Varcolac Squadron, formerly known as Rigel Squadron, are a group serving as the secondary antagonists of the video game Ace Combat: Joint Assault. Starting out as some of the finest Martinez Security PMC pilots, they defected to the terrorist organization Valahia after being tempted with higher wages for their service and developed a rivalry with their former comrades from Antares Squadron.
History[]
Joint military show near Midway Islands[]
Members of Rigel Squadron, Milosz Sulejmani, Daniel Oruma, Faryd Gaviria and Tolya Kiriakov, all joined Martinez Security prior to 2011. They participated in a joint military show with the United States Navy's Seventh Fleet and Japan Self-Defense Forces alongside another M42 Squadron, Antares, in the Midway Islands. When the show came under attack by the Valahia terrorists, which was repelled, Rigel and Antares were redirected to Tokyo, which was under Valahia's attack.
Defending Tokyo and defection[]
The two squadrons defended the city, forcing Valahia to retreat, but during the terrorists' second assault on Tokyo, Rigel Squadron was contacted by their leader, Colonel Nicolae Dumitrescu, who offered them to join his cause in exchange for more money than Martinez ever offered them. The pilots agreed, leaving the battlefield and abandoning Antares Squadron to fight alone.
Joining Valahia and combat against Antares[]
Now part of Valahia and rechristened as "Varcolac Squadron", the traitors confronted Antares Squadron on a few occasions, most notably over the Croatian Adriatic Sea and Serbian mountains, but never managed to shoot them down, and were even forced to retreat once. Eventually the two squadrons fought over Valahia's primary stronghold in Central Asia, where the Varcolacs let it spill that the European businessman Andre Olivieri was the true culprit of the conflict. Sulejmani was ultimately shot down, soon after followed by his wingmen, but all four survived.
Joining Golden Axe Plan Private Army and the battle of San Francisco[]
Sulejmani eventually met up with Olivieri and revealed to him that Martinez Security knew about his involvement in the Valahia crisis. Olivieri ordered him to eliminate Antares Squadron. Varcolac Squadron was thus incorporated into Olivieri's Golden Axe Plan Private Army and given new GAF-1 fighter planes. They confronted Antares Squadron during the battle of San Francisco, only to be defeated by them once and for all.

Milosz Sulejmani was Varcolac Squadron's lead pilot, holding the rank of Captain. Sold by his parents at a young age, he became a child soldier and learned to value the money he earned for fighting more than anything.
Daniel Oruma[]

Daniel Oruma was Varcolac Squadron's ground attack specialist, and thus favored attack planes. In spite of his greedy and treacherous nature, he cared for his squadmates and was distraught to see them go down, as well as being nice to Antares.
Faryd Gaviria[]

Faryd Gaviria, aka El Macho, was Varcolac Squadron's interception specialist, and as obsessed with taking down Antares Squadron as Sulejmani was. Nevertheless, he cared for Oruma and seemed to be close with him, as they often flew in pair.
Tolya Kiriakov[]

Tolya Kiriakov was Varcolac Squadron's dogfighting master, holding the rank of Lieutenant. Other than specializing in air-to-air combat, he claims to see nothing exciting about air-to-ground missions. Unlike Oruma and Gaviria, he didn't seem to hold any care or respect for other pilots in his squadron, and even mocked Sulejmani for getting shot down.

- Rigel is named after the brightest star in the constellation Orion and is the sixth brightest star in the sky.
- Varcolac is named after the eponymous Romanian myth of a demonic werewolf.
- Although the squadron members' nationalities were never stated, Oruma is speculated by fans to be Japanese American, while Kiriakov is considered Russian.
- Prior to acquiring GAF-1 Varcolac, all Varcolac Squadron's members flew various aircraft corresponding with their preferred fighting style.
- Sulejmani flew F/A-18E Super Hornet before acquiring MiG-1.44 Flatpack.
- Oruma flew Tornado IDS before acquiring A-10A Thunderbolt II.
- Gaviria flew MiG-29A Fulcrum before acquiring MiG-31B Foxhound.
- Kiriakov flew Su-27 Flanker before acquiring Su-37 Terminator.
- In Ace Combat Infinity, the logo of the Varcolac Squadron makes an appearance in the briefing screen before Operation Eternal Liberation, as one of the squadrons being part of Task Force 118. Ironically, Antares Squadron is also shown as part of Task Force 118.
