~ V1 to a fleeing V2 in "Clair de Soleil", and its only lines in the game thus far. |
V1 is the main protagonist of the video game Ultrakill. It is a robot from a time after humanity has gone extinct, and it ventures into the depths of Hell in search of more blood to fuel itself. Along the way, it causes mayhem and anarchy, fighting against demons, angels, and other machines.
Biography[]
Past[]
V1 is a robot created during the final years of the Final War, but it was decommissioned after the New Peace since it became obsolete in the new prosperity. It is unclear what V1 did during the "great peace", with some theories suggesting that V1 was responsible for all the killing, while others claiming that it was only activated by desperate humans as a futile attempt to save themselves.
As the first machine in the V Model line, V1 was designed to engage in combat during the Final War, and it had a special exterior plating that allowed it to refuel itself by absorbing fresh blood. However, its production was halted during prototyping, as the New Peace was established. Meanwhile, a new V Series model, V2, begun developement, with more durability and less lethality than its predecessor, as it was intended to be used during peace (which did not last long, unfortunately). Humanity perished sometime after The Father disappeared, during The Machine Uprising (it is currently unknown if V1 participated in the annihilation of humanity). With no more fuel on Earth, the machines traveled to Hell using the gates that humanity had created when they tried to explore deeper.
Ultrakill[]
In search of more fuel, V1 acquired a weapon, the revolver, and began its journey to Hell to obtain more precious, precious heterogenous red human mixture. Early in its journey, V1 encountered another robot fighting for its own survival in the mouth of Hell, Swordmachine. V1 fought and defeated Swordmachine, destroying one of its arms and acquiring its second weapon, the shotgun. V1 would later encounter Swordmachine again in the same area, fighting it and later succesfully killing it. V1 continued its rampage and eventually reached the gates of Hell, where it faced two guardians, both called Cerberus. Defeating them easily, V1 entered Hell through the gate.
Arriving in Hell, V1 found the calm, serene, but evidently artificial environment of Limbo. Along its path, V1 fought various robots and demons, including flamethrower-wielding Streetcleaners and a massive scorpion-like demon called a Hideous Mass. V1 also found a powerful chaingun-like weapon called the Nailgun in Limbo, adding another weapon to its arsenal. Additionally, V1 found several engraved slabs that emitted a low grumble when pressed, which opened a secret room in a certain building in the deeper crevices of Limbo, providing V1 with an alternate, stronger version of the revolver, commonly known as the slab revolver. It was here where V1 first met and fought V2, who had also awakened during The Machine Uprising. V1 battled and overcame V2, who escaped and left its arm behind for V1 to use.
After entering the lust layer, V1 found a sprawling but dead city and encountered a machine called a Mindflayer, a threat almost on par with itself and V2's power. Here is where it also found another weapon, the electricity-channeling Railcannon, one of the most potent weapons in its arsenal. V1 then destroyed the massive corpse of King Minos, a titanic mindless husk that towered over buildings, created as a manifestation of his memorable soul after death, and left the Lust layer through an exit gate in the head of the then-immovable rotten object.
V1 would then confront Gabriel inside his "palace" in the Gluttony layer. Gabriel would be defeated and humiliated by V1, who vowed to exact revenge before fleeing. Upon returning to Heaven, Gabriel had The Father's light stripped from his body by The Council who were ashamed of his inevitable defeat at the hand of V1. This motivated him to descend into the layer of Heresy and prepare for a rematch.
Unaware of these events, V1 backtracked through the Gluttony layer one last time and stumbled upon a locked towering gate, guarding a curved spinal staircase. The door unlocked for V1, as he had slaughtered everything in the first three layers quickly and stylishly, deeming him worthy of continuing ahead. V1 descended through the staircase (or rather, by speedrunning way down the stage) with a lit torch and placed it on the pedestal that opened the final obstacle delaying its (possibly) impending doom, a door. Behind it, awaited a mindless spinning rhombohedron deity made of flesh and skin constructed by Angels. V1 destroyed the prison, freeing none other than King Minos who was long thought to be dead. Now a prime soul, Minos (now known as Minos Prime) sentenced V1 to death for its kind's crimes against humanity. V1 obliterated King Minos' prime soul once and for all, then proceeded further down to enter the Greed layer.
V1 fought its way through the Greed layer, finding clues about a rebellion against Heaven by a group led by King Sisyphus, and also evidence of a secret weapon. Journeying into a pyramid full of demons and husks, V1 eventually found this secret weapon, an alternate version of the Nailgun known as the Sawblade launcher. At the end of the Greed layer, V1 encountered V2, who was eager for revenge. For the second and final time, V1 fought and defeated V2. V2 tried to escape from V1 once more, but V1 chased it down the side of a pyramid and destroyed it for good, acquiring the Whiplash arm from V2's remains. V1 then descended deeper into Hell to the fifth layer, Wrath.
In the Wrath layer, V1 discovered the Ocean Styx, the result of the River Styx flooding from the mass influx of souls during the eradication of humanity. V1 traversed this ocean, commandeering a previously sunken ferry after killing its captain (or alternatively, paying him). V1 found a weapon called the rocket launcher inside the ferry, then discovered that the ferry was capsized by an unknown sea creature. Upon escaping the sunken ferry again, V1 made its way to the surface, discovering the creature that capsized the ferry, the Leviathan, a biblical entity recreated from the corpses at the ocean floor being crushed into a single mass under pressure. After killing the Leviathan, the Ocean Styx opened up, revealing the passage to the sixth layer of Hell: Heresy.
Within Heresy, V1 heard the voice of Archangel Gabriel, no longer holding the title of Judge of Hell but rather Apostate of Hate. Eager for revenge and motivated by hatred, Gabriel challenged V1 once again, now using his swords Justice and Splendor, which he neglected to use in their first fight. Upon being defeated by V1, Gabriel had a realization and said that he needed some time to think. Not caring in the slightest due to its protocol not stating anything about paying attention to insane men's post-defeat monologues, V1 proceeded further down into Hell to the layer of Violence.
Upon reaching Violence, V1 entered the Garden of Forking Paths, a twisting labyrinth meant to keep the sinners from escaping the layer. He manages to make way through the mannequin guards and towards a train system that takes him to the layer proper, but is attacked by the Minotaur and eventually kills him in a duel. He enters a recreation of the battlefield of the Last War, complete with landmarks, new machine combatants arriving in drop pods and gigantic equine-shaped machines called Earthmovers overseeing it. V1 prevails still, opening access deeper into the layer by delivering a bomb to the exit location. The new tunnel brings him to the forest of Suicides, where people who committed it are merged with trees and foes he have seen fight each other. V1 uses this to his advantage and presses on to the final part of the layer, where a gigantic Earthmover awaits him. The colossal machine attempts to kill him, but is distracted by the attack of another Earthmover, allowing V1 to scale it's body, fighting off minions it sends, security system and eventually reaching the brain, which he proceeds to destroy despite protective meausures. As the self-destruct protocol kicks in, V1 dashes towards the escape exit and manages to get off the Earthmover before it explodes. Satisfied at this victory, V1 proceeded deeper, into the layer of Fraud.
Powers and Abilities[]
V1 is capable of performing many different attacks and has a variety of weapons to choose from in its arsenal. V1 was designed to be a lightweight killing machine with wings that assist in its propulsion and serve as a holster for all of its weapons. V1's arsenal consists of a Revolver, an alternate Slab revolver, Shotgun, Nail-Gun, an alternate Sawblade launcher, Rail-Gun, and more recently, a Rocket launcher. All of these weapons have their own capabilities, such as firing electric beams and shooting coins that ricochet towards enemies. Some of these weapon capabilities also enable hidden techniques, like boosting the projectiles of the shotgun into explosive pellets by punching them or shooting coins with the Railcannon for an Ultraricoshot.
Powers[]
- Propulsion: V1 can move at absurd speeds with its powers to dash, slide and ground slam. These techniques are combined to reach unbelievable distances. It has mastered the ability to avoid oncoming attacks and can use its ground slam as an offensive advantage.
- Blood Absorption: Like the rest of its kind, V1 runs purely on blood to survive. However, V1's unique chassis and body plates allow it to fuel itself by coming in contact with fresh blood.
- Punching/Feedbacker: V1 can punch its target with exceptional force, instantly killing the smaller husks. It can also parry with its original arm by punching oncoming weaker attacks back at its enemies.
- Arm Insertion/Knuckleblaster/Whiplash: After stealing V2's arms from its first and second encounters, V1 can switch its arm with V2's original arm or another arm that V2 had stolen from another machine. V2's original arm can deliver a high power punch that blows away enemies with a violent blast and reloads like a shotgun which can not parry. The Whiplash can pull small enemies towards V1 or pull V1 to grappling points and heavy enemies.
- Intelligence in Combat: V1 was programmed with combat in mind and thus has the built-in ability to kick your sh*t before you can possibly think of doing the same to it. It is capable of pulling off extremely convoluted and complex techniques in battle such as boosting projectiles and using enemy mechanics against them.

Trivia[]
- Due to its head resembling a camera, V1 is often jokingly referred to as a camera by many members of the Ultrakill fandom, with nicknames such as "GoPro With Legs" and "Walking Nikon" being common.
- V1 is noticeably shorter than many of the entities residing in Hell, being dwarfed even by the diminutive and hunched Filth, However, Hakita has stated this is purely for gameplay reasons and not indicative of it's actual canonical height.
- Despite its small size, V1 is feared throughout Hell, with many machines considering it the biggest threat in the room at all times wherever it is involved. It is also said that blind enemies such as Filth and the Sisyphean Insurrectionists can sense it purely from its menacing aura.
- For some reason, V1 can still use the Terminals even with all arms unequipped.
- The canon explanation for the game's low-poly graphics is that V1 has reduced the resolution of its vision to conserve battery and save more energy for movement and fighting.
- While V1 is completely mute in-game, it is often voiced by the S.A.M voice program in skits from Gabriel's voice actor Gianni Matragrano, as well as V2, who is also occasionally voiced by Microsoft's Canadian text-to-speech voice, Microsoft Richards.
- As it's mentioned that V1's production began at the tail end of the Final War, when the Earthmovers were in use, it's implied that V1 was produced specifically to defeat these gargantuan machines, which it eventually does in the fourth level of Violence.
- Furthermore, it's stated that the Earthmovers are large enough to carry smaller machines inside themselves. With V1 being noticeably smaller than most other entities in game and extremely agile, this further implicates it as a machine meant to counter them.
- Unlike other bosses, the Earthmover’s health bar appears immediately upon entering the level without delay, further implying that V1 instinctively targeted the Earthmover to kill it.
- The Earthmover seemingly realises V1’s purpose as it quickly sounds an alarm upon its arrival.
- Despite being the main protagonist of the game, story-wise V1 is merely a plot device in Ultrakill, with its nemesis Gabriel being the main protagonist of the game's narrative.
- As the game's individual chapters are described as drives in the menu, it's speculated that V1 could be dead and the entirety of Ultrakill is merely a viewing of its memories by an unknown audience.
- It's been stated by Hakita that the lines of dialogue "You're not getting away this time" and "We'll need a bigger boom" are not said by V1 itself but are rather indicators to the player on what to do, possibly signifying its thoughts.
