“ | Amora, this is madness. How could you be in league with Surtur? You are Vanir; good or evil, you believe in life. Surtur would see everything burn! | „ |
~ Isn't it ironic how the manipulative witch who gave Chemistro and Living Laser fates worse than death, is now trapped within one herself? |
My fourth Avengers: EMH proposal. After this I'm gonna do a removal proposal for Ultron (he has moral agency issues and overall is nowhere near as awful as is to be expected from the character), and then I'll finally move onto more comic villains.
Who's Surtur and what does he do?[]
Surtur was able to leave Muspelheim after Baron Zemo betrayed the Enchantress and then stole the last Norn Stone, after which he killed countless dwarves and even scarring Eitri's eye on Nidavellir while reclaiming the shards of his Twilight sword. When Wonder Man (whose fate was thus left ambiguous) destroyed the last Norn Stone, the Enchantress teleported far away into the palm of Surtur's hand. Surtur brainwashed Amora into his Demon Queen before going on a galaxy-wide killing spree on the planet Korbin, where he kidnapped people by the score while also using their sun to reforge his sword, thus destroying both this planet and at least two neighboring ones.
Fortunately, Beta Ray Bill used his spaceship called Skuttlebutt to save as many Korbinites as he could, putting them in cryosleep before fleeing the planet entirely. Unable to settle with destroying just planets, however, Surtur sends Amora and an army of Fire Demons to attack Skuttlebutt and kill off the surviving Korbinites. Thor, Sif and Beta Ray Bill eventually kill all the Demons before they can actually succeed, while Amora has just enough clarity of mind to briefly ask for a mercy kill afterwards. Unfortunately, Surtur comes back and talks through Amora, sadistically taunting Thor with the fact that she's beyond help now. Surtur then finally manages to fully reforge his sword. At the end of the episode "Powerless", it's revealed that Surtur orchestrated Amora giving Loki a chance at revenge towards the Avengers with the Destroyer armor.
Due to the show's cancellation, Surtur's story sadly never gets resolved, meaning that he faces no comeuppance for his actions.
Mitigating factors[]
He's literally a demon, what do you think? Definite no. While he doesn't have too much regarding personality traits, I wouldn't go so far as to call him a generic doomsday villain since nothing really indicates that he's made of evil. He's the only fire demon to show any signs of sentience whatsoever, and he even shows a degree of sadism by taunting Thor with the fact that the Enchantress is now beyond help and thus will never be free from his control.
Heinous standard[]
The only other villain who tries to destroy...well, everything is Loki, who had the "resource" of being in more episodes as well as two movies. Furthermore, Surtur's confirmed kill count is much higher than Loki's, destroying at least three planets onscreen as well as several dwarves on Nidavellir. He also tries to wipe out the remaining Korbinites and enslaves the Enchantress into becoming his right-hand woman, the latter of which is far from Fridge Horror since she literally begs Thor to mercy-kill her when she has even a little clarity of mind. And Surtur has no apparent motive apart from "for the evulz", so all in all I'd say he meets the standard.
Final verdict[]
Easy yes. Again he's a pretty flat character but not an outright GDV, and he has a confirmed kill count of billions.
