Who is he?[]
Leif Bäckström is the main antagonist of 1996 Swedish movie The Hunters, originally known as Jägarna in Swedish. He is the brother and arch-enemy of the protagonist Erik and the leader of hunting groups who committed crimes.
What he has done?[]
Erik and his brother Leif grew up with their abusive father. Erik moved on while Leif stay with his father. As an adult, Erik felt guilty for leaving his brother with his father.
Erik, now a police officer, returned where he reunited with his relatives upon his father's death, where Leif still lives. When they were out going fishing, Leif said that his father caused him to stop singing and lives with him instead. At the next day, it was reported that there was a poaching that the citizens think that the police don't do much. That night, Erik hangs out with Leif and his friends at the bar. Erik also met a Filipino woman named Nena. When Erik was discovering illegal weapons at Tomme's car, Leif and his gang caught him before he leaves with their weapons. He was unaware that Leif was the fact is an illegal hunter, which he has been keeping a secret from his brother.
The next day, Leif angrily shoots his dog Zorro for not following his orders. That night, Erik break into the gang's facility and found those illegal weapons and animal carcasses inside. When the gang got back, they noticed the broken window and found Erik attacking him. He was cornered until Leif knocks him down. When Erik wakes up, the evidence was eventually removed and he failed to convince the police about it. Because of Erik being a police and could potentially arrest them all, they decided to vandalize Erik's car by shaterring the front windshield.
Meanwhile, Leif and his gang going on a poach. Tomme was about to shoot a deer until he accidentally shoots Russian bilberry worker. They put a corpse inside a red car and dump them in it until they saw the worker's wife witnessing it before she runs away. Not letting it happened, Leif chases and killed her in order to shut her up, but he was unaware that mentally-ill Ove witnessed it. However, Hakan was horrified with his actions and Leif doesn't care.
Later that night, Erik hangs out with Nena before Leif comes back home. Leif proceeding to insults both of them until Erik beats him up after he slapped her.
Later the day, Nena is left alone in the Bäckström household while Erik is left for the speech. Suddenly, Leif and his gang arrived and raping her. When Erik got home, he noticed that Nena is gone.
Leif realized that Ove witnessed it, so he and his gang prepared to kill him. Later that day, he and his gang apporached Ove and manipulating him into hanging out with them in the forest. However, it was all a ruse to kill him in order to shut him up. When Erik finds his corpse, he revealed that Ove was their half-brother while Leif and his gang did nothing but faking mourning his death. At the police station, Leif lied that it was an accident and Ove had nagged him and his gang.
That night, Erik interrogates Tomme and beats him up. Tomme was forced to admit that he accidentally killed the Bilberry worker while Leif killed his wife. When he got back home, Erik angrily interrogates his brother Leif about Nena's whereabouts, which he claimed that he never knows. Leif then promised that he will "settled things right" by turning in to the police. When Erik was about to leave, it turns out that Leif killed himself by blowing himself up alongside the house.
Heinous standard[]
Unlike his subordinates who were just loyal to him and was following his orders, Leif is the most evil one in the movie since he killed most of the animals and several people. He is also known to be racist towards others, as he mocked Nena and raped her.
Leif and his gang secretly went out poaching without letting everyone know. When Erik was investigating the gang's facility, the gang tried to attack him before Leif knocked him out and removed the evidence from the facility in order to not get caught. He and his gang are also into vandalism, as they shattered the front windshield on Erik's car out of fear that Erik will potentially arrest them because he is a police. After Tomme accidentally killed a Bilberry worker, they dumped the red car where his body were inside and Leif killed a woman after she witnessed it. After Leif got back home, he proceed to insult Nena, showing him to be xenophobic. He and his gang raping Nena until they were responsible for her disappearance. For Moral Event Horizon, he and his gang spitefully killed Ove just because he witnessed the murder of the woman.
Mitigating factors[]
None. He is a sociopathic and merciless person who has no regret over his actions and didn't care if he hurt others for fun. Despite being abused by his father, he eventually gets over with it and began to hate Erik for this. Although he was friendly towards his brother Erik at first, it was actually a facade so he doesn't found out that he is actually an illegal hunter. When Tomme sexually harassed Nena, Leif became annoyed and told him to let her go, which was most likely out of pragmatic since his brother Erik was there and was actually a rapist. When Hakan was horrified for his actions, Leif did not care for what he has done and told him to get over it. He even puts on his friendly facade again when he offered Ove to hang out with them in order to kill him to cover up their crimes. Although he promised to his brother Erik that he will "settled things right" by turning in to the police, it is actually shown that he killed himself by blowing himself and the house up out of getting arrested, showing him to be dishonest.
Final verdict[]
Yes. He has never played for sympathy.
