~ V1 to a fleeing V2 in "Clair de Soleil".

V2 is the secondary antagonist in the video game Ultrakill. As an upgraded prototype of V1, V2 has every move that V1 can pull off, having been created to serve as the model machine made to serve a new, benevolent era for humanity. Originally seeking to get rid of V1 to remove any possible competition, V2 lost and was forced to flee, losing its arm in the process. It later returned in the Layer of Greed, seeking revenge for its missing arm.

He is labelled as a Supreme Machine, and debuts in Level 1-4, "Clair de Lune".

Appearance[]

V2, being the next in the "V" model line, mirrors V1's usual chassis, but in red as opposed to V1's blue. In his second battle, he replaces his severed limb with the "Whiplash", a muted-green arm that bolsters the technology of a grappling hook.

Biography[]

Originally constructed as a successor to the war-focused V1, the purpose of V2's model was to be a prototype for a new age of robots: one created to further the New Peace. As such, much of V2's functionality was planned to focus on work not directly tied to bloodshed, with some of V1's combat-oriented functionality (such as its power to heal itself by consuming blood) being replaced. However, due to its complex methods and cost of its construction, alongside a lack of interest from a far more peaceful society, the idea of a mass-produced line of V2s was scrapped in favor of using drones, leaving V2 as the sole robot of its type in existence.

After mankind was driven extinct, machines began to invade Hell en-masse in search of blood. Finding themselves at the mining facility their creators established prior to their downfall, what started as a simple desire for fuel became an all-out battle for control over the resource. Among the robots who managed to reign as supreme in this era, V2 managed to be especially capable to being dominant over its mechanical brethren, no thanks to its extreme skill in wielding firearms.

First being encountered in "Clair de Lune", the first glimpse the player gets of V1 occurs after they place down the first blue skull, sliding across the floor in front of them in search of foes to fight. After placing down the second blue skull and entering a closed-off section of the manor, V2 bursts into the room from a large stained glass mural, bowing to its adversary before beginning the fight. As a copy of V1, much of V2's abilities serve as direct parallels to their own, being capable of dashing through both the ground and the air, slide across the floor with incredible speed, and jump off of walls. In terms of attacks, V2's attacks the player with its own revolver (which he can fire both a burst of three shots), piercer revolver (which he uses to shoot out a singular, charged beam) and core eject shotgun (which he can either fire normally or throw its core forward to act as a bomb), using them exactly how the player normally uses these weapons. In addition to this, V2 can alternate between numerous "emotional states" depending on the player's actions in the fight, with this being telegraphed by the color of his "wings" changing. In particular, yellow wings appear as V2 continuously runs towards the walls of their area (only turning after he collides with them), blue wings appear as V2 tries to circle around the player in an attempt to get close to them, red wings appear as V2 tries to rush the player down directly, and green wings appear as V2 tries to gain distance from the player and himself. In addition, staying too far away from V2 for a period of time will cause V2 to become enraged, locking them into their red-winged state, increasing their movement speed, get up from their slides earlier to better pursue their target, and removing the cooldown on its piercer-based attacks. While these traits make V2 a formidable opponent for V1, the protagonist nevertheless manages to defeat its cold-blooded copy in combat. Having been damaged from their encounter, V2 escapes from the arena, albeit without its left arm. After this, the player is able to equip the lost appendage as the "Knuckleblaster", which trades some of the speed possessed by the default Feedbacker for the ability to generate shockwaves.

Having been left humiliated, mutilated, and vengeful, V2 continuously dove into later levels of Hell in pursuit of strong opponents, killing some of the machines wandering the infernal wastes to heal itself. To this end, V2 eventually managed to replace its severed limb with one of his foe's own, an arm with a built-in grappling hook known as the Whiplash. Finally strong enough to take on V1 once more, V2 next encounters its rival in "Clair de Soliel", lurking within a pyramid's throne room. Resting itself before the fight proper, V2 stands up to challenge V1 as he enters the room, cracking his knuckles before the fight begins. While V2's capabilities largely remain the same compared to its last encounter, its travels has gifted it the boons of two new weapons. Once again mirroring the player's own, these boons consist of a marksman revolver (which V2 uses after flicking three coins into the air to ricochet into the player), and a nailgun able to copy its default counterpart (by releasing a barrage of nails) and its Overheat version (which generates a far more potent blast). Despite this increased arsenal, V2 once again proves inferior to his original counterpart, forcing it to once again flee by crashing through one of the pyramid's walls. However, instead of being content to watch his opponent flee, V1 gives chase to its foe as they both race across the pyramid's side, firing at each other all the while. After depleting it health bar a second time, V2 is sent careening through the sky onto the stone floor below, the fall reducing it to little more than a red stain and a now-claimable Whiplash.

Trivia[]

  • As of present, V2 is the only major boss in Ultrakill to be in the Medium weight class, allowing it to be thrown into the air by nearby rocket launcher blasts.
  • While V2 should be capable of using the Knuckleblaster and Whiplash in their respective battles without issue, it was decided to not have V2 use his arms' full potential due to his fights already being complex in concept.
  • While V2 is intended to be fought in "Clair de Lune" after the player places down the two blue skulls, their fight can be triggered early if the player instead jumps through the stained glass window above the area's entrance, with this task being required to complete the level's challenge.
  • Through timing one's coin flips (which can be done using the marksman revolver) and punches correctly, it is possible to defeat V2 in "Clair de Lune" as he is bowing.
  • Hitting V2 with the Knuckleblaster in In "Clair de Soleil" will cause it to become instantly enraged.
  • In "Clair de Soleil", delivering a instantly-killing blow to V2 in while in its first phase will skip the slide down the pyramid entirely, instead warping both player and rival to the pyramid's base.
  • If the player shoots a coin into the air in "Clair de Soleil" and fails to shoot it down in time, V2 will make the incentive to shoot it down first, redirecting the coin towards V1.
    • However, the opposite is also true to V2's own coins, with the player being able to shoot his foe's monetary arsenal directly back at them.
