss of his arm during the Autobots and Decepticons war, he swore to wipe out all Cybertronians in the name of the Earth's "savior" and "protector". Following his defeat at the hands of the Maltos and the Terrans, he became even more mentally insane and unhinged and later rejoined the G.H.O.S.T. under Agent Croft's supervision. Finally, he later wipe out all Cybertronians once and for all by using the spacebridge and recharged it with the Malto siblings' cyber-sleeves, but only for its effects to be reversed.
What he has done?[]
During the war between Autobots and Decepticons on Earth, Dr. Meridian was recruited by G.H.O.S.T. to be drafted under robotics and worked in a lab at San Francisco until the Autobots' friendly-fire destroys the building during the Battle of the Bay, resulting him losing his arm. However, he was able to survive with a help of Arachnamechs who became his loyal minions later on. These kind of traumatic experience of his caused himself to descend into madness so much that he wanted to destroy the rest of Cybertronians out of hatred and became obsessed over the idea of becoming the Earth's protector.
He sends the Arachnamechs to attack the G.H.O.S.T. convoys where the battle between Optimus and Elita-One against Swindle and Hardtop, but only to succeed in capturing Hardtop and detached his right arm which he later began to use it. After discovering the new kind of Transformer created by the Malto siblings through one of the Arachnamechs, he disguised himself as a G.H.O.S.T. soldier to capture both Twitch and Thrash to his base where he dubbed them as "Cybertronus terrans" while they called him "Mandroid" in return, much to his annoyance. Both Terrans are about to leave, but Mandroid stops them to have them experimented. When Optimus Prime, Megatron and Dot barged in to rescue them, he leaves the Arachnamechs and the Decepticons he captured to deal with them.
While testing out Hardtop's arm by using an Optimus Prime cardboard cutout as a target practice, Mandroid complains about how it's too hard to control it and sends the Arachnamechs to capture more Cybertronians to upgrade himself, which they're later destroyed by Robby, Alex, Twitch and along with Wheeljack.
Mandroid sends both Nova Storm and Skywarp to attack the G.H.O.S.T. base to capture Optimus Prime and detached his arm, but when they failed, he decide to use them as a bait for his next plan. Disguised as Agent Schloder, he and the Seekers managed to capture both Megatron and Dot Malto and takes them to his base. After explaining his backstory to Dot, he starts to cut off Megatron's arm and attempt to convince Dot to join him against the Cybertronians. But when Dot refused, Mandroid decide to use her badge he has taken to lure Optimus and the Terrans to his base. As he continues cutting off Megatron's arm, Dot managed to sabotage it by cuts off the cable for his laser cutter, saving him from getting his arm cut off. Angered, he ordered the Arachnamechs to hunt down Dot and almost got her killed until the new Terrans arrived as they pretend they brought Optimus, Twitch and Thrash to him, but Mandroid sees right through their deceptions and ordered the Arachnamechs to attack them.
Once he was being cornered, Mandroid decide to take matters into his own hands by turning his base into a giant mech to attack the heroes by unleashing a giant laser on them. After the Maltos and Jawbreaker takes down all cameras on the giant mech, Mandroid decide to attack the heroes blindly, overpowering them and critically injured Megatron as result. To take out the cannon, Twitch dashed away to cut off the cannon while Dot using the battleship cannon to destroy the giant mech, with no sign of Mandroid later on.
However, Mandroid somehow survives and move to Philadelphia where he collaborated with the underground Bot Brawl, where he gathered Cybertronians to fight each other to death until he mutilated those who have lost for their spare parts for his personal gain. At some point, he also brainwashed Grimlock into his side to solve the organizers' "dino-problem". When Bumblebee, the Terrans and the Malto siblings are investigating the remains of Bot Brawl arena from last time, Mandroid shoots a missile to set the arena on fire around ablaze and reveals himself in front of them. After he brushed off Twitch's attempting at reasoning with him, Mandroid captures Bumblebee and have his Energon drained inside of him before sending the Arachnamechs to form themselves into a giant centipede to attack the Terrans and the Malto siblings until they're defeated.
He later took control of Hashtag and forced her to attack her own family. Meanwhile, inside Hashtag, he relentlessly mocked her over the fact she doesn't belong anywhere just to break her spirit and make her fell into despair, but after hearing from the Malto siblings and her fellow Terrans' encouragement, Hashtag managed to break free from Mandroid's control. Defeated, weakened and exhausted, Mandroid was brought into the G.H.O.S.T. headquarters where he was encountered by Agent Croft who orders him to make more controlling chips for her and gave the Decepticon prisoners as his test subjects, which he gleefully accepts.
Under Agent Croft's orders, Mandroid created a line of Ghoids for her, which made him responsible for the events of "Stowed Away, Stowaways" later on as Croft used them all to attack Bumblebee, the Terrans, Robby and even her own brother Agent Schloder when they discover her true nature and intentions.
After Agent Croft gave him an access to G.H.O.S.T. database, Mandroid is spying on the Autobots and the Maltos through the security camera where he learned about the Emberstone and the cyber-sleeves, which gave him an idea on how to save himself. While spying at the training simulation where the Malto siblings and the Terrans are training, he took control over the simulation by changing the background into a spacebridge battleground and the hologram of Megatron has emerged. While Hashtag went to shut down the simulation, Robby risked himself of defeating Megatron by his own, leading his cyber-sleeve to be destroyed, severing his emotional link to the Terrans as result. When Agent Croft come to check on him and berated him for the damage to the G.H.O.S.T. systems, Mandroid requested her to bring him the Emberstone.
After Agent Croft brought him the Emberstone as he requested, Mandroid puts it on the equipment attached to his body, giving him access to Quintus Prime's ship as he teleported here after the Maltos. Seeing the spaceship is heading down to Earth, he took control of the spaceship to crash it down to the Earth's surface so the Maltos will be perished. While Dot and Alex went to stop the ship, Mo went to confronts Mandroid and used her arm blade against him. Grew tired of this, Mandroid breaks Mo's arm blade and attempt to kill her in cold blood, but only to be stopped by her brother Robby and he slams him down to the ground. When Mandroid was about to kill Robby for standing in his way, Mo managed to save him by using the power of Quintus Prime to stop time and taking off the Emberstone from Mandroid's body, declaring he's not worthy. Later, Mandroid was never be seen again once the Maltos are teleported to the green glass bridge in space where they talk to Quintus Prime.
Mandroid arrived at the spacebridge where Agent Croft is busy cleaning it up following Bumblebee and Maltos' infiltration at the G.H.O.S.T. base. He gave her a badge controller that could control anyone or anything wears the badge, which gave Croft an opportunity to slaps a badge on him, but was stopped by Mandroid who reminded her to be focusing on the Maltos and the Terrans. After opening the spacebridge, he threatens to throw Agent Croft into the portal and threw her aside, telling her to gave the Maltos his best before he left.
However, the portal took him to outer space where he was finally cured as he was technologically enchanced with a cybernetic suit and later met the pair of Sharkticons named Razor-Fin and Blitzwave who swore their loyalty after helping them liberated their planet from its invasive oppressors. After being gone more than a year, Mandroid later arrived back to the Earth with his pair of Sharkticons. After he demonstrates his point by using his spear to deactivate Shockwave, he demanded the Malto siblings to surrender themselves so he could use their cyber-sleeves for his plans, but only for the Maltos to run away from him. Mandroid invites her to the spacebridge to reveal about her conditions. He later managed to catch up with the Malto siblings and shoots them down with his spear. After the Malto siblings and the Terrans defeat the pair of Sharkticons, Mandroid knocks them out and captured the Malto siblings, using his spear to absorb the energy from their cyber-sleeves before showing them "mercy" by tossing them into Razor-Fin's mouth. He then left Twitch and Nightshade to be seemingly annihilated after Blitzwave fire a missiles at them.
After capturing the Malto siblings, he hooked their cyber-sleeves into the device that empowers the spacebridge which turns it into a superweapon that Mandroid meets up with Agent Croft where he reveals that the device on her hand has scarred her with energon before he demonstrates his point by activating the spacebridge, thus killing her as result (although she deserved it). When the heroes rushed off to attack him, Mandroid activate the spacebridge and attacks her enemies. Bumblebee attempt to get to the portal machine to set it up for evacuation, but only to be stopped by Mandroid until Jon Schloder grabs his spear and shoots him in the face to avenge his sister. As the heroes were about to get to the spacebridge, Twitch was horrified of witnessing the Maltos being held captive in a mechanical vines linked to the bridge. Later, the underground base has transformed into a large spire filled with Energon and the spacebridge that resembles a crescent moon on top of it after it emerges from the ground.
To ensure the spacebridge will be completed once it was finished charging with the Malto siblings' cyber-sleeves, Mandroid sending the pair of Sharkticons to deal with the Terrans and their allies to keep them from getting to the spire while also activating the badge controller to brainwash the Autobots into helping them for their additional help. However, Twitch and Thrash managed to get to the top of the spire while the others deal with their enemies. Twitch demanded him to turn off the spacebridge while Thrash is on top of it, but instead Mandroid use his badge controller to summon Megatron into attacking Twitch while he went to ambush Thrash on top of the spacebridge.
During the fight, Thrash calling him out for what he has done to the Cybertronians and his hypocriscy, which Mandroid replied he did this for his own survival and claimed Cybertronians aren't people, but Thrash denies this and viewed him as an enemy that must be stopped. With Twitch later joining in, both Terrans are standing up against him and calling him out for throwing everything he once has away and letting his anger and hatred consumed him. Unfortunately, Mandroid managed to buy more time for the spacebridge to be finished charging and unleashed a large waves to deactivate all Cybertronians around the world, including sacrificing the pair of Sharkticons as well. Now finally accomplished his goal of wiping out all Cybertronians, Mandroid believes the world is finally free of those "monsters" before passing out peacefully. However, the Malto siblings regained their conciousness and later using their cyber-sleeves to reverse the effects, resulting the rest of Cybertronians to be brought back to life, including their Terran siblings as well.
Heinous standards[]
The Transformers franchise does have a high heinous standards whenever it comes with Megatron, Starscream, the other Decepticons, or any much worse than them all. Despite being based on the G1 franchise, the EarthSpark has its own continuity without any connection to the G1 or the other shows, at all, so it's just like Animated series who has its own continuity without being connected to other shows at all. While most of the Decepticons were seen as a tragic figure and does their own ways following the Great War, the only thing that Dr. Meridian has to compete was none other than Executive Agent Croft since she's the mastermind behind the Bot Brawl competition which led to several deaths of Cybertronians and planning to use the spacebridge to destroy Cybetron.
Well, let's see what Mandroid do? Yes... Following the loss of his arm during the Great War, Mandroid swore to destroy the rest of the Cybertronians on Earth in order to be failed as the hero and savior of this entire planet. Really? Sheesh... During the debut of the series, he captured Hardtop and removed his arm which he used it as his first mechanical arm. The next day, he captured both newly-made Terrans called Twitch and Thrash and brought them to his lab to have them to be experimented at, but not before Optimus, Megatron and Dot barged in to save them, he brainwashed the Decepticons he captured were Hardtop, Shrapnel, Bombshell and Skullcruncher just to deal with them before leaving. He personally sends both Nova Storm and Skywarp to G.H.O.S.T. capture Optimus Prime for his arm, which he's responsible for the attack on the base that clearly endangered many people there. After capturing both Megatron and Dot, Mandroid attempts to cut off the former's arm while intended to kill the latter out of petty spite until Optimus and the Terrans arrived. Once he has cornered, he turns his entire base into a giant mech to kill all of the heroes, not caring if there are children here like the Malto siblings Robby and Mo. After the cameras on the giant mech were all taken down, he took the drastic measures by attacking them all blindly, using the cannon's laser to give them a hard time, especially injured Megatron critically despite his arm is almost getting detached.
Following his survival from his last defeat, he moved to Philadelphia and collaborated with an underground Bot Brawl where he gathered many Cybertronians into fight each other to deaths and mutilates and dismember those who lost for their spare parts for own personal gains, even collecting the Cybertronian corpses and then hanging down in his new lab after that, just like the screencap of the episode "Home, Part 1" from the right. This makes him somehow having the same vibes as his fellow Transformers PEs, TFA Lockdown and Airachnid who has done the same thing to their fellow Cybertronians as well. One of them happens to be Brawl, who is hanging from the ceiling tangled by the Airachnids' webs after he was drained from the energon (judging by the liquid of energon leaking from his body above and there's a lot of them on the ground) and his left arm is being detached from him (which was used by Mandroid as it was shown later on). Not to mention is that he brainwashed Grimlock with a controlling chip to solve the organizers' "dino-problem" and then forcing him to fought against Bumblebee, the Terrans and the Malto siblings that was handled out later on. As the heroes are confronted by him, Mandroid captures Bumblebee and attempt to have his entire energon drained from the inside before sending the Arachnamechs to attack the Terrans and the Malto siblings by combining themselves into a giant centipede. Despite Bumblebee is freed and the Arachnamechs are defeated, Mandroid has no problem putting a controlling chip on Hashtag's body and brainwashed her into attacking her own family, even making the chip being impossible to be released from her body unlike the previous ones (though Hashtag was able to break free from Mandroid's controll despite this). But not only that, Mandroid even psychologically and emotionally breaks Hashtag from the inside by mocking her that she was under his control and she didn't belong anywhere, including her family, all in order to break her spirits and make her fell into despair, but not before the Terrans and the Malto siblings encouraged her, he attempt to keep her from listening in order to continued breaking her from the inside and keep putting her under his control but to no avail. Despite being freed from Mandroid's control, Hashtag is still traumatized over the events as she remembers about the time where she's under his control and is forced to attack her family.
After he learned more about the cyber-sleeves and the Emberstone, Mandroid takes control of the training simulation room by turning it into a spacebridge battleground and emerged the hologram of Megatron, whom he took control of it to attack the Terrans and the Malto siblings. Because of this, he caused Robby to risk himself defeating "Megatron" to save his family which led to his cyber-sleeve became broken during the fight and his emotional link to the Terrans has been severed because of this. Not only that, this also almost gotten Robby to be killed because the infection spreading into his body has worsened his health condition if the cyber-sleeve if it doesn't get fixed if it weren't for his sister Mo. Oh yeah, after he received an Emberstone from Agent Croft, Mandroid used it which gives him an access to Quintus Prime's spaceship and then later takes control of it to make it crashing it down to the Earth's surface, hoping to get the Maltos killed but not before Mo stops the time and takes away the Emberstone from him to save her family from an impending danger on them he has put through. At some point, he created a line of Ghoids for Agent Croft which was later used to attack Bumblebee, Robby and the Terrans after they discover her true nature and intentions.
However, the season finale makes him far more worse since he became even dangerous and monstrous then before, after he received himself a cybernetic armor that cure him from his illness. After he returns back to the Earth with his loyal Sharkticon minions, Mandroid used a spear that could deactivate Energon-based lifeforms, this was shown as he used it against Shockwave to prove his point, thus deactivating him as result. To capture both Malto siblings to use their cyber-sleeves for his plans, he send both Sharkticons to capture the Malto family, including the children as well, despite promising to give them "mercy". Once he finally capture the Malto siblings, he used his spear to absorbed the energy from their cyber-sleeves before leaving both Twitch and Nightshade almost got killed as Blitzwave fires a missiles at them. He later held the rest of Malto family captive in a mechanical vines while hooking the children's arms with a device that makes their cyber-sleeves empowering the spacebridge, and by using it will wiping out all Cybertronians from the entire world. The badge controller he just gave to Agent Croft before were clearly infecting her with all Energon, which makes sense why her entire body was scarred. Because of this, Agent Croft was disintragrated to death (though she deserved it) as Mandroid open up the spacebridge with his spear to proved the superweapon can be used to annihilate all Energon-based lifeforms including Cybertronians. Croft's death also caused her brother Agent Schloder to be devastated as he witnessed it despite how much she treats him. While fighting against her enemies, he attempt to prevent Bumblebee from using the portal machine to set up the evacuation before Schloder stops him to avenge his sister.
After the underground base emerges into a large spire filled with Energon and the spacebridge that resembles a crescent moon on top of it, he began to charged the spacebridge with the Malto siblings' cyber-sleeves so he could used it to wipe out all Cybertronians without using the spear he lost at the hands of the heroes. Knowing that the heroes will get to the spire to stop his genocidal plans against the Cybertronians, he sends the Sharkticons to deal with them while using the badge controller, a device that could control anyone or anything with G.H.O.S.T. badge, which happens to be used on the Autobots for the aid as well, leading Optimus and Elita-One to be deactivated during their fight with the heroes because of this. Once Twitch and Thrash gets on top of the spire, Mandroid used the badge controller to control Megatron into attacking Twitch while he went to attack Thrash where he was called out for everything he has done and everything he threw away from the inside. Despite being outmatched by the Terrans, Mandroid spitefully decide to activate the spacebridge once it was fully-charged with the Malto siblings' cyber-sleeves, thus deactivating all of the Cybertronians all around the world including the Autobots and Decepticons, while also sacrificing both of his loyal Sharkticons as well. However, the effects were later reversed as the Cybertronians were brought back with the Malto siblings' cyber-sleeves.
So yeah, all of the heinous crimes that Mandroid has caused has made him stand out as the worst amongst the other villains in the series.
Mitigating factors[]
“ | Thrash: My family brings people together! Twitch: G.H.O.S.T., Autobots and Decepticons! Humans and Cybertronians together! You've lost sight of what you're fighting for, Mandroid! You've lost that spark of hope inside, your humanity! Thrash: Without it, all that's left is hate! Twitch: And anger! Thrash: And fear! Twitch: The Maltos are the ones making the Earth a better place! Thrash: We are the legacy of hope! |
„ |
~ Twitch and Thrash's statement was proved to be right about Mandroid as his tragedy no longer holds up anymore since he has thrown everything away from the inside out of the window and he let his hatred and despair entirely consumed him. |
Prior to the series, Dr. Meridian used to have that kind of tragedy where he was a victim of the Great War on Earth who lost his own colleagues and barely survived but at the cost of his own arm, which made him certainly developed a hatred and grudge against all Cybertronians for brought the misery upon the Earth as result. After explaining his backstory to Dot, she clearly understands how much he has been through as she lost her own leg as well, but instead decide to help to make the world a better place by bringing Cybertronians and humans together unlike him and Agent Croft. By the time of the season finale, his tragedy were no longer brought up anymore as he began his genocidal plans against all Cybertronians from all around the world, which later outweighs everything he used to have from the inside. Twitch and Thrash even had a right thing of calling him out for this. Though it seems he may have used to be a good person before the Great War, Mandroid later gets over with it during the war, thus throwing everything he used to have from the inside away, turning him into an obsessed Knight Templar and a narcissistic hypocrite as result.
Though his intentions of wiping out all Cybertronians from the Earth to save the entire humanity and prevent anymore tragedy they've brought upon may sounds like he's a Well-Intentioned Extremist, he's clearly ANYTHING but that since what he did is nothing but out of delusion and prejudice because these kind of traumatic events made him a mentally insane person as he is. Though Dot used to have that kind of tragedy as he is, she never let her tragedy consumed her and decide to move on to help making the world a better place by bringing the Cybertronians and the humans together. Not to mention that all of the heinous crimes he has done to the Autobots, Decepticons and the Malto family, including his attempted at wiping out all Cybertronians from all around the world, proves that everything he did is more out of harm rather than good, showing that despite wanting to save the entire mankind, he has no qualms of harming other humans, like the Malto family, who was against him as well.
He clearly doesn't care about anyone other than himself just for the sake of his ambitions. Despite the Arachnamechs were being his loyal minions and treats them normally, it makes clear that Mandroid only treats them like a disposable pawns and rarely abused them out of frustrations as well. He also has no qualms of using few of Decepticons for his own goals as well, such as brainwashed few of them into deal with Optimus, Megatron and Dot who barged into his base to save Twitch and Thrash and using Nova Storm and Skywarp as baits to capture both Megatron and Dot. While he did agreed to work with Agent Croft as he helped her with the underground Bot Brawl and its "dino-problem", and also helping her creating more inventions like the line of Ghoids and a badge controller for her, their interactions are nothing more than out of personal interests for their own goals instead of genuine friendship, which proves as Mandroid has no qualms of killing Croft while Croft attempts to slap the G.H.O.S.T. badge on his cybernetic arm. He does the same treatment to both Sharkticons as his pawns just like he did to the Arachnamechs despite their loyalty to him. Despite claimed that both were an exception during his plans to wipe out all Cybertronians from the entire world, it was later proven to be a lie as he only used his "goodness" towards them to secure their loyalty to him and has no qualms of sacrificing them as he activates the spacebridge to deactivate all Cybertronians from around the world.
Though he seems to be insane following the Great War on Earth which led to loss of his colleagues and own arms, there's no proof that Mandroid has moral agency issues as he still knew what is right or wrong despite being mentally insane, but he still chose to do the opposite despite claimed it's for the good of humanity. Despite how delusional he may have become, he is still aware of his surroundings and still kept his intelligence he could use for his own plans, as he catched Agent Croft for trying to put a G.H.O.S.T. badge on him. Even if the Great War has already ended prior to the series, he refused to move on from the past and still used it as an excuse to justify his own actions no matter how much pain he has gone through but only for him to threw everything away he once has out the window. No matter how much Dot and Twitch shows pity and sympathy over what he's been through, Mandroid simply brushed it off as he choose his goals and ambitions instead of accepting their pitiful words, proving he's beyond saving at all.
He does have few comedic moments throughout the series, especially whenever it comes with his minions or enemies, or the nickname "Mandroid" he received which he hates, none of them proves it was entirely played for laughs as himself and his actions were taken seriously. As he became far much worse in the season finale, he later gets over with it once his intentions of wiping out all Cybertronians from the entire world is proven he's more despicable than before.
Though his final scene showing Dr. Meridian passing out peacefully after finally using the spacebridge to wipe out all Cybertronians once and for all may be played for sympathy, well, no it wasn't, at all. Rather than expressing his sadness or regret over his actions, Mandroid is clearly proud over his accomplishments that he finally got rid of those "monsters" from the entire world and didn't cared if he seemingly dies along with them despite becoming like them for his own survival. This proves how much of a despicable madman he is.
From a genuine victim of a tragedy during the Great War who lost his arms turning into a despicable madman who wanted to destroy all of the robotic lifeforms out of sheer hatred over the tragedy they have brought upon, it makes clear that all of Dr. Meridian's redeeming qualities has absolutely thrown out of the window and became a true monster instead of a savior of the world like he turns out to be in the end.
Final verdict[]
With All For One and later Emperor Belos as a source of inspiration and "Mandroid" being like the Terminator (LOL sorry cannot resist 😂), special thanks to Diedrich Bader for his excellent performance of Mandroid by giving him an easy yes.
