The Vanguard is a minor antagonist and the tutorial boss of Demon's Souls, as well as its 2020 remake of the same name.
Biography[]
The Vanguard is a powerful demon created by the Old One, tasked with leading other demons in raids. At some point in the past, the Vanguard invaded and took control over the Forlorn Outpost. It can be found in the tutorial section during the Slayer of Demons' first expedition of Boletaria, within a circular room at the center of the outpost. It is weakest to magic and fire attacks.
The Vanguard attacks by swinging its axe at the Slayer of Demons or by flying upwards in the air before slamming back down. The attacks can be dodged by walking or rolling quickly to the side or away from the Vanguard. Due to the player's character being at their weakest, the Vanguard takes fractional damage from their attacks while its attacks are strong enough to kill the player in only one or two hits. Dying to the Vanguard results in the player being taken to the Nexus, preventing access back to the outpost until New Game Plus. But if the player manages to down the Vanguard, they are awarded with the Grey Demon's Soul and access to the Unknown Egress, where they can loot several soldiers' bodies before being killed by the Dragon God.
The Vanguard can later be found again within 4-1 of the Shrine of Storms as an optional miniboss. It features the same attacks as before, but is oddly unable to move, leaving it vulnerable to ranged weapons or magic. Killing it makes it drop another Grey Demon's Soul, and it will not respawn after defeat.
Appearance[]
The Vanguard is a large obese demon with spikes all over its legs, arms, and back. It has a pair of small wings on its back. It has a short tail. Its hands comprise of claws while its feet are short and stocky. On its head are three glowing eyes, two horns, and a mouth filled with large fangs.
The remake slightly changes its appearance. Several tentacle-like tendrils can be seen coming from its belly and its head has several orange scars. Its arms have broken handcuffs on them while its chest has metal chains hanging from plates.
