Okay, so here it is: my first removal proposal. Ever. And, while I am aware that this candidate hasn't been proposed and approved by the community (and the Pure Evil category isn't in his article), I'll create this anyway because I don't want to see him in the category again. Meet Smaug.

Also, another reason why I'm making this removal proposal is to make up for a nasty fight I started in Smaug's talk page years ago (back when the "Pure Evil" category was called "Complete Monster"), and man, I was such a jerk.

Who is the Villain?[]

Smaug is the main antagonist of The Hobbit and a major antagonist of the Middle-earth franchise overall. He raided the dwarf kingdom of Erebor, forcing them to live in the Blue Mountains in the process. Because of this, Thorin Oakenshield plans with the help of Gandalf and Bilbo Baggins to reclaim Erebor. However, while Smaug is driven out, he burns down the nearby city of Laketown. However, Bard finds out about a weakspot in Smaug's armor, and shoots him down.

Why Doesn't the Villain Qualify?[]

Smaug is insufficiently heinous. While I do think he does pass the In-Story Standard for the limited resources he has (he's a dragon compared to Morgoth and Sauron because they are Ainur and more powerful), and he's the worst he can be with his resources, Smaug fails the General Standard because he's just your average town-burning, gold-hoarding, kingdom-raiding dragon you would expect to see, and his attempts aren't anything more than "kill the heroes". Even in Sir Peter Jackson's films where Smaug is portrayed as worse than his original counterpart with more ambition to kill the heroes, he's still a generic villainous dragon.

Final Verdict[]

With all of that said, Smaug is a non-qualifier. If he did at least one act this was uniquely vile overall, he would've qualified.
