NOTE: This proposal will solely focus on her film counterpart, not the comic book one as she fails the heinous standards there.

Ava shooting Dwight

You've just made me a very rich woman.

The Goddess takes no lover, the Goddess makes slaves of men. In an instant, she can see to the heart of you. Transform to your deepest desire. To Damien Lord, she was the Princess Bride. To you? A damsel-in-distress. She devoured all of you. You cannot defeat the goddess. She cannot die.
~ Manute describing Ava Lord.

Since it’s going to be the tenth anniversary of this movie, I’m going to be making a celebratory post for a villain that I initially dismissed but now thinking about it more: she warrants a closer look.

What’s the Work?[]

Sin City and Sin City: A Dame to Kill For are a duology from 2005 and 2014 respectively, based on Frank Miller’s comics on the same name. Both films starring an ensemble cast and centering on certain stories (The Customer is Always Right, The Yellow Bastard, The Hard Goodbye and The Big Fat Kill for the first and Just Another Saturday Night, The Long Bad Night, A Dame to Kill For, and Nancy’s Last Dance for the second).

This proposal in particular is on A Dame to Kill For. Focusing on police officer Dwight McCarthy (Josh Brolin), he gets a unexpected visit from his former ex Ava Lord (Eva Green) who is looking to get away from her seemingly abusive husband Damien (Marton Csokas). When darker things start falling through the cracks, Dwight finds a new friend in loner Marv (Mickey Rourke) and they both investigate what’s really happening with Ava and Damien.

Who is Ava Lord and What Has She Done?[]

Ava Lord is a charming, sexy young female who calls her old husband, Dwight McCarthy when he enters his residence. Ava acts worried and concerned and wants to see him again. Dwight appears in a saloon to converse only to notice that she is late. Ava shows up in a elegant blue dress and smokes a cigarette. Ava explains that she can’t let Dwight go and he wants her to forgive her for her actions. Ava then kisses him and when Dwight refuses, Ava calls her guard Manute and promises to make Dwight remember her name before leaving in her car.

Ava manipulates Dwight into coming to her fancy house to snap photos of her swimming nakedly in the pool before he’s caught. Ava mockingly tells Dwight sorry before Manute pummels him and dumps him in the middle of the streets. Dwight enters his home only to find Ava in his bed demanding he have sex even if he wounds her. Ava seduces him with great perks and now she has him all to himself. Ava describes Manute and is angrily frustrated with her new lover Damien, who she plots to kill. Manute promptly hits Dwight so hard he gets sent out of the window and then Ava goes away to get her plan up and running.

Dwight hires Marv as muscle to storm in Ava’s place and figure out her scheme. Ava has Dwight brutally beat Damien to death and then she fires bullets onto Dwight while showing her depravity as a greedy sociopath wanting to get Damian’s loads of money/cash the whole time, intending to send Dwight plummeting off several stories. Surprisingly, Dwight survives thanks to Marv but he not only loses an eye, but a corkscrew goes to his chest.

Ava acts as a innocent victim as she pins the blame on Dwight for what happened to Damian. Ava huddles up to a detective as he describes what she says in detail. Ava gets a phone call from Lieutenant Mort and she wants him to come over for solace, Mort himself outright abandoning his loving family for her while she’s thinking about Dwight and how she needs to stop him for good.

Ava claims Dwight raped and nearly killed her before Mort fucks her. Ava then gets a strict warning about Dwight coming for his revenge and when Mort says it’s best to wait the long game, Ava threatens his life. Dwight interrogates Manute who at first believes that he was her lover. Manute simply gives out that Ava enslaves men like a seductive predator and then disposed of them when it was convenient, describing her as akin to a dark goddess. Ava then succeeds in having Mort shoot not only his loyal partner Bob, but also himself when it’s too much for the poor man.

Ava teams up with Alarich Wallenquist to marry him and also claim McCarthy’s life while Wallenquist subsequently warns that she needs to make a big score first, considering that she’s currently beneath him. Ava bathes when Manute brings McCarthy to her and compliments his skills, begging to want him back before Milo delivers a bomb that knocks Ava’s balance over. Ava then betrays Manute to save her own skin and quickly pumps lead onto his body before desperately weaseling words onto Dwight so that she can corrupt him further into her new partner-in-crime and even gives him a kiss on the lips before Dwight snaps out of it and then murders her while she can only stare at Dwight in one last look of shock before lying down and dying for good.

Heinous Standards?[]

Hoo boy, Sin City and it’s sequel have quite a lot of nasty villains in their repertoire:

Ethan Roark Jr./The Yellow Bastard claims three victims and is about to get a fourth, before being temporarily stopped by Hartigan who guns his arm and crotch off and then after his treatment he proceeds to rape and kill at least dozens of innocent ladies for eight years afterwards before getting back to Nancy and finishing what he has started, repeatedly whipping her angrily, getting his sick pleasures off of hearing his victims’ screams and even sending a finger to Hartigan in prison as a warning before threatening to cut her and then trying to beat Hartigan to death.Kevin meanwhile takes the heads of five girls, devours their bodies, and gets a sixth victim. Cardinal Roark does the same deeds on top of having his brother become the Senator which I’ll list further below, Jackie Boy regularly beats and threatens women, while Manute tries to enslave the women in Old Town and initiate a massacre beforehand with four innocent cops and has Gail tortured before trying to shoot her and Dwight to death, being unveiled in the past as a hitman for Ava Lord. Becky, one of the girls being the one to sell them out for cash. Senator Roark meanwhile revives Hartigan and fix his heart simply to make him suffer as he gets framed and sent to jail where he’s repeatedly beaten and threatens Nancy to keep quiet while in the sequel he’s revealed to be running illegal lotteries, has a ladies man named Johnny beaten and breaks his winning hand, then guns his leg to make him live in excruciating pain because he’s a illegitimate son of his, having his newfound love Marcie decapitated and her hands sliced off, displaying it in front of Johnny, mocking/taunting Johnny about his deceased mother being a whore, and when Johnny bests him, he ends his life, and in the future when Nancy gets the drop on him, he shoots her in the leg and prepares to make her scream before Nancy finally finishes him off, Joey is an abusive boss who nearly guns down his own girlfriend for not giving him enough credit, Wallenquist runs a enterprise, Wallenquist runs a trade… etc. Several characters go on a brutal rampage, such as Marv, Dwight, Gail, Miko, Hartigan, and Nancy but their victims deserve it.

Despite all of what I have said above? Ava still manages to clear it. She’s only got a few bodyguards plus Manute for the majority of her screentime yet it’s blunt that she has outright demolished dozens of lives before her (Manute has seen it multiple times to the point where he analyzes her as a higher being entirely), and the abundance of evidence such as her allowing Manute to take his time in punching and kicking Dwight around after coming back into his life, tricking Dwight into pummeling Damian into a bloody mess and then sadistically asking him what it feels like to take away an innocent’s life, forcing Mort to tear his family life apart just to get her attention which leads to him gunning his partner Bob down before pointing the weapon on himself and pulling the trigger, and coldly puts lots of gunshots to Manute before finally easing up to Dwight again so that she and him can be a nasty duo together. Ava has one of the highest body/kill counts in the flicks and her awfulness of slowly driving others into ruin is what makes her especially vile.

Mitigating Factors?[]

Ava, unlike the majority of the villains (Senator Roark loved Ethan, Jackie Boy despises racism, Cardinal Roark and Kevin have a good relationship with each other and the latter shows standards against rape which is why he allowed Hartigan to punish Ethan, Becky having a complicated relationship with her mother)? Completely lacks any. Beneath her friendly and remorseful mask, she’s in truth a cruel, selfish femme fatale more than willing to ruin so many lives for power. Ava pretends that Damian was abusing her but that quickly goes away once she convinces Dwight to end his life only so that she can get rich. Ava calling Mort affectionate names and even allowing him to have sex with her? Just a way to sway him into leaving his family behind and driving him into eventually committing suicide. Ava even goes the extra mile to fire rounds at her own trusted second-in command to play at Dwight’s heartstrings but all of it’s just to distract him so that she can tempt him into evil. Ava clearly relishes in her villainy as much as her looks as shown with how she tricks Dwight and Mort among many others into following along with her twisted desires.

Final Verdict?[]

A solid yes to this cunning bitch. Categopry:Finished Proposals
