Villain Overview

I'm applying for a new villain loan. Go by the name of "Vector". It's a mathematical term. A quantity represented by an arrow with both direction and magnitude! Vector! That's me! Cause I'm committing crimes with both direction and magnitude! OH YEAH!
~ Vector’s most famous quote, introducing himself to Felonious Gru.

Personality[]

Despite being a genius in mechanics, strategy, and inventing, Vector is socially awkward and mischievous. He is arrogant and boastful, and often takes time to congratulate himself and revel in his achievements. Vector can be quite deceitful as well, as he "procrastinates" on safely returning Margo, Edith, and Agnes when Gru simply surrenders the moon as promised.

Vector gets along well with his father, as both are seen having fun in a picture together when Vector was a younger kid. Even when he is older, he still maintains a good status with him, as his father boasts about his talents but is super harsh on him for losing the shrink ray to Gru. Also even though he is an adult, Vector embraces a pure youthful nature.

Initially, he was friendly to Gru, despite being a villain. However, he developed a valid grudge against him for freezing his head and stopped at nothing to spite his newfound rival. To that end, he stole the shrink ray from Gru and used it on his ship, put him through an ordeal with his traps when he tried to steal it back, and later kidnapped the girls Gru eventually came to love as his own to get the moon, and even scammed Gru by revealing he had no intent on releasing them after he kept his part of the bargain.

He can also be sadistic, laughing and cheering at his evil deeds or when he has outsmarted anybody he opposes.

Despite his claim to have become the number one villain for a short while, he is ultimately a coward. When Gru gets past his missiles and shark to save the girls, Vector panics and uses the escape pod to get away. He has no guts to fight back and tries to stay alive pathetically.

Appearance[]

Vector is always shown wearing an orange and white tracksuit, which can convert into a flight suit, enabling the owner to fly, and a fully functional spacesuit, along with various other modes. Agnes mistook his apparel for pajamas, much to Vector's annoyance.

He has brown hair styled into a bowl cut, brown eyes, and a sharp nose. He also wears large black glasses. He has gained a somewhat potbelly that wasn't part of his tracksuit, causing it to stick out.

While unconfirmed, it is possible that Vector looks younger than he really is, given how he was likely 5 or 6 years old in 1976. Yet, he looks like he's in his late 30s or his early 40s in 2016.

Biography[]

Despicable Me[]

Oh ho ho. I'm really scared.
~ Vector

When Felonious Gru first encounters Vector at the Bank of Evil, he does not seem like the type of guy who would be competent enough to steal an ice cream cone, let alone the Great Pyramid of Giza, as his boasts only irritate, and his latest invention, the Piranha Gun, falls flat. Even when the bank manager, Mr. Perkins, confirms it, Gru only reacts with disbelief and plans to steal the moon to mend his broken pride. However, with the right tools, though, Vector proves to be a significant threat to his own plans to steal the moon.

When Gru first steals a Shrink Ray from an East Asian facility, Vector steals it from him in turn. Vector evades all his efforts to shoot him down and, to add insult to injury, uses the Shrink Ray to shrink Gru's aircraft, leaving him and his two Minions to putter home in defeat.

When Gru tries to infiltrate his fortress, Vector defeats him several times over, all with the push of a button with his keyboard. However, when he lets Margo, Edith, and Agnes order cookies from them, he unwittingly inspires Gru to reluctantly adopt the girls and use them to get the shrink ray back. When they deliver Vector's cookies, Dr. Nefario's cookie robots emerge and shut down his security before giving Gru and two minions access. However, the bots accidentally seal the entrance, and the three nearly fail while dodging Vector's senses.

Later, after learning from Mr. Perkins (revealed to be his father) that the Shrink Ray is currently in Gru's custody & left to be stolen also, the three girls were Gru's tools to distract Vector so that Gru can successfully steal it back. Vector plans to get the moon for himself & his father so they can both succeed in this moon heist against Gru, thus making them both receive everything they want & dominate the world, which is much better for them than they are both wealthy. When his father sends him to get to the moon, he first tries to hitch a ride on Gru's rocket with his Squid Launcher as interference, only to be thrown off when Gru electrifies its exterior before proceeding to successfully shrink the moon. Vector manages to save himself turning his jumpsuit into flight mode but banged into an electric tower and got electrocuted again.

Still determined to spite his rival, Vector infiltrates the girls' dance recital and abducts them, intending to ransom them for the moon. When Gru discovers the note from Vector, he heads over to Vector's fortress and turns over the moon as promised. However, Vector scams Gru, declaring he will hold on to the girls for only "a little longer" (which is obviously not true), and instead attempts to kill him with missiles as he flees in his escape pod with both the moon and the girls after Gru knocks out his pet shark and makes short work of his security. He manages to keep the girls hostage & deliver the moon to his father to impress him, so they both have victory in the moon heist. Gru launches a rescue with the help of Nefario and the Minions in their aircraft (which has grown back to its original size).

Nefario reveals that the Shrink Ray's effects are temporary and that the object will return to its original size based on its mass, meaning they have little time left. Vector soon loses control of the ship due to the heavy mass while Gru and his Minions manage to rescue the girls.

As the moon rolls around and also kept on rolling into and onto him harmfully, it hits the button for a backup propulsion system, launching the ship into space before it explodes, leaving Vector stranded on the surface as the moon returns to its normal size and orbits back to space; shortly afterward, he activates an oxygen bubble.

Despite being horrified to learn that he is now stuck on the moon's surface for who knows how long, thus makes Vector defeated by being banished outside the world & thus also keeping him away from Gru and the girls from now on ever again like he is able to find Gru by hitching a ride onto his rocket ship to space and hunt for the girls by abducting them after infiltrating their dance recital.

Vector (with an elastic space helmet) is last seen dancing to "You Should Be Dancin'," only to be joined by a Minion who floated away from the Earth after drinking some antigravity serum earlier.

Minions: The Rise of Gru[]

Mr. Perkins: Ha ha ha! Kids. Actually, I have a son of my own.
Gru: (groans) He looks weird.
~ Mr. Perkins to Gru and Wild Knuckles about kids.

He does not physically appear in the film; only a picture of him at his younger age (the same one seen in the first Despicable Me film) is shown when Gru and Wild Knuckles pose as a grandfather-grandson duo to fool Mr. Perkins to succeed their heist into stealing something from his bank. Seeing his photo of Vector, Gru comments how weird he looks because of his appearance but Wild Knuckles comments that he's cute.

Mooned[]

Okay. Yeah. It's, um, cool. This is a--- This is totally what I planned! HA!
~ Vector in Mooned.

Taking place shortly after the first Despicable Me movie, Vector proceeds to panic after his defeat, thinking he is going to die on the Moon. However, he soon realizes he can escape by jumping high (due to the lack of gravity in space). It seems to be working at first until he notices the same Minion who drank the antigravity serum in his path. Vector tries to get him to move out of the way, but the Minion does not listen as the two collide, causing him and the Minion to return back to the Moon.

Vector asks the Minion if he knows any way to return to Earth to which the Minion tries to say something that Vector does not understand. Annoyed, he tries to get the Minion to leave him alone by playing "fetch" with the Minion using a rock. After the Minion leaves, Vector scans the area with his suit, noticing a space satellite that he could use; when Vector approaches it, however, the satellite breaks, causing his foot to be crushed. After this failed attempt Vector scrolls through his suit settings, noticing his bubble suit option. Vector, after realizing he can use the suit to float back to Earth and activates it just as the Minion returns with the rock he threw earlier, Vector expresses his pleasure in leaving the Minion behind. Unfortunately, his suit blows up too much, leading to it bursting and Vector repeatedly crashing into a nearby large rock, much to the Minion's amusement.

After this failure, Vector decides it is time for him to use the 'serious stuff', which is his 'Limb Stretch 2.0'; Vector proceeds to wrap his now extended limbs around two nearby rocks like a slingshot, he then insults the Moon just as he launches himself. Yet again, this backfires, and Vector ends up going too fast, passing the Minion, who is talking to his friends on the phone while sipping a drink. As he is about to crash into a giant rock, Vector grapples his extended limbs around two rocks in an attempt to slow himself down, to which he is successful, although the rock he grappled onto is pulled back with him, crushing him and leading to the rock he was about to crash into falling on top of him.

Vector then attempts to escape by driving a Moon buggy he found on a ramp-like structure; however, before he can do this, he notices a rock in his path, leaving him to question who designed the Moon so poorly. He attempts to get rid of the rock with a pickaxe and a drill but it doesn't work, leading the vibration to make the buggy move forwards slightly. Vector then shoots the rock with a laser gun, which successfully destroys the rock, although it also leads the buggy to drive down the ramp, repeatedly crushing Vector in the process.

An injured Vector then struggles towards the same satellite he tried to use earlier in defeat, suddenly, he realizes he can use rockets from his suit and attach them to the satellite to make his own ship. Suddenly, the Minion approaches Vector, trying to inform him that some other Minions are on the way with Gru's airship to rescue them. Vector does not understand, however, and thinks the Minion is asking to ride with Vector on his ship back to Earth. The Minion tries to clarify that this is not what he meant, but Vector does not listen; at that moment, the other Minions arrive with Gru's airship. They try to call Vector, but he does not hear them, being too focused on building his own rocket. The Minion then scoffs at Vector to the other Minions and then gets aboard the airship and they fly off. Similarly, Vector finishes his ship and proceeds to press a button, activating the rocket. It seems to be working at first, but Vector soon notices the airship in his path, leading to a collision.

Vector soon awakes from the collision realizing that he is not on Earth, but on Mars, even further away from Earth than he was before. A green Martian then appears and says something to Vector, which Vector could not understand. Vector then harshfully tells the Martian to go away, the Martian then approaches the Minions (who also survived the crash) and befriends them.

He then offers them a ride back to Earth which the Minions accept, they all say goodbye to Vector much to his unfortunate shock, realizing that they were trying to help him all along while he was too distracted attempting to get to Earth himself. Because it's too late for him now since they then fly off to Earth without him, leaving Vector on Mars.

Despicable Me 4[]

Uh huh, OH YEAH!!
~ Vector in Despicable Me 4.

Somehow, Vector returned to Earth, but was imprisoned in the Anti-Villain League's maximum security prison, along with his father. He was present during Gru and Maxime Le Mal's concert, singing "Everybody Wants to Rule the World", while he danced happily with El Macho, his dad, and Balthazar Bratt (especially with the other past villains, like the Vicious 6, the Villain Con Villains, Scarlet Overkill, and her husband, Herb Overkill).

Trivia[]

  • Vector marks Jason Segel's first villainous role.
  • Vector's cameo in Minions: The Rise of Gru has led some fans to debate what his true age really is, as the photo of him seen in the film is the same one seen in Despicable Me. At best, Vector was around five or six years old in the photo when Gru at that time was ten years old, but the second Minions film takes place in 1976 whereas Despicable Me takes place in 2010, though Vector looks like someone in his late twenties or in his early thirties in that film. More confusing is the fact that Mr. Perkins implied in the first film that Vector's youth was one of the reasons he favored him over older villains than Gru, further suggesting the age gap between Gru and Vector is far more than four or five years.
  • Even though for his (young) adult age, Vector purely has a youthful nature. This also explains that it was mistakenly for a bit of him being known for a juvenile.
  • Vector is shown to be a dark reflection of Gru: Both were self-established villains who are willing to achieve their goals of becoming the greatest supervillains in the world. However, while Gru can be civil with the Minions and treats them like equals, and despite his initial hatred towards children, since he originally viewed Margo, Agnes, and Edith as pawns, he eventually grew to care for the trio throughout the movie, influencing him to become more heroic than he was before. Vector, meanwhile, is shown to be more determined in getting into villainy, which was further aided by the fact that he was horribly cruel towards the aforementioned girls, as evidenced in the film's climax, where he had carelessly put them in danger. Vector is an example of what Gru would've become if he had let his descent into villainy consume him.
  • His defeat is different in the video game as he uses the shrink ray to get the moon instead of Gru, but he uses a machine on his rocket to enlarge the moon to its original size and have Vector stranded on it.
  • It's unknown how he came back to Earth in Despicable Me 4. However, it's possible that he built a makeshift rocket on Mars, or either the AVL or the Bank of Evil used a spaceship to retrieve him.
