What is the work?
TheHavesAndTheHaveNots is a prime time soap opera produced by Tyler Perry that airs on the Opera Winfrey Network.
It focuses on three dysfunctional families, two of which are upper class (the Cryers and the Harringtons), and a poor family (the Youngs).
Who is she?
Veronica Harrington is the rich, snobish, racist, homophobic, manipulative, controlling wife of David and mother of Jeffery.
What has she done?
- She regularly emotionally abuses her son Jeffery for being gay giving hateful speeches about how homosexuality is a punishment from God
- She one time fired Jeffery, froze his bank account and deprived him of a place to stay
- She blackmails Jeffery into dating women by threatening to frame him for a manslaughter
- Threatened to have Quincy's entire family killed if he doesn't follow her orders
- Ordering Quincy to beat Jeffery up if he doesn't disclose Candace's location to her
- Taking Jeffery's sperm in order to arrange for him to impregnate Melissa so he would be forced to marry her even though no interest in her
- She's made several attempts to kill her husband David due to suspecting him of having an affair. She's burned down his mansion while he was asleep, put a hit out on him to get him shot and has put bombs in his cars.
- Ordering an inmate to rape Wyatt while he was in prison
- She killed her husband's new girlfriend with a car bomb that was intended for him
Heinous Standard? Mitigating Factors?
Kind of high. No one on the show appears to be a saint. There are several murderers and rapists. Even the main characters have committed some questionable acts. That said, Veronica is the most evil. As unlike almost everyone else she never has any Pet the Dog moments or even a valid Freudian Excuse she is just a controlling bitch who thinks her family should live the life she wants them to live. She will not accept her son being gay and actively tries to "make" him straight no matter the extent. She sets wires on her husband to know what he's doing at all times and is willing to kill him if she suspects that he is having an affair.
All in all, she is the most hateable character in the show due to her self centered and narcissistic personality.
Verdict?
Her arc is ongoing, currently on the sixth season but she hasn't displayed the tinest bit of genuine remorse or compassion.
