Vance Maximus, Renegade Starsoldier, is a major antagonist in the Season 3 episode "Vindicators 3: The Return of Worldender" of the animated sitcom Rick and Morty and the deuteragonist of its 2022 prequel web series Vindicators 2.
He is a member of the Vindicators, a group of evil superheroes. Like Supernova, he seems to be one of the leaders of the group and uses his position to get away with his crimes. In his official TV show appearance, he ends up being trapped in a Saw-like game designed by Rick Sanchez out of jealousy that Morty was paying more attention to them then him. He ended up being the first victim out of the Vindicators, though his death was more deserved than the others.
He was voiced by Christian Slater, who also voiced Mr. Robot and Edward Alderson in Mr. Robot, Jason Dean in Heathers, Jimmy Dolan in Dolan's Cadillac, Deadshot in Suicide Squad: Hell to Pay, Special Agent Slater in Archer, Michael Griffin in Hollow Man 2, Composite Santa Claus in Robot Chicken, Robert Boyd in Very Bad Things, and Richard Quinn in Chupa, Rand Ridley on Inside Job and J.D. in Heathers.
Biography[]
Not much is known about Vance's early life except for the fact that he lived on Earth and was supposedly beaten by his father. At some point he would join the Vindicators.
Vindicators 2[]
He is present in a meeting with the other Vindicators where they are discussing on ways to defeat Doom-Nomitron. Alongside everyone except Supernova, he raises his hand when his teammates suggest that they just ask Rick to help defeat Doom-Nomitron.
He, along with his teammate Supernova had destroyed an enemy alien species on the planet Dorian-5. Upon seeing an unnarmed soldier on the brink of death, Supernova suggests to give him a mercy kill. Vance says there is no point to doing so at first but then decides he wants to kill the soldier himself. He shows some anger when the soldier dies before he gets the chance to kill him. When Supernova's water suddenly broke, she prompted Vance to go back to their spaceship and, right after that, her body absorbed the energy it had given to the unborn child, which caused an explosion that obliterated the whole planet she was in.
He was later made aware when Supernova killed three of their other teammates in a drunken mishap. Vance helped Supernova cover up these atrocities (by luring away an murdering a bartender who witnessed the scene) and decided to continue their crimes and do whatever they want.
"Vindicators 3: Return of Worldender"[]
In the end, they were called back for a third crusade to stop the genocidal Worldender. However, they learn during the assignment that Rick had gone on a drunken frenzy the previous evening and killed Worldender and all of his goons while putting up a Saw-like death game to disprove the Vindicators' superiority over everyone else during his blackout. During this, Vance gives in to his anxieties and reveals who he really is: an anxious neurotic who cracks under stress. He bluntly acknowledged that Morty's inclusion was only possible because he is "the learning disabled kid we do photo ops with."
Personality[]
On the surface, Vance is a kind, lovable, and charismatic superhero who drinks for fun. In actuality, he is a highly egotistical supervillain who cares about nothing other than his own image. He stands out for having the least morality out of all of his teammates, even Supernova. While not as heinous as Supernova herself, he is more than willing to kill anybody to hide the truth of her crimes. He appears to take high sadism in killing as he along with Supernova have fun killing a bunch of aliens in Dorian 5 and he jokes about an innocent bartender he murdered to hide Supernova's actions.
He is a bit of a misogynist as when he mainly only talks to female members of his team and when he sees the dead corpses of Diablo Verde, Calypso and Katana, he says it's a shame they had to go because they were hot. In his speech to the other vindicators, he suggests that by "stopping the bad guys", they will be rewarded and women will offer them their firstborns. He is an immense jerk too. He is under the belief that Morty is a mentally disabled child, claiming the only reason he gave him a jacket is too boost their image. He is seemingly someone who believes in his own lies and uses them as an excuse to commit his sadistic acts of violence.
Trivia[]
- He can be seen as a loose reference to both Marvel heroes Tony Stark/Iron Man as well as Peter Jason Quill/Star-Lord, who are both charismatic de facto team leaders that use jetpacks.
