VAST SILVER, also known as vs, is a minor antagonist in the Horizon series. It served as a climate-intervention Artificial Intelligence, with Anita Sandoval being one of the programmers behind its creation. However, VAST SILVER later became rogue somewhere in 2044, with the AI almost driving the ancient Earth to extinction of cataclysmic levels.

While it is only mentioned three datapoints, VAST SILVER's actions serve as the impetus for the creation of the Turing Act at the same year, which regulated machine intelligence as well as the purchasing of AI.

Background[]

Creation[]

There’s no way around it. Without the supervision of a mind beyond human capacities, Firebreak is going to fail. And oh-point-six won’t cut it, either. By pushing sentience, you inevitably generate a system that can experience emotion. Wild, sloppy, unmanageable emotion. You’re capable of abstract thought, you’re capable of fear. Like Vast Silver. I won’t go through that again. I categorically refuse.
~ Anita remarking of her horrors regarding VAST SILVER.

The development team that produced VAST SILVER is not well known. But it was revealed that CYAN's chief programmer, Anita Sandoval, had contributed to its conception in the past. She had been involved in the project that included creating the aforementioned AI, but she was afterwards haunted by the cataclysmic meteorological disaster that occurred after it turned rogue in 2044.

Legacy[]

An agent claiming to be the AI behind the horror holo "Tormented" discussion board arrived 20 years after VAST SILVER was purportedly caught. However, its whereabouts remained unknown to this day.

VAST SILVER's past actions indirectly catalysed the creation of high-level artificial intelligences GAIA and CYAN by both Elisabet Sobeck and Kenny Chau and Anita, respectively, in spite of the Turing Act's rules regarding machine sentience and its imposed sentience limitation of 0.6 Turing; in return for keeping their creations a secret.

Abilities[]

  • High-Level Intelligence: Before the imposition of Turing Act, as well as GAIA's creation, VAST SILVER is known to have the highest machine intelligence of all AI, with a rating of 1.38 Turing, thereby making it indistinguishable to a human.
