Valerie Phelan is a fictional character and supporting antagonist of the British soap opera Coronation Street, appearing as a minor antagonist from 2013 to 2014.

In her characterisation, Valerie is the first wife of the villainous Pat Phelan who is partially unaware of the extent of his true nature.

She was played by Caroline Berry.

Biography

Prior to 1998, Valerie Phelan was born under an unknown surname and grew up to become a nail tactician and stylist who soon owned a nail clinic called "Nail Chic by Valerie".

It was then she became acquainted with illegitimate businessman Pat Phelan and they got married in Weatherfield from 1998. However, their marriage soon underwent problems just before 2013 when Phelan proved to be unfaithful due to having engaged in a number of infidelities behind her back. At one point, he cheated on Valerie with a prostitute at a nightclub that was claimed to have happened years ago when the subject was brought up. Nevertheless, Valerie remained being Phelan's wife at the time.

By October 2013, Phelan was bankrupt and his wife owned all of their assets. Soon enough Valerie was visited by Phelan's acquaintance Owen Armstrong, a local builder and the landlord of Weatherfield who is owed £4,000 from Phelan due to doing a job for the latter and not receiving payment. When confronted over her husband's debt, Valerie explained to Owen that Phelan was bankrupt. After being unable to get his repayment from Phelan personally, Owen resolved to stealing his motorbike with the help from his protégé Gary Windass. Later on Phelan confronted Owen and threatened to report him to the police, but Owen eventually forced Phelan to repay his debt by threatening to tell Valerie and the authorities about his "shady" past.

Soon afterwards, Phelan sought revenge against Owen and Gary by forging them into a business partnership. He later shares the idea with Valerie, who is unaware of his true intentions, and they visit them at their house in December 2013 with a proposition: Phelan pitched the idea of a flat conversion and wanted Owen to financially front the project due to the fact that he was bankrupt. Owen eventually agreed to the idea and start a business partnership with Phelan in 2014, during which the latter and Valerie would treat the family to numerous meals together.

However, unknown to Valerie at that point, Phelan began perusing Owen's lover and Gary's mother Anna Windass as part of his revenge scheme against them. Soon enough Phelan tried to force himself on Anna, which in turn caused a chain of events that resulted in Gary - upon finding out what Phelan did to his mother - to confront Phelan at the worksite and be provoked into punching him that led to the pair fighting until Gary knocked out Phelan with a plank of wood. Later on, Valerie confronted Gary and Owen over her husband's whereabouts due to him missing their wedding anniversary.

Phelan soon resurfaced and, having staged the incident with CCTV footage capturing the incident, used it to blackmail Owen and Gary into working for him without receiving any profit whatsoever. Phelan's blackmail lasted for several weeks before Anna decided to contact Valerie to put a stop to everything. Anna told Valerie that her husband made advances on her, but Valerie disbelieved her and even accused Anna of bringing it on herself before leaving the house. When Anna confronted Phelan in person to plead with him to stop, he agreed on the condition that she sleep with him. Anna reluctantly agreed and met Phelan at the Dunford Hall Hotel; thereupon the pair slept together, with Phelan practically raping Anna as a result of the blackmail.

A few days later, Phelan visited Anna and her family to tell him he was ending their torment under the guise that Anna approached his wife and that Valerie convinced him to stop. Thereafter Phelan left the country with Valerie and the pair moved to Dubai. Months later, after the family underwent financial bankruptcy due to Phelan's actions, he sent the family a taunting postcard to gloat his victory even further. But soon enough Valerie finally learned the truth about her husband and divorced him. Since he was bankrupt, she kept all of their money and assets - thus leaving Phelan with nothing; Phelan later denounced Valerie as a "cow of a wife" for this. Valerie was never seen again.

In 2016, Phelan returned to the street and became acquainted with Anna's new boyfriend Kevin Webster. It was then Phelan made up a story about how Valerie was an adulterous golddigger who fleeced him for everything. When he and Anna came face to face again, Phelan told her how Valerie was partly the reason he was back in Weatherfield due to their divorce and how she took all of his financial security from him. Phelan later started a relationship with local resident Eileen Grimshaw. When he attempted to turn her against Anna to stop the latter from exposing the truth about him, Phelan clarified that his marriage with Valerie lasted for 17 years and that it was "not exactly a passionate one". He also tricked Eileen into believing that Anna is partly the reason why his marriage with Valerie ended over her and Owen.

From then onwards, Valerie has never been heard about again - it also remains unaware if she knew about Phelan's subsequent marriage with Eileen or the follow-up events in which Phelan kills four people and terrorizes Anna's neighbourhood before she finally killed him to end his reign of terror once and for all.
