NOTE: This article is about Vala from Smallville. For the Game of Thrones character see here.

Vala is a cloned member of the Kandorian Army and a supporting antagonist in the ninth season of the CW TV series Smallville. She appears in 4 episodes throughout the season.

She was portrayed by Crystal Lowe, who also played Mardola in Stargate Atlantis.

Biography[]

Past[]

On Krypton, Vala was the sister of Faora who specialized in cybernetic engineering and an M.D. in the Kandorian Army. She, like other Kandorians, donated a sample of her blood that was stored inside an Orb that would ensure Krypton's survival.

Season Nine[]

Vala was one of hundreds of Kryptonian clones created by the Orb when it was opened by Tess Mercer. Vala soon discovered that she lacked the powers, that Kryptonians would normally possess under a yellow sun. Wanting them, Vala and a few other clones began experimenting on deceased humans to find the answers they were seeking.

She experimented on two humans; Dr. Bernard Chisholm who was resurrected and Daily Planet reporter John Corben who was transformed into a cyborg through a kryptonite heart. Unable to find results, Vala and the other scientists abandoned the experiments.

Clark Kent and Chloe Sullivan created background information for Faora, Vala and several other Kandorians as they attempted to be integrated into human society. With access to a fake I.D. and passport, Vala used them to get a job at a bookstore in Metropolis. She met Faora and Clark outside the store who she called Kal-El because she was not use to human names.

Faora believed their lives would be better if they had their powers. Vala, on the other hand, waved the matter aside, as she knew Clark would always be there to protect them and the humans. Faora warned Vala not to get her hopes up about Clark as he was in love with a human. Faora invites Vala out for coffee after she closes up the bookstore. Vala got her keys from the counter when the front door opens, but Vala saw no one.

After locking up, Vala saw a masked man who kidnapped her and put her to sleep before she could escape. When Vala wakes up, she is imprisoned in a container, wearing just her underwear, along with two other Kandorians. Vala was still imprisoned by her captor, who treated her and their fellow Kandorians as guinea pigs. He knows she is an alien, even though she vehemently denies it. He began cryogenically freezing her so that he could expose her along with his other evidence.

Vala was horrified by the severed arm with a Kandorian tattoo he showed her and screamed for the man to stop but he went on to hack the other Kandorian. Vala was still slowly freezing when Chisholm brought in a captured Lois Lane to his lair. Lois was horrified to see Vala in her position and orders Chisholm to release her but Bernard insists Vala is an alien. When Bernard states Vala and her kind saved his life, Lois said he should be grateful, not harming her but Chisholm disagreed.

Later Zod managed to track down Vala's location and found Lois. Lois tells him that only one survivor remains, pointing to a plastic curtain. Zod investigates and finds Vala, who he tries to free just as Chisholm returns. Vala was eventually saved by Clark who removed her from her frozen prison and covered her with a blanket and heat lamps to warm her.

Vala and Faora later chose to break away from Zod and his fascist ways, choosing to live peacefully among the humans. However, when Checkmate found them, she was to be executed with the group of soldiers she was with, but saved by Clark. After Faora's death, Vala re-joined Zod at the Fortress of Solitude where she drank his blood gaining Kryptonian abilities and pledged her allegiance to him. When Clark showed up, Vala, with her newfound powers, flew away with the rest of the Kandorians.

Later, Clark asked Vala what she knew about the Book of Rao, but she was hesitant to tell him, for she thought he murdered Faora. He asks her if Zod has the Book of Rao and why it is so important. Vala explained that the Book could finish their lives on Earth and that Zod can't find it because someone named Red Queen blocked all his moves. Clark asks her if she knows who the Red Queen is, and Vala replies that it was Tess Mercer. During the Kandorians attack on Earth, Vala burned Zod's symbol all over the world; she personally left Zod's mark on one of the Pyramids of Egypt at Giza.
