I bring one more Ed Harris character to be confirmed as Pure Evil.

What is the work?[]

Snowpiecer is a post-apocalyptic fiction movie in which a global glaciation event decimated most of humanity and froze the entire planet, leaving only a small group of humans alive that was guarded in a huge bullet train, the Snowpierce, in which the society of remaining humans was divided into rigid castes. The people of the train's tail lived in conditions of extreme misery, slavery and poverty, while as the cars approached the engine, they were occupied by the wealthiest and most privileged, who lived decently. The conditions of misery and slavery to which the train's tail crew was subjected led to three revolts, until the biggest one seen in the film occurred, leading to the train's ruin and leaving only two survivors.

Who is he, what he did?[]

Wilford is the brain behind the Snowpierce, a megalomaniacal genius who was fascinated by locomotives since he was a child. He built Snowpierce to travel the longest railway in the world, which connected all continents. When the global glaciation catastrophe occurred, Wilford took the opportunity to play the role of "savior of humanity", safeguarding the remnants on the train. Although this seems a redeeming quality, it is all a megalomaniac complex of God. Wilford cared only for himself, not for humanity, because the rigid caste regime that governed society did not cause a large number of people to live inhumanly on the tail of the train, in extreme poverty, conditions of slavery, hunger and being subjected to torture, brutalities, loss of children, massacres for population reduction, mutilation and other social horrors.

Early in life on the train, the tail section went hungry for at least a month until they started serving them a gelatinous protein bar made up of insects. The short period of time in which the population of the tail starved was enough for acts of cannibalism to occur and to have to eat each other to avoid death from starving.

As for the other passengers, belonging to the most privileged parts of the train, was brainwashed by wilford, which started from childhood, so that they worshiped him as a God who saved humanity and submitted to him without questioning his system. Wilford showed up behind even the uprisings themselves, hiring the leader of the tail section to promote them, and use the uprisings as another method of population reduction, as well as to instill fear and put the most privileged against the people of tail.

The latest uprising, which is seen in the film, was so violent that it resulted in Wilford's soldiers killing even first-class passengers. During the revolt, he promotes numerous massacres in each section of the train, causing only the protagonist, an Eskimo and his daughter to reach the engine region alive. Upon arriving at the engine and coming face to face with Wilford, the protagonist Curtis discovers that the locomotive engine works the basis of the manual labor of children under 5 years old, children that Wilford employees took from their parents in the tail section and took them to the engine to be enslaved, while the most privileged children were taught from an early age to despise the inhabitants of the tail and worship Wilford as God. Wilford, apparently, not only alienated the most privileged population, but he also drugged several of his youths in a savage teenage party to take them out of them and turn them into aggressive zombie-like soldiers.

Mitigating factors[]

As explained, deep down, Wilford doesn't care about humanity, only that its system is maintained and it is recognized, promoting the repression of the poorest and the alienation of the most privileged. The good quality of life he gives to the most privileged is only so that they conspire in favor of his system and worship him as a God, due to his narcissism and megalomania. If Wilford was really considerate and did everything just for the sake of humanity, he would not only refuse to let people live in the conditions they live at the end of the train, but he would not insist on being worshiped as a God. Wilford did not think twice before subjecting the privileged class's own personnel to the violence of the revolts, since he unapologetically admitted that in each of these revolts there must be a limited percentage of losses from the most privileged classes, which he seems to regret as much as regrets the execution of the then leader of the syrup section who was his spy and that he demanded that he be killed using the justification that the privileged party had more losses than expected in the revolt and that the spy had to pay the price with his life. Any of Wilford's laments are the result of sheer falsehood. Like any narcissistic tyrant, Wilford only cared that the people served him. In the film, he also complains that the position he takes on the train's engine is inconvenient because of the noise and loneliness, but it is clear that such inconveniences cannot be compared to the horrors that he makes the inhabitants of tail pass, making his complaint sounds like debauchery.

Hideous standart[]

Submitting so many people to so many horrible things, from making them resort to cannibalism from starving to promoting massacres in their midst and leaving them living in conditions of misery and slavery, especially considering that it is in the section that most of the people live. remaining humans, while he enjoys the good and the best, besides promoting the revolts himself makes him quite hideous.

Final verdict[]

Despite being the apparent savior of humanity, Wilford revealed himself to be a megalomaniac, a social Darwinist, who promotes the disgrace of countless people and cares for no one else but himself and having anyone who adores him as a God-like figure. I confirm his presence in the Pure Evil category for all the misfortune he caused.
