The story of Vecna from Stranger Things.

Childhood[]

Life in Nevada[]

HenryCreel1

Henry when he was young.

Henry Creel was born in 1947 in Rachel, Nevada. He was the son of Victor and Virginia Creel as well as the younger brother of Alice Creel. His father was a World War II veteran who started a family to forget the horrors lived during the war. One day, Henry would spot a cave structure with his spyglass, then decide to explore it. While exploring, Henry discovered bits of scientific apparatus that had been taken from the Nevada Experiment while exploring. Henry and the scientist who had stolen the technology were briefly taken to Dimension X when the gadget suddenly triggered, killing the scientist in the process. Henry saw glimpses of strange creatures and was exposed to the influence of the Mind Flayer in the parallel universe known as Dimension X. He would end up being traumatized from the experience, while having gained new psychic powers as well as frequently suffer from hallucinations. He would become an outcast upon returning home, by other kids and even his own family.

New Start in Hawkins[]

In 1959, the Creel family - consisting of Victor, Virginia, Henry and Alice Creel - move to a new home in Hawkins, Indiana. Henry is tormented, mentally disturbed and in possession of remarkable psychokinetic abilties. Henry struggles to make friends upon joining Hawkins High School; despite that, he quickly forms a connection with Patty Newby, daughter of the school principal. Patty convinces Henry that his powers are not evil, and that he should be able to control them and use them for good. Henry creates a "vision" for Patty, where she can express herself through song while being supported by everyone around her. They form a romantic bond, meeting each other every day after school, and eventually kiss. Meanwhile, Joyce Maldonado attempts to put on a school production of Dark of the Moon.

While at the attic alone, Henry is overcome by the influence of the Mind Flayer - his mind enters what he calls "the battlefield", from where he proceeds to kill several animals, including Claudia Yount's cat Cloudy. Henry becomes haunted by visions of a humanoid monster; he is terrified that he will be made to kill Patty. Following this, Patty's adoptive brother Bob teams up with Joyce and her friend James Hopper Jr. to investigate the animal killings.

Patty convinces Henry to use his powers to track down her biological mother. As he does this, and while inside the void, he loses control and is once again possessed by the Mind Flayer. This frightens Patty, and when her father walks in and witnesses the scene, he is attacked and almost killed (by Henry controlled by the presence). Patty is able to encourage Henry to fight back by telling him that she believes he is good and that she loves him. Henry responds that he loves her too and is able to end the situation, but not before Patty's father is blinded and seriously injured. Mr. Newby is sent to the hospital, and Henry's mother Virginia sends Henry to Dr. Martin Brenner. It is revealed that she was supplied with drugs by Brenner; under the influence of these drugs, Virginia told Brenner everything about her son. When Mr. Newby wakes up, he tells Patty that Henry saved him from the monster. Mr. Newby draws a picture of the shadowy entity on a piece of paper and gives it to his daughter.

Brenner takes Henry to Hawkins National Laboratory, where the two discuss the past. It is explained that Brenner's father was the sole survivor of the USS Eldridge experiment, who returned to the normal world with significant injuries and a unique blood type; the elder Brenner later revealed the truth about these events on his deathbed. Dr. Brenner later established the Nevada Experiment, an attempt to reproduce what had happened to the Eldridge. One of Brenner's fellow scientists defected and stole key technology and transported it to a Nevadan cave. At this time, a very young Henry and the Creels lived nearby, in Rachel, Nevada. While exploring the Nevadan caves and playing with a spyglass, Henry stumbled upon the stolen technology when it unexpectedly activated, transporting him and the defecting scientist to Dimension X; there, he was exposed to the influence of the shadowy entity. Upon returning home, Henry's personality was forever changed, and he too possessed unique blood. Brenner was later able to track Henry down due to him dropping his spyglass in the caves.

Henry, using a sensory deprivation chamber, shows Brenner a humanoid creature through the Void. Brenner sees this creature displayed on a screen, and Henry convulses. Brenner then tries to force Henry to kill a prisoner, but Henry breaks down and ends up stabbing two guards. After this, Henry tells Brenner that he can let him go. Brenner understands that the boy is devoted to someone and therefore cannot kill; later Brenner realizes that this person is Patty and vows to find and kill her.

Turning to the Dark Side[]

Due to the Mind Flayer's influence, Henry began developing an extremely misanthropic and nihilistic worldview, believing that humanity was a scourge upon nature and that he would be cruel for enabling them to sustain deeply unnatural structures. He had never wanted to be part of what he called society’s "mindless play" of eating, sleeping, working, reproducing and dying. His doctors and therapists, correctly fearing that he was beyond help, recommended that the family relocate to Hawkins, Indiana for a fresh start, which they did after Virginia's great-uncle passed away, leaving them a "small fortune" to purchase a manor there.

Life in the Creel Mansion[]

Over time, Henry became obsessed with the black widow spiders in his house due to them being lonely and misunderstood like him. He also began to realize he had psychic powers, being able to move objects telekinetically and enter minds. He started out by using his powers to torture and mutilate animals, leaving the carcasses outside for his family to find, before upgrading to invading their minds, giving them horrifying visions and nightmares. Hence, he realized he didn’t have to be a productive member of society and was delighted, in an exceptionally messed up way, that he could possibly have the last laugh with the humans.

Eventually, Victor came to the conclusion that their house was haunted by a demon, while Virginia realized the truth and decided to have Henry sent off to a mental institution, which Henry believed to be ridiculous, since in his warped view, he was sane and everyone else was off their rocker. Acting quickly, he let the Mind Flayer take control and brutally murder his mother and sister, twisting their limbs and gouging out all four of their eyes. He tried to do the same to his father by making him relive his traumatic experiences during the war in which he served. But Henry was still a vulnerable little child after all, and he had no idea it was overexerting his powers, and so he also collapsed and passed out, entering a coma. Victor was arrested for his son's crimes and sent to an asylum due to his ramblings about a demon in their house. He remained unaware that it was Henry the one behind his house's haunting, believing that his son had perished at the hands of the demon as well. Henry certainly would have been delighted to know his father had become psychologically broken like his son.

Henry was secretly abducted by the Hawkins Laboratory and unwillingly faked his death. Dr. Martin Brenner, the doctor that Virginia had contacted to check on Henry, tried to perform experiments on him and control him, but after repeated failures, Brenner gave up and started using his DNA to create more psychics like him, including Eleven. Brenner also put a chip in Henry's neck that would track him and obstruct his powers.

Coming of Age and Working at Hawkins Laboratory[]

He found strength in a memory from his past, something that made him sad but also angry.

Henry as Experiment 001.

After being forced to become a guard for the lab, Henry met Eleven and began mentoring her, telling her to use her rage and grief to unlock her full potential. Henry began to turn Eleven against Brenner, telling her the truth about her mother and tricking her into thinking that Brenner wants the other psychic children to kill her. Henry discreetly gives Eleven a keycard, allowing her to meet up with him in the lab's boiler room, where Eleven offers to remove the chip in his neck so they can escape together. After she does so, Henry regains his powers and kills some security guards, before leaving Eleven in a closet and telling her to wait for him.

Desiring to subvert any and all competition to his premature reign, Henry proceeds to go on a murderous rampage throughout the laboratory, killing all the other test subjects and various Hawkins Lab personnel, ambushing Six when he and Dr. Ellis were training in the former's room and killing both of them. Two orderlies, Peter and Alec, activate the alarm and reported back to Dr. Brenner before shooting their firearms at Henry, to no avail as he strikes them down. Realizing Dr. Brenner was going to intervene, he promptly slammed the door into him, ending Ten's life in the process. He had little trouble accomplishing his malevolent endeavor, as his rampage came across as a complete surprise and several of the children screamed in terror, too horror-struck to use their powers to defend themselves, let alone fight back. He storms into the Rainbow Room with an animalistic snarl and brutally makes Five and Seven bleed to death along with two other children, leaving Two for last. And despite telling Eleven to wait for him, she understandably tries to intervene with whatever horror was being unleashed as soon as the alarm started blaring, and so she entered the Rainbow Room and watched in horror as Henry was torturing and killing Two, gouging his eyes out with sadistic relish. Whether owing to Two's ability to temporarily fight back or to One's sadistic pleasure, his nose finally begins to bleed as he finished killing him. Eleven tried to flee, but Henry trapped her by telekinetically sealing the doors. He explains himself to Eleven, telling her of his convoluted origins, twisted fascination with black widow spiders, and his nihilistic philosophy.

He asks her to join him in his goal to "reshape" the world, but Eleven rejects him, unable to harm innocent people on the basis of a psychopath's ravings and having lost all of her liking for him as soon as he began being blunt about how evil he was. Henry and Eleven get into a telekinetic duel, in which Henry gains the upper hand, preparing to make Eleven his final kill within Hawkins Laboratory. But after tapping into her traumas and rage, Eleven regains control and defeats Henry, sending him through the very first gate into the Upside Down, with the gate closing immediately afterward.

Alliance with the Mind Flayer[]

Mind Flayer Fog

Henry meeting the Mind Flayer.

Falling through the Upside Down, Henry is struck by lightning, scarring his skin and burning his white clothing to rags, before landing in the Upside Down, believing at first to be Purgatory. Henry explored another mysterious realm, with an unknown relationship to the area with the parallel planes. It was mountainous and rugged, but consisted of a singular plane, and possessed a gold-brown sky full with floating boulders. Believing the realm represented Earth as it would be for the better without people walking on it, he explored it for many months, until he found an enormous cloud made out of particles, and therefore he used his powers to reshape the cloud into a being who is "the predator he was always born to be”, an extension of himself. Hence, as his powers greatly expand, the mutilated nihilist morphs into a form no longer recognizable as human, much to his sick and twisted delight. He then joined the Mind Flayer's hive mind, and his psychic powers become greatly expanded.

After the Mind Flayer's previous defeat, Henry decides to take matters into his own hands and establishes a psychic connection with several teenagers in Hawkins: Chrissy Cunningham, a cheerleader; Fred Benson, an aspiring reporter and Nancy Wheeler's sidekick; Max Mayfield, a member of the Party; and Patrick McKinney, a basketball player and the friend of Jason Carver, who witness the murders and attempted to find the truth.

Starting with Chrissy, Henry invades her mind, tormenting her with visions of her abusive mother, before killing her. The murder rips a hole into Hawkins, creating a new gate. Henry then repeats the process with Fred, this time showing him visions of a car accident that killed someone that was with him. Following these two murders, Dustin Henderson nicknames him "Vecna", after a Dungeons & Dragons character with similar powers.

Vecna1

Vecna in his lair

Dustin, Max and Lucas Sinclair begin investigating Vecna along with Nancy Wheeler, Steve Harrington, Robin Buckley and Eddie Munson, the latter of whom was accused of Chrissy's murder. Vecna attempts to invade Max, but she flees, accidentally entering Vecna's mind in the Upside Down. Trapped in his domain, Vecna attempts to kill her, until the rest of the group realize that music can break Vecna's spell (which Nancy and Robin learned from the imprisoned Victor) and use Max's favorite song to help free her.

Opening the Gates[]

Max draws Vecna's domain, which Nancy recognizes as the Creel house, unaware that it's actually Vecna's childhood home. As the group looks through the Creel house, Vecna claims Patrick as his next victim, causing the group's flashlights to short out. After realizing Patrick's murder took place at the same time, they come to the conclusion that Vecna is using the Creel house in the Upside Down as his base of operations.

The group tracks down one of Vecna's gates, located at the site of Patrick's murder. However, Vecna pulls Steve into the gate, with Nancy, Robin, and Eddie following after him. Vecna uses his minions, a race of Demogorgon-like bats to stalk them as they attempt to find another way back.

Dustin and Lucas realize that Vecna is likely the Mind Flayer's "general", and is opening up gates to allow their old nemesis to invade Hawkins once more. Dustin, Lucas, Max, and Lucas' sister, Erica, contact the other half of the group through a series of lights, and instruct them to go to the Upside Down's equivalent of Eddie's trailer, which is where Chrissy died. There, the two groups find a gate, and Eddie and Robin pass back into Hawkins. However, Vecna invades Nancy's mind before she and Steve can get through.

Vecna torments Nancy with Barbara Holland's corpse and forces her to relive the night of her death before Nancy escapes. Much like Max, Nancy finds herself in Vecna's mind, seeing his past and realizing that he is Brenner's first experiment. Vecna eventually lets Nancy leave his trance, but only so that she can warn the Party and Eleven.

Max along with Lucas and Erica and rest of the Party decide to bait Vecna into attempting to kill Max again, so that Steve, Nancy, Robin can enter the Creel House in the Upside-Down and kill him. Similarly, Dustin and Eddie decide to distract the Demobats so that the trio can safely enter the Creel House. For that purpose, Max and Lucas enter the Creel House where Max discusses with Vecna how she wanted Billy dead due to being abusive towards her, and feels immense guilt and self-loathing after the Mind Flayer killed Billy while trying to protect Eleven, during which Vecna appears as Lucas and calls her out for wishing death on her step-brother, and decides to kill her.

Meanwhile, Vecna tricks the rest of the team into believing he is not noticing them, as he laid a trap for them. As soon as Robin triggered the trap in the Creel mansion, he reveals to Max that he indeed has noticed all of them coming to the Upside Down to kill him, as well as commanding the Russian Demogorgon to kill Hopper, Joyce and Murray.

Simultaneously, while Hopper, Joyce, Murray, Yuri Ismaylov and Dmitri "Enzo" Antonov were about to escape the Soviet prison, they discover there's more demogorgon specimens other than the Soviet Demogorgon and they enter a room where they see several sleeping demodogs in tanks, and they also see a major tank with a large piece of the Mind Flayer trapped in it. Eventually, the Russian soldiers break the tanks in an attempt to defeat the adult demogorgon which Warden Melnikov has been using to eat prisoners, releasing both the Mind Flayer particles and the demodogs.

Vecna was about to kill Max, but Eleven intervened in the very moment. However, even she recently got her powers back, she’s still no match for Vecna, because of the years he spent on the Upside Down made him stronger. He knocked out Max when she tried to help Eleven.

Therefore, he used his powers to sent Eleven to his mindscape, and took Max’s unconscious body to one of the pillars of his fortress. Before he could finish his kill, Eleven reveals to Vecna that Dr. Martin Brenner died, even to the point of sympathizing with him for all the pain Brenner brought to him, thus making him into who he is now, even calling Brenner the monster, not Henry, but Vecna rejects her sympathy as not only he acknowledges Brenner’s brutal treatment over him, but he knows that Brenner was no monster, but a man, an "ordinary, mediocre man” who sought greatness in both him and Eleven. He told Eleven on his years of survival on the Upside Down, and reveals that he is the true Mind Flayer, as the entity was merely a vessel and the rest of the creatures were under his control. Not long after that, he then proceeded to kill Max, just to spite Eleven for banishing him to the Upside Down.

The Mind Flayer particles enter the Demodogs, awakening them and starting a full massacre in the prison, killing all the soldiers in the process. When Hopper, Joyce and Murray went back to the prison in order to defeat part of the Mind Flayer's hive mind, Murray burns all the Demodogs with the Mind Flayer's pieces within them, causing too much damage to the hive mind and consequently, weakening and hurting Vecna, saving Steve, Nancy and Robin from the vines on the Upside Down's Creel house and defeating the Demobats that were killing Eddie. Before his defeat, Vecna threatened Eleven that this is only the beginning of the end and that they have lost, which Eleven corrected him as he is the one who lost. Therefore Steve and Robin burned him with flaming Molotov bottles, and Nancy shot him a bunch of times before shooting him one last time, therefore falling from the Creel House to the ground. Vecna manages to escape in the distraction and activates the fourth gate.

Assimilation of Hawkins[]

Vecna beginning his invasion

The Upside-Down begins assimilating into Hawkins.

Despite being incapacitated, Vecna recovers from his burn wounds, refusing to stop until he has destroyed all intelligent life and fulfilled his dark vision, and his plan comes to fruition in the end as Max is presumed dead, and the gates to the Upside Down expand, thus causing many people to be injured and a few get killed, including Jason. Will later explains to Mike that though Vecna had sustained severe wounds, he was still alive and remained dead-set on rebuilding the world according to his will. This is soon proven to be true since the gates allow for the Black Particles and a supernatural storm to emerge from the portal, therefore the entire realm is slowly invading Earth, starting with Hawkins.
